Regarding Yin Deficiency
I. What is Yin Deficiency?
Old Li believes that so-called "Yin" is not an empty term, but the general name for all body fluids. The Daoist classics state: "Nasal mucus, saliva, essence, fluids, sweat, blood, and body liquids—the seven spiritual substances all belong to Yin." Old Li considers Yin to be the moisture within various human tissues. "Deficiency" means insufficiency. The body's moisture is fixed, accounting for approximately two-thirds of body weight. This moisture is constantly consumed and replenished through diet; this is the normal phenomenon. If consumption exceeds replenishment, accumulating over time, when consumption reaches 10%, all normal physiological functions will be affected, leading to certain changes. From subjective or objective perspectives, phenomena different from the usual will appear. Old Li considers these phenomena to be what is commonly called Yin Deficiency Syndrome. Thus, insufficiency of Lung fluids is Lung Yin Deficiency, insufficiency of Kidney essence is Kidney Yin Deficiency, insufficiency of Heart fluids is Heart Yin Deficiency, insufficiency of Liver fluids is Liver Yin Deficiency, and insufficiency of Spleen fluids is Spleen Yin Deficiency. Commonly referred to Yin Deficiency focuses mainly on the Lung, Spleen, and Kidneys. As for Heart and Liver Yin Deficiency, because they focus on Blood, they are categorized under Blood Deficiency.
II. Causes of Yin Deficiency
Old Li believes there are the following points:
1. Congenital insufficiency: This is the root cause of all deficiency syndromes, especially Yin Deficiency.
2. Chronic illness unhealed (such as febrile diseases where heat persists, or chronic cough, chronic diarrhea, chronic dysentery, chronic malaria, etc.): This is the cause of all Yin Deficiencies.
3. Improper use of sweating and purging methods (such as excessive use of diaphoretics or purgatives): This is also a cause of all Yin Deficiencies, but more frequently causes Heart, Spleen, and Kidney Yin Deficiencies.
4. Imprudent sexual activity: This is the main cause of Kidney Yin Deficiency.
5. Excessive smoking, alcohol, pungent, and spicy foods: This is the main cause of Lung Yin Deficiency, meaning excessive Fire leads to Yin Deficiency.
6. Excessive mental exertion: This is the main cause of Heart Yin Deficiency.
7. Anger and emotional depression unresolved for a long time: This is the main cause of Liver Yin Deficiency.
8. Excessive physical fatigue: This is the main cause of Spleen Yin Deficiency.
Generally speaking, Yin Deficiency caused by wine and sex is the most common. The reason is that few people practice moderation while many indulge. Furthermore, a single thread cannot make a cord. Regardless of excessive mental exertion or physical fatigue, if either does not combine with excessive sexual labor or congenital insufficiency, it will not quickly form a Yin Deficiency syndrome. Even if formed, it is easy to treat because the root has not been damaged.
III. Changes Caused by Yin Deficiency
Summarized, there are approximately the following 20 types:
1. Yin Deficiency generates Heat. This explains body heat, bone-steaming consumptive fever, five-palm heat, and all heat syndromes caused by Yin Deficiency.
2. Yin Deficiency leads to Blood Deficiency. This is because fluids are also major components of blood.
3. Yin Deficiency leads to Blood Dryness. The above two points explain scant menstruation, amenorrhea, and all dryness syndromes due to blood insufficiency caused by Yin Deficiency.
4. Yin Deficiency leads to Water Deficiency.
5. Yin Deficiency leads to Insufficiency of Fluids. The above two points explain fluid insufficiency syndromes such as dry mouth, thirst, dry nose, and dry throat caused by Yin Deficiency.
6. Yin Deficiency leads to Essence Deficiency. This explains symptoms such as scant essence, thin essence, and unstable essence retention caused by Yin Deficiency.
7. Yin Deficiency leads to Exuberant Fire.
8. Yin Deficiency leads to Moving Fire.
9. Yin Deficiency leads to Hyperactive Fire.
10. Yin Deficiency leads to Hyperactive Yang.
11. Yin Deficiency leads to Blazing Ministerial Fire. The above five points explain all fire phenomena caused by Yin Deficiency, such as bitter taste with preference for cold, dry tongue, and dry throat.
12. When Yin Deficiency and Exuberant Fire exist, fluids are scorched into Phlegm.
13. When Yin Deficiency and Moving Fire exist, water floods to become Phlegm. The above two points explain phlegm syndromes caused by Yin Deficiency.
14. When Yin Deficiency and Hyperactive Fire exist, blood is forced out through various orifices. This explains various bleeding syndromes caused by Yin Deficiency.
15. Yin Deficiency leads to Deficient Fire flaming upward.
16. Yin Deficiency leads to Floating Deficient Yang.
17. Yin Deficiency leads to Rebellious Deficient Yang. The above three points explain upper-jiao deficient heat phenomena such as red face, red lips, malar flush, dry cough, and vomiting caused by Yin Deficiency.
18. Yin Deficiency leads to Empty Marrow, with Fire sinking into bones. This explains bone-steaming with cold skin syndrome caused by Yin Deficiency.
19. Yin Deficiency leaves Yang without attachment.
20. Yin Deficiency leads to Sudden Collapse of Yang. The above two points explain collapse syndromes such as sudden vertigo and fainting, absence of phlegm sounds in the throat, and absence of pathogenic heat in the body caused by Yin Deficiency.
IV. Symptoms of Yin Deficiency
(1) Symptoms in Various Parts of the Body Due to Yin Deficiency
Head: Dizziness, headache.
Face: Red face with malar flush.
Eyes: Vertigo and blurred vision, red eyes.
Ears: Tinnitus and deafness (deafness occurs when Yin Deficiency Fire rises).
Nose: Dry nose, nasal congestion, breath coming out like fire, epistaxis.
Mouth: Dry mouth, thirst, hematemesis, hemoptysis, vomiting.
Tongue: Dry tongue, tongue pain, lingual bleeding.
Teeth and Gums: Loose teeth, gingival bleeding.
Throat: Dry and painful throat, loss of voice, ulceration of the throat.
Chest and Abdomen: Chest fullness and rebellious Qi, subjective feeling of internal heat, abdominal fullness (Zhongchun said: Spleen deficiency with middle-fullness, worse at night during quiet periods, indicates Spleen Yin Deficiency).
Lower Back: Pain in the lumbar spine.
Genitalia: Hematuria, stranguria or painful urination, nocturnal emission and seminal leakage in men, irregular menstruation, blood-depletion amenorrhea, and hidden pain during dream intercourse in women.
Anus: Constipation, rectal bleeding, loose stools.
Limbs: Soreness and pain in calves, dry heat in soles, heel pain, heat in palms and soles, dry and brittle nails with dull color.
Hair: Hair loss, hair disorder.
Skin: Night sweats, dry and rough skin.
Bones and Tendons: Bone-steaming night fever, generalized soreness and pain of bones and tendons, or pain as if breaking.
Diet: Loss of taste, hunger.
Respiration: Rebellious Qi, Qi obstruction, asthma, phlegmy cough, dry cough, hemoptysis.
Sleep: Insomnia.
Among these symptoms, without correct standards, one might easily mistake deer for a horse, misidentifying Yang Deficiency, Qi Deficiency, Blood Deficiency, or Deficient Fire syndromes as Yin Deficiency, because different syndromes may have identical symptoms. We must compare specific conditions, disease progression, and accompanying syndromes from various aspects, analyzing carefully to correctly differentiate the syndrome.
(2) Main Symptoms of Yin Deficiency
1. Fever in the afternoon.
2. Heat sensation in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest).
3. Deficient, fine, and rapid pulse.
4. General symptoms are worse at night when quiet or lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening.
5. Subjective sensation of fire, preference for cold foods, but eating cold foods does not resolve the problem.
(3) Accompanying Syndromes of Yin Deficiency
1. Lung Yin Deficiency
(1) Chronic cough unhealed for a long time.
(2) Or expectoration of turbid white frothy sputum, or dry cough without sputum, or scant sputum, or blood-streaked sputum.
(3) Or breath coming out of the nose like fire, or epistaxis.
(4) Or chest fullness and rebellious Qi, inability to lie on one side, rapid breathing, or hoarse voice.
2. Spleen Yin Deficiency
(1) Reduced appetite.
(2) Heaviness and fatigue of the four limbs.
(3) Emaciation of muscles.
