The leaves resemble those of small apricot trees, but are thinner and a paler green. The fruits ripen in the eighth and ninth lunar months, initially green and turning black later, dividing into three sections. Oil is extracted from the seeds, which can be used for lamp fuel and dyeing hair.
It is also suitable for individuals with Qi deficiency; it should be slowly roasted and taken in small doses. Although this substance astringes the intestines, it also drains Qi, due to its bitter and astringent taste.
Both Toona sinensis (Zheng Chun) flowers and Cedrela sinensis (Chou Chu) have an odor, but one produces flowers and fruit while the other does not. In common usage, the tree that bears no flowers or fruit, has a large trunk, and a straight main stem is called Zheng Chun (Toona). The leaves and twigs of Zheng Chun are used. The tree that bears flowers and pods, has a smaller trunk, and a crooked, short main stem is called Chou Chu (Cedrela). The roots, leaves, and pods of Chou Chu are used. Therefore, it is said that no pods are seen on Zheng Chun, only on Chou Chu. There is also an insect known as "Chou Ji" (Cedrela bug), so it is understood why the ancients named it "Chou Ji" rather than "Zheng Ji," clearly indicating that the presence of the bug identifies the tree as Chou Chu, and its absence as Zheng Chun. This distinction is very clear. Those using Zheng Chun leaves and Chou Chu roots, leaves, and pods should investigate according to this principle.
A woman in Luoyang, aged forty-six or forty-seven, drank excessively and consumed large amounts of fish and crab, disregarding health regimens. Later, due to overindulgence in food and drink, toxins accumulated in her zang-fu organs, causing thirty or more bowel movements daily, with stool mixed with pus and blood. The pain in the large intestine extending to the anus was unbearable. Physicians' attempts to stop bloody dysentery were ineffective, and treatments for wind-intestinal conditions exacerbated the symptoms. Generally, wind-intestinal conditions present with blood but no pus. Such a condition had persisted for over half a year, leading to gradual weakening of Qi and Blood, reduced appetite, and emaciation. Slightly warm herbs intensified abdominal pain and bleeding; slightly cool herbs caused immediate diarrhea, further depleted Qi, and reduced porridge intake; neutral-warm herbs had no effect on the disease. Approaching old age, physicians declared their methods exhausted, leaving her to await death. Someone advised taking Renshen San (Ginseng Powder). The patient's family hesitated but administered it casually. After one dose, she felt improvement; after two doses, symptoms decreased; after three doses, pus and blood stopped. Within ten doses, the illness was cured. When asked about the prescription, it was explained: It treats Large Intestine Wind-Deficiency, dysentery with pus and blood and pain caused by excessive alcohol consumption and internal heat, persisting for many days without recovery. The formula consists of 1 liang of Cortex Meliae (Quch Gen Bai Pi) and 1 liang of Radix Ginseng (Renshen), ground into powder. Each time, take 2 qian bi, taken on an empty stomach with warm wine. If wine is not consumed, warm rice gruel may be used instead. Avoid greasy foods, wet dough, green vegetables, fruits, sweets, chicken, pork, and fishy odors.
