There are two types of *Lufengfang* (Exposure Honeycomb): one is small and pale yellow, with a nest six to seven cun or up to one chi long, two to three cun wide, hanging down like a honeycomb slab; the comb side is mostly found in dense, shaded bushes, known in the world as "Ox-tongue Wasp" (*Niushé Feng*). The other type is either on high trees or under eaves, with a hard exterior, volume about three to four dou, or one to two dou for smaller ones, containing an internal nest shaped like a gourd, hence the name. The wasps are reddish-yellow and larger than other wasps, known in the world as "Black Gourd Wasp" (*Xuanhu Feng*). *Shu Ben Tu Jing* states that it should be harvested in the eleventh and twelfth lunar months, which avoids their breeding period. Currently, people use both types for *Lufengfang*.
They are particularly abundant in the areas of Dongjing and Xijing. Their shape resembles silkworm moths, but with slightly black heads and legs. They have double wings: the outer layer is gray, the inner layer deep red, possessing all five colors, and a large abdomen; this is the *Chuji* (Stinkbug Moth). Nowadays, people also use it to promote blood circulation and treat amenorrhea.
Those with larger bodies and louder calls in summer are cicadas. Their call remains consistent throughout their life cycle. They emerge from the soil only at dusk or night, climbing to high places where their back shells split open for the adult cicada to emerge. They emerge at night for two reasons: first, to avoid humans; second, to avoid sun exposure, which would dry out their shells and prevent molting. When it becomes cold, they fall to the ground. Children collect and keep them; even without food for several days, they do not need to eat. The ancients believed they feed on wind and dew, which is true. This is evident because they urinate without defecating. In Western Sichuan, there is "Cicada Flower," which occurs when a cicada fails to emerge from its shell and transforms into a flower growing from its neck. Additionally, cicada sloughs (*Chanqiao*) treat blurred vision and corneal opacities. Furthermore, decocting cicada sloughs in water and administering the juice effectively treats infants with delayed eruption of pustular rashes.
Silkworms undergo two or three generations. Only the first generation's stiff silkworms (*Jiangcan*) are best, being large and free of maggots. To treat infantile convulsions (*Jingfeng*), equal parts of white stiff silkworms (*Bai Jiangcan*) and scorpion tails (*Xieshao*), along with one qian of the tips of *Tianxiong* (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root) and *Fuzi* (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root prepared), are lightly roasted and ground into fine powder. Each dose is one zi or half a qian, mixed with warm water and fresh ginger juice, and administered by force-feeding. The silkworm moths used are from the second generation, as they are prolific in reproduction.
There are three sizes of biting flies (*Meng*). *Feimeng* (Biting Fly) is commonly used today; it is as large as a bee, with a concave, flat abdomen, and a slight yellow-green color. Male specimens are abundant along the ponds and rivers of Bazhou and Shunan Jun. Since they feed only on the blood of cattle and horses, they are used to treat blood stasis and blood obstruction.
