(Yinyanghuo, also known as Xianlingspi) It grows in Jiangdong, Shaanxi, Hanzhong, and Huxiang regions. It is produced in deep mountains. From one root, several stems emerge. The stems are as thick as threads. They are one to two chi tall. Each stem has two branches. Each branch bears three leaves. The leaves are two to three cun long. Their shape resembles apricot leaves and soybean leaves. The leaf surface is smooth, and the back is pale. They are very thin and fine. The margins have tiny spines. The odor is sweet, fragrant, pungent, and warm. Pungency moistens the Kidney (Shen). Sweetness and warmth benefit Yang Qi (Yang Qi). The medicinal action can ascend and descend; it belongs to the Yang category. It is suitable for those with deficiency of True Yang (Zhen Yang). It enters the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian (Shou Jueyin Xinbao Jing). It is an essential herb for tonifying the Mingmen Gate (Mingmen) and the Sanjiao Triple Energizer (Sanjiao). It also enters the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (Zu Shaoyin Shen Jing) and the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian (Zu Jueyin Gan Jing). It mainly treats impotence (Yin Wei), severe injuries, pain in the penis, promotes urination, benefits Qi and strength, and strengthens willpower. (From *Ben Jing*) For men suffering from absolute Yang deficiency and infertility, and women suffering from absolute Yin deficiency and infertility; for the elderly who are confused and senile; for middle-aged people who are forgetful; for all types of cold wind and labor qi disorders; for muscle and tendon spasms and stiffness; for numbness of the four limbs; for tonifying the waist and knees; for strengthening heart power. When added to Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), it treats impotence caused by Qi deficiency. Generally speaking, after human birth, all True Yang relies on postnatal Qi (Houtian Zhi Qi). When using tonifying formulas, adding this herb guides Qi back to its origin to enrich Yang, allowing it to ascend together. Thus, True Yang becomes fully unobstructed. Used together with Baijili (Tribulus Fruit), Gouqizi (Lycium Fruit), Rongshao (Cistanche Stem), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), and Shanyuzhu (Cornus Fruit), it forms a superb formula for tonifying Yang.
[Discussion] Yinyanghuo enters the Mingmen to tonify True Yang. The True Yang of the Kidney and Mingmen is precisely the Yuan Qi (Original Qi) of the human body. In cases of absolute Yang or absolute Yin diseases, if one does not address the Yuan Qi, how can one revive what is already withered? As for pain in the penis and difficult urination, these are caused by deficiency of Qi in the Liver and Kidney. If one can enter the Kidney and assist Yuan Yang, this is equivalent to tonifying Kidney Qi. Since the Liver and Kidney are inherently treated together, this logic holds. Its taste is sweet and fragrant, with a slight pungency and warmth. Sweetness returns to the Earth element (Spleen/Stomach), acting as a pivot for Water and Fire Qi. This herb, precisely because of its sweet fragrance, achieves its effect in cases of absolute Yang and Yin deficiency. It is not entirely similar to other Yang-tonifying substances. For those with insufficient True Yang, it allows Heavenly Qi to reach the Earth to nourish the withered. For those with sufficient True Yang, it allows Earthly Qi to reach Heaven to freely exert its function. For example, the confusion and senility of the elderly, and the forgetfulness of the middle-aged, are due to the decline of Yuan Qi failing to ascend. Considering this, its efficacy is clear. One must understand that this herb uses descending to achieve ascending; its ascent is due to its ability to descend.
Mr. Miao stated: Those with easy erection of deficient Yang, strong Yang that does not flaccid, continuous nocturnal emissions, red urine, and dry mouth should all avoid it.
[Processing] Use clippers to remove the floral branches from the edges of the leaves. For every jin (500g) of the herb, mix and stir-fry with four liang (approx. 125g) of sheep fat until the fat is completely absorbed. Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome) and Zizhi (Ganoderma) serve as its guiding/adjuvant herbs. Processing with wine is beneficial. (According to this, only the leaves are used. One must obtain both stems and leaves, exactly as described by Benhu [Li Shizhen], to be authentic.)
