Leek, also known as "Grass Stalactite" (Caozhongru), is a yang-strengthening herb. It can be propagated by root division or by seed. It can be harvested three to four times a year. It flowers in clusters in the eighth lunar month and produces fruit in the ninth lunar month. Its taste is pungent and astringent when raw, becoming sweet and sour when cooked. Its nature is warm. It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It mainly treats stubborn cold accumulation and masses in the heart and abdomen. Taking the juice of fresh leeks crushed and extracted can treat Chest Bi (chest obstruction with stabbing pain), where the pain feels like being pierced by an awl, and it helps expel foul blood from the chest, which is highly effective. It treats hematemesis, spitting blood, epistaxis, and hematuria. It treats retrograde menstruation in women, traumatic injuries, and dysphagia (Ge Yi disease). Cooking and eating it warms the middle jiao and directs qi downward, benefits the Kidney, and strengthens Yang. Fumigating with leeks treats postpartum syncope due to blood collapse; washing with leek water treats hemorrhoids and rectal prolapse. Leek leaves are hot in nature, while the roots are warm. Raw leeks are pungent and disperse blood; cooked leeks are sweet and tonify the middle jiao. It is a vegetable of the Foot Jueyin Liver. The *Suwen* states that Heart diseases benefit from eating leeks. The *Shijian Bencao* states that leeks enter the Kidney, as Kidney and Liver are mother-son organs. (Li Shizhen) Clarified leek juice mixed with child's urine can dissipate blood stasis in the epigastrium, which is very effective. For phlegm with blood streaks coughed up, mixing raw leek juice and child's urine, adding *Curcuma aromatica* (Yujin, 郁金) powder and taking it internally will clear the blood. Pouring it into newborns helps them vomit foul water and blood, preventing various diseases later in life. A poor old man suffered from dysphagia with stabbing chest pain. Someone advised him to sip leek juice mixed with a little salt and plum brine slowly, gradually increasing the dose. He suddenly vomited several sheng of thick saliva and was cured. For regurgitation, take two cups of leek juice, add one cup each of ginger juice and cow milk, and take it warm slowly. This is because leek juice dissolves blood stasis, ginger juice resolves phlegm, and cow milk moistens dryness, tonifies deficiency, and clears heat. One person drank three cups of "Guaduo Wine" in the twelfth lunar month. Since then, food had to pass through the diaphragm with difficulty, feeling hard, astringent, and slightly painful. The right pulse was very choppy, and the Guan position pulse was deep. This indicates foul blood stagnating at the entrance of the stomach, with Qi constrained transforming into phlegm, blocking the esophagus. Take half a cup of leek juice and sip it slowly. For cases where dead blood remains at the stomach opening, add leek juice and *Platycodon grandiflorus* (Jiegeng, 桔梗) to the prescription to lift and open Qi and Blood. (Zhu Danxi) For upward reversal of Kidney Qi, use *Wuling San* (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) made into pills, taken on an empty stomach with Anise (*Foeniculum vulgare*, Huixiang, 茴香) decoction, because leek nature can also dissipate blood stasis at the stomach opening. For Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst) with excessive thirst, stir-fry leek shoots or make them into soup, without adding salt; adding sauce is acceptable. Eat up to ten jin (5 kg) and then stop; this is extremely effective. Do not eat after the Qingming Festival, as it causes Qi depletion. For painful hemorrhoids, cut one jin (500 g) of leeks, mix with butter, stir-fry until cooked, wrap in cotton cloth to make two packs, and apply alternately with heat until the warmth penetrates. For washing, place the medicinal liquid in a basin, cover with a vessel leaving one hole, sit over the hole while hot, fumigate first then wash. After several times, the hemorrhoids will naturally fall off.
[Discussion] Leek is pungent and belongs to Yang. The Liver likes pungency because pungency interacts with Metal Qi to ascend and receive Yang, thereby reaching Yin. Leek is sour and belongs to Yin. The Lung likes sourness... (Text here has lacunae/scribal errors, inferred: Sourness returns to the Kidney). Leek is pungent and sweet, warm in nature, belonging to Yang. It can enter the Jueyin Meridian, tonify the deficiency of the Lower Jiao Liver and Mingmen (Gate of Vitality). It treats nocturnal emission, hematuria, frequent urination, enuresis, leukorrhea, and vaginal discharge in women. *San Yin Fang* treats deficiency-cold of the Lower Yuan, involuntary urination, or turbid urine, using Home-made Leek Seed Pills. For impotence, continuous seminal emission, sensation of needle-like pricking, and pain upon pressure, named Qiang Zhong (Strong Middle), which is a Kidney stagnation and leakage disorder. Use equal parts of Leek Seeds (*Allium tuberosum* seeds, Jiu Zi, 韭子) and Prepared Teasel Root (*Dipsaci Radix*, Gubuzhi, 破故纸), each one liang (30 g), powdered. Take three qian (9 g) per dose, decocted in one sheng (200 ml) of water, taken three times daily. Note: Leek seeds treat Qiang Zhong, which is caused by deficiency of Lower Yuan Original Yang with stagnation leading to leakage. Receiving the transformation of Upper Jiao Pungent-Sweet qualities achieves efficacy. If the disease is due to Yin deficiency, caution is required.
[Discussion] Leek leaves are pungent, with a slight sourness at the end, and absolutely no sweetness when raw. Leek seeds, however, form in late autumn, exclusively inheriting Metal Qi, and have lost their sourness. Lung Qi... (Text here has lacunae/scribal errors, inferred: Lung Qi does not return...). The Middle Du Fu (Middle Vessel), where water passages emerge. The Liver governs urination, but is encompassed within the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). Wei Qi of the Lower Jiao transforms water for excretion, thus constraining the Sanjiao... (Text here has lacunae/scribal errors). Eating too much can confuse the spirit and is most taboo for nourishing life. Those with deficient Stomach Qi and internal heat should not consume it. (Chen Shigong/Zhongchun)
Leek yellow (etiolated leeks), which have not emerged from the soil, have stagnant Qi; consuming them obstructs Qi movement. Leek flowers, when consumed, stir up Wind.
