*Papaver somniferum*, also known as *Yumi* (Imperial Rice). Sown in autumn, it grows through winter. The leaves resemble those of white beans. In the third and fourth lunar months, flower stalks emerge and form buds. When the flowers bloom, the buds fall off. The flowers are shaped like upward-facing cups, typically having four petals.
The capsule (fruit) is located within the flower, measuring about one to two cun in length. The stamens and pistils are enclosed within it. It has a lid on top and a calyx at the bottom, resembling a wine jar. Inside are white grains, extremely fine, which can be cooked into porridge.
Mixing the capsule with food for consumption. (Hence the name *Yumi*). Its shell is used medicinally in many ways, but it is not recorded in the *Bencao* (Materia Medica), indicating that ancient people did not use it. Modern gardeners cultivate *Papaver somniferum* seeds, usually sowing them at midnight during the Mid-Autumn Festival. After the seedlings emerge from the soil, they grow within a few days; thus, the statement "sown in autumn, growing in winter" is not entirely accurate. Perhaps this is due to differences in local soil conditions, causing variations in growth timing.
*Yumi* (referring to the seeds): Flavor is sweet and neutral; nature is cold. It primarily promotes the circulation of wind-qi, expels pathogenic heat, and treats regurgitation/phlegm stagnation in the chest. (Cited from Su Song). Excessive consumption facilitates bowel movements and urination.
Papaver Shell: Flavor is sour and astringent; nature is slightly cold. It consolidates the Lung and astringes the Intestines. It stops diarrhea and dysentery. (For those who take it long-term without abdominal pathology, it can treat rectal prolapse, seminal emission, and chronic cough).
Treatment for cough: Use Papaver Shell, decocted with food, taken with plain warm water before sleep.
[Discussion] *Papaver somniferum* is sown in autumn and sprouts in winter, transitioning from Metal energy to Water energy for growth. It inherits the Qi of consolidation to secure loss/depletion, thus entering the Kidney channel to treat bone diseases. Regarding cough and dysentery, formulas such as Xiongqiong Ruxiang Zhanluo San (where Papaver Shell is the sovereign herb) are examples. Can the application of Papaver Shell not be extended by analogy to treat cephalalgia/head wind?
In cases of diarrhea, dysentery, or seminal emission, if damp-heat pathogens are abundant, mistaken use of Papaver Shell may result in unbearable abdominal pain, pain attacking the joints of hands and feet causing swelling and immobility, or general malaise. How can one not be cautious?
[Processing] Wash with water until moistened. Remove the pedicel and fibrous membranes. Take the outer thin skin. Dry in the shade, cut finely. Stir-fry with rice vinegar before use. Some methods involve honey-frying or honey-roasting.
Opium (*Afuyou*): Traditionally believed to be the juice/sap of the *Papaver somniferum* flower. Its flavor and nature are the same as Papaver Shell. Its efficacy in stopping dysentery surpasses that of the shell. However, frequent use is contraindicated; long-term use becomes ineffective. Moreover, it consumes Yin fluids. Although it temporarily boosts spirit, it shortens lifespan. It should be strictly prohibited.
For pediatric smallpox, if persistent diarrhea occurs during the pustule formation stage, using 5 li to 1 fen of Opium results in cure without exception. Other medicines cannot match this effect.
Contraindicated with vinegar. Causes intestinal rupture/severe distress.
