Bai Shiying (White Quartz) is produced in the valleys of Huayin and Mount Tai. It is also found in Guozhou and Luozhou. Among these, the variety from Zezhou is considered superior. It is as large as a finger, with six sharp edges resembling cut facets. Its color is pure white, translucent, and lustrous; those measuring five to six cun in length are particularly excellent.
It tastes sweet and pungent, and its nature is slightly warm. It acts on the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. It primarily treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome), Yin Wei Bu Zu (Impotence and Kidney Deficiency), and long-standing cold in the chest and diaphragm. It tonifies Qi, expels Wind-Damp Bi syndrome, supplements the Five Zang Organs, directs rebellious Qi downward, treats Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy) and Fei Yong (Lung Abscess) with expectoration of pus, relieves cough and rebellious Qi, strengthens the Large Intestine, and treats wheezing, cough, and hemoptysis. (From *Zhu Ben Cao*) "Moistening can remove dryness"; examples include Zi Shiying (Purple Quartz) and Bai Shiying. (From *Cang Qi*)
The color of Bai Shiying is bright and lustrous like flower sepals. Its substance enters the Kidney, and its color enters the Lung. The Fire Qi contained within it can dispel Cold. Therefore, it treats conditions such as Xiao Ke caused by Kidney Qi failing to circulate through the chest; Yin Wei Bu Zu due to exhaustion of Tian Gui (Heavenly Water); cough and rebellious Qi due to the Lung's inability to descend smoothly; Bi obstruction and discomfort due to Qi losing its command; and long-standing cold in the chest and diaphragm due to Fire losing its nurturing aspect. (From Su Zhe/Zi You)
For Wind-Deficiency Cold Bi, deafness due to Kidney Deficiency, it benefits Essence, preserves Spirit, and treats various forms of Yang Deficiency. Usage: Take three liang of Bai Shiying, heat it until red-hot, quench it in wine three times, seal it tightly in a bottle to prevent leakage of Qi. Warm and take one zhong (cup) each morning, pressing it down with a small amount of rice. Another method involves using Ci Shi (Magnetite).
[Discussion] *Ben Jing*, *Bie Lu*, and Zhen Quan often categorized Bai Shiying under Metal based on its color, thus using it to treat Lung diseases. However, in the Five Elements, Metal is the mother of Water. In the human body, Metal and Water act as mutual mothers and children. Observing the pathway from the two Yin orifices to the Lung, and from the Kidney meridian via the Lung to the Heart, ensuring that Fire does not over-control Metal, and that Metal serves as the spouse of Fire to distribute Qi transformation. Thus, the Lung performs its function of governing Qi to benefit the other four Zang Organs, which relies even more heavily on Water. All stones belong to "Yang within Yin." The mechanism by which this stone benefits the Lung via the Kidney aligns with the principle of mutual motherhood, fitting the concept of "Yang within Yin." *Bie Lu* states that for treating Fei Wei, only deficiency patterns are suitable; if caused by Heat, it should not be given indiscriminately. As for Fei Yong with pus expectoration and cough/rebellious Qi, it is indeed an appropriate indication. Su Song stated that *Ru Shi Lun* refers to Zhong Ru (Stalactite) as "Ru" and Bai Shiying as "Shi," indicating that among the six types of Ying stones, White Stone is the most precious. He further said that "Ru" is Yin within Yang, and "Shi" is Yang within Yin. Therefore, after the Jiazi day in the eleventh month when Yang generates, one takes Ru; after the Jiazi day in the fifth month when Yin generates, one takes Shi. However, they have contrary and antagonistic properties, and their adverse reactions cause significant harm. Although there are many prescriptions for Ru Shi, few are effective. Indeed, they should not be taken lightly. Mineral and metal drugs are harsh; they bear the burden of disease when illness is present, but once the disease is gone, they damage Yin Qi. Caution is essential.
[Processing] Use after heating in a crucible and quenching in wine three times. Process according to proper methods. Stop taking upon cure; do not overdose.
