Wind-cold invasion belongs to the Lung system, manifesting as heavy coughing, nasal congestion, sneezing, and clear nasal discharge. Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis) is caused by heat in the brain, characterized by the absence of sneezing, thick and foul-smelling nasal discharge, and prolonged illness may lead to epistaxis (nosebleed).
[Note] Wind-cold invasion is attributed to the Lung, hence sneezing occurs; Bi Yuan is attributed to the Brain, hence sneezing does not occur. Wind-cold pathogens cause clear discharge, whereas heat pathogens cause turbid discharge. Prolonged Bi Yuan with foul odor indicates deep-seated heat, leading to cerebral and nasal bleeding (nao nu).
Chuanxiong Chatiao San (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Tea-Regulating Powder)
Shensu Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction) treats wind-cold invasion in patients with Qi deficiency. For excess patterns causing headache, Chuanxiong Chatiao San is used. The composition of Chuanxiong Chatiao San includes: Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Baizhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Bohe Herba Menthae Haplocalycis (Herba Menthae Haplocalycis), Gancao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis), Qianghuo Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Cha Ye Folium Camelliae Sinensis (Folium Camelliae Sinensis), Xixin Herba Asari (Herba Asari), Jingjie Fructus Schizonepetae (Fructus Schizonepetae), and Fangfeng Radix Saposhnikoviae (Radix Saposhnikoviae). If phlegm is present, Banxia Rhizoma Ziziphus Spinosae (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatae) can be added to resolve phlegm; if heat is present, Shigao Gypsum Fibrosum (Gypsum Fibrosum) can be added to clear heat.
Cang'er San (Xanthium Powder)
Cang'er San treats Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis), a condition caused by wind-heat invading the brain, presenting with photophobia/eye discomfort, headache, incessant nasal discharge, nasal congestion, and heat in the nostrils. The composition of Cang'er San includes: Cang'erzi Fructus Xanthii (Fructus Xanthii), Xin Yi Flos Magnoliae Biondii (Flos Magnoliae Biondii), Baizhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Bohe Herba Menthae Haplocalycis (Herba Menthae Haplocalycis), and Cong Bai Caulis Allii Fistulosi (Caulis Allii Fistulosi).
Huanglian Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Coptis and Saposhnikovia Universal Rescue Decoction)
For early-stage Bi Yuan, Cang'er San is administered; for chronic cases, Huanglian Fangfeng Tongsheng San is used. If there is pain in the nostrils, Bingpeng San (Ice and Borax Powder) mixed with Zhuyedan Porci Bile (Porcine Bile) should be applied externally. If epistaxis occurs, Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) is indicated.
[Note] Bi Yuan is a disease where wind-heat damages the brain. In the early stage, wind pathogen is predominant, so Cang'er San is used to disperse wind. In chronic stages, heat is deeply郁 (stagnant), so Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Universal Rescue Decoction) plus Huanglian Rhizoma Coptidis (Rhizoma Coptidis) is used to clear heat. Surging heat damaging the nostrils causes sores and pain, suitable for external application of Bingpeng San mixed with porcine bile. Heat accumulating in the brain damages the Ying blood (Nutritive Blood) along its pathway, causing bleeding, suitable for cooling with Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction).
