Ren Yin and Ren Shen years (When the year's movement is identical to the ruling Qi of the Heaven, it is called "Tong Tian Fu" / Same Heaven Harmony).
The upper part is governed by Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) as the Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler), the middle movement is Tai Jiao Wood Movement (Excessive Wood), and the lower part is governed by Jueyin Fengmu (Wind-Wood) as the Zai Quan (Earthly Ruler). When the movement generates the Heavenly Qi, it is called Xiao Ni (Minor Rebellion), because Wood generates Fire; therefore, the diseases are also mild.
When the movement coincides with the Earthly Branches of the four Meng months (the first month of each season), it is called Zhi De Fu (Branch Virtue Harmony). In the Ren Yin year, the Wood Movement coincides with the Yin position. Yin belongs to Wood, which is the Meng month of Spring. An Excessive Movement added to the Earthly Qi is called Tong Tian Fu. In the Ren Yin and Ren Shen years, the movement and the ruling Qi of Heaven and Earth are the same, both being Wind-Wood. Its movement is characterized by wind stirring, its transformation by rustling, disorder, opening, and splitting, its alteration by shaking, pulling, destroying, and uprooting, and its disease by tremors, dizziness, hypochondriac distension and pain, and fright. Diseases in these two years are few, and there are no plagues.
Wu Yin and Wu Shen years
The upper part is governed by Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) as the Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler), the middle movement is Tai Zheng Huo Movement (Excessive Fire), and the lower part is governed by Jueyin Fengmu (Wind-Wood) as the Zai Quan (Earthly Ruler). When the movement is identical to the Si Tian Qi, it is called Tian Fu (Heaven Harmony). Its movement is characterized by summer heat, its transformation by warmth, noise, stagnation, and muggy heat. (This is the administration and transformation of the Tai Zheng Fire Movement in Wu years.) Its alteration is characterized by fierce heat and boiling, (the alteration of Tai Zheng Fire.) Its diseases are characterized by upper heat stagnation, hematemesis, hematochezia, and heart pain. (Fire pathologies internally correspond to the Heart.) In Yin and Shen years, Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) should advance to govern the Si Tian, but Yangming Zaojin (Dryness-Metal), as the right interstitial Qi of the previous year's Zai Quan, should ascend to become the left interstitial Qi of the new year's Si Tian, yet it fears the victory of Tian Ying Star (Mars/Fire). Encountering Wu Yin and Wu Shen years, Wu represents the Central Movement, where Yang Fire is excessive, and its Qi arrives before the proper time. Metal desires to ascend, but is suppressed by the Fire Movement, so its ascent does not proceed. When Metal Qi stagnates and cannot ascend, people suffer from Lung diseases. When Metal Qi stagnates and desires to erupt, it must wait for the time of proper positioning to manifest. In the Wu Shen year, if Gang (Yang) and Rou (Yin) fail to maintain their positions, such that the Heavenly Movement loses its timing, a Jin Yi (Metal Plague) will erupt within three years. It may happen quickly in the Geng Xu year or slowly in the Xin Hai year, presenting as epidemic febrile diseases. The medication should be Xie Bai San (White Powder Decoction to Drain the Lungs), decocted and cooled, then taken with dissolved Wu Wen Dan (Five Plagues Pill). When the weather frequently rains but does not descend (Zaojin Dryness-Metal stagnates on the earth), and west winds blow frequently, saline land becomes dry. People suffer from upper heat, wheezing cough, and hematemesis. (Fire is excessive above, injuring Lung Metal.) When Metal stagnation erupts, the Qi of desolation and killing prevails, and people suffer from hypochondriac fullness and sadness. (Metal evil attacks the Liver.) Metal Qi is cold, contracting, and dry, thus causing symptoms such as dry throat, cracked hands and feet, and dry skin.
Jia Yin and Jia Shen years
The upper part is governed by Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) as the Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler), the middle movement is Tai Gong Tu Movement (Excessive Earth), and the lower part is governed by Jueyin Fengmu (Wind-Wood) as the Zai Quan (Earthly Ruler). When Heavenly Qi generates the Movement, Fire below generates Earth, it is called Shun Hua (Smooth Transformation). Its movement is characterized by yin rain, its transformation by softness, moisture, heaviness, and abundant dew, its alteration by shock, drifting, and sudden storms, and its disease by heavy body, edema, epigastric fullness, and fluid retention. In years of Smooth Transformation, the people do not get sick.
Geng Yin and Geng Shen years
The upper part is governed by Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) as the Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler), the middle movement is Tai Shang Metal Movement (Excessive Metal), and the lower part is governed by Jueyin Fengmu (Wind-Wood) as the Zai Quan (Earthly Ruler). This is a Tian Xing (Heaven Punishment) year, where Fire below controls Metal, hence it is called "Bu Xiang De Ze Bing" (Disagreement leads to disease). When the movement coincides with the Earthly Branches of the four Meng months, it is called Zhi De Fu. In the Geng Shen year, Metal Movement coincides with the Shen position. (Shen belongs to Metal, the Meng month of Autumn.) Its movement is characterized by coolness, its transformation by clear mist and dew. This is the normal transformation of the Tai Shang Metal Movement in Geng years. Its virtue is rustling mist and dew, its alteration is desolation and withering, and its disease is pain in the shoulders, back, and chest. (Fire evil in the Lung.)
Bing Yin and Bing Shen years
The upper part is governed by Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) as the Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler), the middle movement is Tai Yu Water Movement (Excessive Water), and the lower part is governed by Jueyin Fengmu (Wind-Wood) as the Zai Quan (Earthly Ruler). When the Movement controls the Heavenly Qi, it is called Bu He (Discord), because Water above controls Fire, so the disease is severe. Its movement is characterized by cold and solemnity, its transformation by congealing, bleakness, and biting cold, its alteration by ice, frost, snow, and hail, and its disease by cold edema. The Bing Yin year involves Gang-Rou Shi Shou (Loss of Gang and Rou balance). In Yin-Shen years, Shaoyin Junhuo (Monarch Fire) should descend into the Earth, and Jueyin Fengmu should advance to govern the Zai Quan. However, Shaoyin Junhuo, as the right interstitial Qi of the previous year's Si Tian, should descend to become the left interstitial Qi of the current year's Zai Quan, yet it fears Di Xuan (Water Star), being blocked by Water victory. Encountering Bing Yin and Bing Shen years, Water Movement is excessive and arrives before the proper time, also suppressing Monarch Fire so it cannot descend. Monarch Fire desires to descend, but is met by Water Movement; it attempts to descend but fails. Thus, red clouds appear briefly, black Qi arises instead, warmth feels like stretching out, but cold often brings snow, and biting cold returns. The sky's clouds are bleak; all these are transformations of Cold Water overcoming Fire. If it remains undescended for a long time, Heat stagnates above. The latent Qi transforms into stagnation; after Cold victory, Heat returns, and Red Wind transforms into plague. People suffer from red face, vexation, headache, dizziness, and many warm-heat diseases. In the Bing Yin year, Gang-Rou Shi Shou occurs, and the Heavenly Movement loses its timing. Within two years, Huo Yi (Fire Plague) will erupt. It may arrive early in the Wu Chen year or late in the Ji Si year. If the Qi is weak, the plague is small; if strong, the plague is large, hence the variation in speed. In the Bing Yin and Bing Shen years, Shaoyin Junhuo should descend to the Zai Quan, but is met by Water Movement, preventing descent. People suffer from Heart diseases, resulting in Huo Yu (Fire Stagnation). When Fire stagnation desires to erupt, it must wait for the time of proper positioning. Therefore, one should resolve, disperse, and elevate it according to its trend. Medications should include Wu Wen Dan (Five Plagues Pill) to resolve and benefit, administered with Zhu Ye Dao Chi San (Bamboo Leaf Decoction to Guide Out Redness) decoction. People suffer from Han Zhong (Cold inside) due to Fire excess outside, external carbuncles due to external heat, and internal diarrhea and fullness due to internal cold. Their diseases include chills and fever, malaria, diarrhea, deafness, blindness, vomiting, upper fu Yu (oppression/discomfort), swelling, color changes. When Heat is excessive and Cold returns, Water and Fire contend, causing various diseases.
First Qi: Earthly Qi migrates, Wind wins and shakes, Cold departs and Great Warmth arrives, grass and trees flourish early. Cold comes but does not kill. (In the First Qi, Junhuo Monarch Fire is in charge, combined with Xianghuo Ministerial Fire, hence Great Warmth.) Warm diseases arise. Symptoms include Qi oppression above, hematemesis, red eyes, cough and asthma, headache, blood flooding, hypochondriac fullness, and skin ulcers. (Junhuo and Xianghuo combine their Qi, causing such diseases.)
Second Qi: Fire is reversely stagnated, white dust rises everywhere, clouds move toward the Rain House, Wind cannot overcome Dampness, rain falls, and people recover. Diseases include heat stagnation above, cough and asthma, vomiting, mid-body ulcers, chest and throat obstruction, headache, fever, confusion, and suppurative sores. (All are diseases transformed by Damp-Heat.)
Third Qi: Heavenly Administration spreads, scorching heat arrives, Shaoyang descends from above, Ministerial Fire holds exclusive command, so scorching heat arrives and rain follows. People suffer from heat in the center, deafness, blindness, hematemesis, suppurative sores, cough, vomiting, rhinorrhea, epistaxis, thirst, sneezing, yawning, throat bi, red eyes, and sudden death. (Host and Guest Fires blaze together, causing such heat diseases.)
Fourth Qi: Coolness finally arrives, Dryness-Metal guest adds upon Wet-Earth host, so cool wind arrives while scorching heat interrupts (intermittent). Transformation occurs. Earth and Metal generate each other, so people are peaceful. Diseases include chest fullness (when Dryness is excessive, the Lung suffers itself), and body edema (when Dampness is excessive, the Spleen suffers itself).
Fifth Qi: Cold-Water guest adds upon Dryness-Metal host, Water is cold and Metal contracts, Summer departs and Cold arrives, rain descends, and Qi Men (pores/openings that vent Ying and Wei Qi, hence called Qi Men) close. Young Wood adjusts early, people avoid Cold Evil, gentlemen are meticulous. Metal is solemn and Water is cold, one should beware and avoid.
Sixth Qi: Jueyin is at the bottom, Wind-Wood is in charge, Host Qi generates it with Cold Water, Earth receives righteous Qi and Wind arrives, things grow again (Earthly Qi should not respond). Fog moves. Diseases include inability to control closure (incontinence or sweating), heart pain, and cough due to Yang Qi not storing. The time should be for storage, but Wind-Wood stirs it. Wind is Yang, hence diseases occur thus.
Mao-You Years (Ding Mao, Ding You, Gui Mao, Gui You, Ji Mao, Yi Mao, Yi You, Xin Mao, Xin You, Ji You)
Yangming Zaojin (Dryness-Metal) governs the Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler), representing the state of Dryness transformation of the year's Qi, which is Heavenly Qi. Shaoyin Junhuo (Monarch Fire) governs the Zai Quan (Earthly Ruler), which is Earthly Qi. Yangming Zaojin corresponds to the Qi image of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, associated with Geng-Xin Metal. Its transformation is based on Dryness. All clarity, dryness, solemnity, and firmness of all things are transformations of Metal, manifesting as cool, crisp, and biting, with rustling mist and dew. When Dryness-Metal overflows above, Wood is controlled by it, so grass grows late in flourishing. In humans, Liver Blood is injured and cannot nourish sinews and bones, leading to internal changes. Moreover, Metal Qi is too cold, capable of altering the generating Qi, hence the response of grass growth is thus. However, with Yangming Zaojin above, Shaoyin Junhuo is below, so hibernating insects appear. Yangming governs Si Tian, Jie Chong (shelled insects) share the Si Tian Qi, hence they are quiet. Yu Chong (feathered birds) share the Zai Quan Qi, hence they breed. People suffer from left hypochondriac pain, etc. These are all Liver diseases, as Liver Wood governs the left. According to the *Meridian Chapter*: Heart and hypochondriac pain, inability to turn, slightly dusty face, indicate Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian disease. Lower back pain, inability to bend or straighten, hernia in men, lower abdominal pain in women, dry throat, dusty face, undigested stool diarrhea, indicate Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian disease. This is because Liver and Gallbladder are interior-exterior pairs; Wood is injured by Metal, so all diseases originate from the Liver. Taichong acupoint is the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian pulse, located two cun behind the root of the big toe, with a palpable arterial pulse. If Wood cannot overcome Metal, Liver Qi exhausts and Taichong pulse vanishes, leading to untreatable death.
Shaoyin Junhuo (Monarch Fire) governs the Zai Quan (Earthly Ruler), which is Earthly Qi. When Monarch Fire overflows below, flames float on rivers and marshes, dark places shine, hibernating insects do not hide. People suffer from constant abdominal rumbling, caused by Fire Qi rushing. Qi rushing to the chest is due to Fire nature flaming upward. Wheezing, inability to stand long, chills, fever, and skin pain are caused by Fire evil attacking the Lung. Eye closing/blindness is due to extreme heat and Yin deficiency fearing sunlight. Toothache and gum swelling are due to Heat attacking the Yangming Meridian. Chills and fever like malaria are due to injury to Metal and Water, and contention of Yin and Yang. Heat in the Lower Jiao causes lower abdominal pain. Heat in the Middle Jiao causes abdominal distension. Dryness constipation means pathogens are solid inside; use bitter purgatives, preferably Chengqi Tang (Chengqi Decoction). Yu Chong belong to Fire, sharing its Qi, hence they breed. Jie Chong belong to Metal, subject to its control, hence they diminish. With Shaoyin at the bottom, Heat is in the earth, so cold-toxic substances do not generate.
