Ren Chen and Ren Xu Years:
The upper position is governed by Taiyang Cold Water Si Tian (Supreme Heaven Qi), the central movement is Tai Jiao (Excessive Wood Movement), and the lower position is governed by Taiyin Damp Earth Zai Quan (Earthly Spring). When the Si Tian Qi generates the central movement, it is called Shun Hua (Smooth Transformation); since Water generates Wood, the people are comfortable and diseases are few. Its abnormal changes manifest as violent winds uprooting trees. (Ren belongs to Yang Wood; when Wind Movement is excessive, Metal Qi acts as a constraint, hence these changes.) The movement is Wind, its transformation is Wind (Wind is the transformation of Wood). Sounds (the sound of wind-wood), abundance, sprouting. (Its diseases manifest as dizziness and tremors (head shaking), and closed eyes (due to excessive Wood Movement).)
Wu Chen and Wu Xu Years:
The upper position is governed by Taiyang Cold Water Si Tian, the central movement is Tai Zheng (Excessive Fire Movement), and the lower position is governed by Taiyin Damp Earth Zai Quan. Excessive Fire Movement is constrained by the Si Tian Cold Water, thus achieving balance, known as the "He Xi Ji" (Era of Blazing Heat). The movement is Heat, its transformation is warmth, summer heat, and stifling mugginess; its abnormal changes are fierce flames and boiling turbulence. (Fire Qi steams upward; when Fire Movement is excessive, Cold Qi acts as a constraint.) Its diseases manifest as Heat stagnation. Although heat syndromes arise, plagues are rare.
Jia Chen and Jia Xu Years:
The upper position is governed by Taiyang Cold Water Si Tian, the central movement is Tai Gong (Excessive Earth Movement), and the lower position is governed by Taiyin Damp Earth Zai Quan. When the central movement overcomes the Si Tian Qi, it is called Bu He (Disorder); Earth overcomes Water, so diseases are severe. Although miscellaneous diseases are severe, plagues are mild. An excessive central movement adding to the Earthly Qi is called Tong Tian Fu (Same Heaven符). In Jia Chen and Jia Xu years, the movement coincides with Si Tian and Zai Quan as Wet Earth. When the central movement arrives at its own positional origin, it is called Sui Hui (Year Meeting); Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are positions of Earth. The movement is Yin Ai (Yin Mist), its transformation is soft, moist, heavy, and润泽 (nourishing/dewy), (all transformations of the central Wet Earth Movement). Its abnormal changes are shocks, frights, gusty winds, and sudden storms. (When Earth Movement is excessive, Wind-Wood takes advantage.) Its diseases manifest as heaviness in the lower body. (Diseases caused by Earth-Dampness.)
Geng Chen and Geng Xu Years:
The upper position is governed by Taiyang Cold Water Si Tian, the central movement is Tai Shang (Excessive Metal Movement), and the lower position is governed by Taiyin Damp Earth Zai Quan. When the central movement generates the Si Tian Qi, it is called Xiao Ni (Minor Reverse); Metal generates Water, so diseases are also mild. Excessive Central Metal Movement can also overcome Water. The movement is Cool, its transformation is misty and dewy desolation; its abnormal changes are the肃 Sha (Solemn Killing) of Metal Movement, with all things withering. Fire Qi inheriting Metal Qi represents the image of Yang Killing. Excessive Metal Qi causes Dryness diseases. Lung Metal is injured, causing back stuffiness, blurred vision, and chest fullness. In Geng Chen year, Gang Rou (Yang-Yin) fails to maintain order, and Heavenly Movement transforms into epidemic Qi. Three years later, an epidemic erupts. If mild, it develops slowly after three years; if severe, it develops quickly, starting from the third year. Rapid onset reaches Ren Wu year, slow onset reaches Gui Wei year, with Wood Epidemic erupting. Medicines should include Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), and Hua Shi (Talcum), decocted in water, cooled, and taken with Wu Wen Dan (Five Plagues Pill). In Chen and Xu years, Taiyang Cold Water should ascend to Si Tian, while Jueyin Wind Wood, previously the Right Intercalary Qi of Zai Quan from the previous year, should ascend to become the Left Intercalary Qi of Si Tian for the new year. Thus, it fears the dominance of Tian Zhu (Venus/Metal). Encountering Geng Chen or Geng Xu years, Geng is Yang Metal, arriving before its season. The Central Movement overcomes it, suddenly halting progress. Wood Movement attempts to ascend but is suppressed by Metal; unable to advance, it becomes violently stagnant and harmful, as Metal overcomes Wood. Stagnant Wood not ascending leads to Liver diseases. When Wood stagnation is about to erupt, it must wait for its proper time to act. Failure to ascend results in less Clear Qi and less Wind; killing Qi acts in Spring, frost and dew return, and grass and trees wither. People suffer from early-onset epidemics, dry throat and pharynx, limb fullness, and joint pain, due to Metal overcoming deficient Wood. (Metal's killing action in Spring, Yin overcoming and suppressing Yang, leads to plague and joint pain.) After prolonged Wood stagnation, extreme eruption occurs, causing great wind destruction. People suffer from stroke, hemiplegic bi-syndrome, and numbness in hands and feet.
Bing Chen and Bing Xu Years:
The upper position is governed by Taiyang Cold Water Si Tian, the central movement is Tai Yu (Excessive Water Movement), and the lower position is governed by Taiyin Damp Earth Zai Quan. When Movement and Qi are identical, it is called Tian Fu (Heavenly符); both are Water. The movement is Cold, its transformation is freezing, bleak, and piercing cold, which is the correct transformation of Bing year Water Movement. Its abnormal changes are ice, snow, frost, and hail. (Water is excessive, Earth Qi acts as a constraint.) Its diseases manifest as severe Cold lingering in valleys and ravines. (Convergences of sinews, bones, limbs, and joints; excessive Water Movement leads to severe Cold and qi stagnation.) In Chen and Xu years, Shaoyang Ministerial Fire descends to Earth, and Taiyin should ascend to Zai Quan. However, Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, previously the Right Intercalary Qi of Si Tian from the previous year, should descend to become the Left Intercalary Qi of Zai Quan for this year. Thus, it fears Di Xuan (Mercury/Water), being blocked by Water victory. Encountering excessive Water Movement arriving early: in Bing Chen and Bing Xu years, Water Movement inherits it, preventing descent. Red clouds appear, but Black Qi arises instead. Warmth begins to generate, but Cold Qi strikes suddenly; severely, hail forms. These are transformations of Cold Water overcoming Fire. (Same meaning as Shaoyin failing to descend in Bing Shen year.) In Bing Chen and Bing Xu years, Shaoyang Ministerial Fire should descend to Zai Quan, but encountering these two years, Water Movement inherits it, preventing descent, leading to Fire Stagnation and transforming into plague. Medicines should include Liang Ge San (Cool the Chest Powder), combined with Dao Chi San (Guide Out Red Powder) plus Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), and Wu Wen Dan. Prolonged failure to descend causes latent Qi to stagnate; Cold Qi transforms into Heat, Red Wind creates epidemics. People suffer from red face, vexation, headache, and dizziness. Red Qi manifests, and Heat disease is about to arise. Shaoyang Fire Stagnation causes disease. With Taiyang Cold Water Si Tian and Taiyin Damp Earth Zai Quan, Heavenly Qi is solemn, Earthly Qi is quiet, and Water and Earth harmonize. People suffer from Cold-Dampness, muscle flaccidity, foot weakness preventing walking, damp diarrhea, and blood hemorrhage. (Fire Stagnation diseases are caused by Cold-Dampness.) After mid-year, Earthly Qi governs. From the Third Qi until after the dispersion of extreme rain, transitioning to the Fourth Qi, Zai Quan takes effect, with Taiyin occupying it. Thus, rain faces North Pole, and Damp Transformation spreads. Moisture flows through all things, the virtue of Earth. Thunder moves below, indicating Fire Stagnation eruption. The Ke Qi (Guest Qi) of Taiyang Cold Water Si Tian adds onto the Zhu Qi (Host Qi). The First Qi of this year adds onto the Host Qi. In the First Qi, Shaoyang is active. The Zai Quan Qi from the previous year migrates here, hence called Di Qi Qian (Earth Qi Migration). Subsequent cases follow this pattern.
First Qi: Shaoyang Ministerial Fire is active. Earth Qi migrates, Qi becomes greatly warm, grass blooms early. (Last year's Final Qi was Lord Fire, this year's First Qi is Ministerial Fire; intersection of two Fires causes warmth and early blooming.) People suffer from Warm Diseases: fever, headache, vomiting, skin ulcers. Guest Qi Ministerial Fire combines with Host Qi Wind Wood; Wind and Fire clash, causing these diseases.
Second Qi: Yangming Dry Metal is active. People look grim, grass encounters cold, so great Coolness arrives and Fire Qi is suppressed. People suffer from Qi stagnation and abdominal fullness; Cold begins, Clear-Cold stagnates in the middle, Yang Qi cannot circulate.
Third Qi: Taiyang Cold Water is active. Heavenly administration spreads, Cold Qi moves, rain descends. People suffer from Cold turning into internal Heat, abscesses, dysentery, heart heat, and stuffiness. Untreated, death ensues. (If one is injured by Cold and develops Heat disease, with Taiyang Cold Water Si Tian, Cold Qi descends, Heart Qi responds upward. Cold insults Yang, so Fire responds accordingly; if untreated, Yang perishes and death occurs.)
Note: Among the Six Qi Si Tian, all mention "untreated leads to death," specifically stated for Taiyang Cold Water, showing that Yang Qi is the root of life and must be protected.
Fourth Qi: Jueyin Wind Wood Guest Qi is active, adding onto Taiyin Damp Earth Host Qi. Thus, Wind and Damp contend, and Wind transforms into Rain. Wood receives Earth's transformation, leading to growth, maturation, and completion. People suffer from Jueyin Wind Wood Qi. During Great Heat, Wood generates Fire, so people suffer from intense Heat, as Guest overcomes Host. Spleen Earth is injured, leading to shortness of breath, muscle flaccidity, foot weakness, and dysentery with red and white discharge.
Fifth Qi: Shaoyin Lord Fire is active. After mid-year, Earthly Qi governs. With Taiyin Zai Quan, it receives Lord Fire's transformation. Yang returns and transforms, grass grows, matures, and completes. All things grow and complete; people are comfortable and disease-free.
Final Qi: Taiyin Damp Earth Zai Quan, Earth Qi is correct, so Damp Command acts. Yin condenses in the Great Void, dust fills suburbs. People prefer Yang and dislike Yin, so bleakness comes with Damp Command and Cold Wind. Wind can overcome Damp, hence called Fan (Reverse). Reverse means conception dies. This is because humans are Luo Chong (Naked Creatures), transforming from above. Non-seasonal Wind Wood addition means Earth transformation cannot nurture. For the above ten years, Cold Water is Si Tian and Wet Earth is Zai Quan. Damp should be dried, Cold should be warmed. Bitter flavors transform from Fire; treat Cold with Heat. Cold Water Si Tian causes Fire Qi stagnation; Wet Earth Zai Quan causes Water Qi stagnation. Thus, one must suppress the Qi causing stagnation, so the stagnant Qi relaxes. Cold Water Si Tian means Heart Fire cannot overcome; Taiyin Zai Quan means Kidney Water cannot overcome. Suppress excesses, support deficiencies, so Qi does not violently exceed, and diseases do not arise.
Si Hai Years (Ding Si, Ding Hai, Gui Si, Gui Hai, Ji Si, Ji Hai, Yi Si, Yi Hai, Xin Si, Xin Hai):
Jueyin Wind Wood is Si Tian, representing the seasonal Wind transformation phenomenon, the Qi of Heaven. Shaoyang Ministerial Fire is Zai Quan, the Qi of Earth. Jueyin Wind Wood corresponds to the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian, belonging to Eastern Wood, flourishing for 72 days in Spring. Wood Evil attacks Earth, so all diseases primarily involve the Spleen. Its transformation is Wind; all generating things undergo Wind transformation, causing floating, anger, shaking, and flying clouds/objects. Wind excess above causes the Great Void to be dusty and dim, clouds and objects chaotic. Cold generates Spring Qi, yet flowing water does not freeze. However, Wind victory allows Metal Command to take over, Clear-Solid Qi moves, so hibernating insects do not emerge. People suffer from stomach pain, distension supporting both hypochondria, blocked throat and pharynx, inability to eat, stiff tongue base, vomiting after eating, abdominal fullness, inability to eat, loose stools, masses, and urinary retention. Diseases originate in the Spleen. Since Wood Evil attacks Earth, all diseases originate in the Spleen. Chongyang Point, Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian pulse, located on the dorsum of the foot, pulsating. If Earth cannot overcome Wood, Spleen-Stomach Qi exhausts, Chongyang pulse vanishes, death is incurable.
Shaoyang Ministerial Fire is Zai Quan. Fire Excess Victory (Ministerial Fire excess below) causes flames to brighten suburbs. Extreme Heat generates Cold, so Cold and Heat alternate. People suffer from bloody and white dysentery, Heat in Lower Jiao, lower abdominal pain, red urine, and bloody stool. Remaining symptoms are similar to Shaoyin Zai Quan patterns. Feathered creatures belong to Fire, sharing its Qi, so they thrive. Armored creatures belong to Metal, controlled by it, so they decline.
