First Prescription (Western Medicine) Trousseau's Powder ○.3, Sodium Bicarbonate 1.0, divided into six packets, three packets per day. This prescription is taken in three doses during the day (total of three doses).

This prescription is taken twice daily, morning and evening. (Modifications consist only of these herbs).
Third Prescription (Western Medicine) Ginseng Essence ○.0 once, Lead Nitrate (Cangqian) ○.4, Tannic Acid and Bismuth Compound 1.0, divided into four packets. Taken from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, totaling three packets; one packet taken at 5:00 AM on the second day.
Fourth Prescription (Chinese Medicine) Prepared Astragali Radix (Huangqi) 1 liang, Taishen 1 liang, Stir-fried Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) 1 liang, Stir-fried Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) 2 liang, Earth-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) 3 liang, Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi) 8 qian, Lycii Fructus (Gouqi) 8 qian, Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) 5 qian, added with Maltose Sugar (Yitang) 1 liang, refined into an ointment/paste. Take one small tea spoon per dose, three times daily.
Fifth Prescription (Western Medicine) Tannic Acid ○.5, Lactose 3.0, divided into twenty packets, one packet per dose. This is kept as a backup for emergencies and is not mandatory.
For this condition, the Second Prescription is the main formula. It is taken orally along with the Third Prescription, approximately more than twenty doses in total, showing significant efficacy. After about ten days, diarrhea decreases significantly. After a few more days, both eyes can open fully, and nasal congestion gradually clears. Although ancient texts do not list these two symptoms, I have personally observed several cases. For chronic infantile convulsions accompanied by nasal or ocular symptoms, there is no need for doubt; treating with Spleen-tonifying and Kidney-nourishing methods invariably yields results. Gradually, diarrhea stops and fever subsides. The pulse on the right hand shows improvement first, followed by the left pulse becoming stronger. The pale complexion gradually returns to normal. Then, the Fourth Prescription is prepared as a paste for regular consumption to restore health. The Fifth and Sixth Prescriptions are merely backups; if diarrhea recurs during the period of taking the paste, they are taken once to ensure complete safety.
Appendicitis (8) Appendicitis is a Western medical term, also known as inflammation of the vermiform appendix. Some claim it corresponds to the Chinese medicine concept of Intestinal Abscess (Changyong), but this is absolutely incorrect and should not be conflated. Given the high prevalence of this condition and the tendency of Chinese medicine practitioners to misdiagnose it—using methods such as promoting Qi circulation, digesting food, breaking stagnation, or even heavily using hot herbs, which can kill patients easily—I adopt this Western medical term to establish a standard.
(Cause) This disease occurs when bacteria or indigestible substances enter the appendix, forming fecaliths that promote inflammation. Acute cases are generally included in Chinese medicine under terms such as Abdominal Pain (Futong) or Colic Typhoid (Jiaochangsha), and various folk names. For example, "Zhonghan" (Cold Invasion) often refers to acute severe abdominal pain leading to death. Chronic cases also have folk names such as "Root of Stomachache."
(Symptoms) Sudden severe pain erupts in the right iliac fossa (the depression near the thigh in the lower right abdomen), spreading to the rest of the abdomen. Symptoms include vomiting, constipation or increased body temperature, aversion to cold, abdominal distension. In severe cases, fever persists, abdominal inflammation and swelling occur, leading to peritonitis and death. Chronic cases involve recurrent pain in the right lower abdomen, intermittent but worsening over time. Eventually, peritonitis develops, proving fatal. Acute cases feature sudden severe pain in the right lower abdomen. After three to five days, there is a tendency toward suppuration. Higher fever leads to whole-abdomen swelling and pain, ultimately resulting in intestinal perforation, inducing peritonitis, and causing death. Women suffer from this condition more frequently, and it is critical. Chinese medicine lacks a correct understanding of this condition, often delaying treatment and causing death, hence this clarification.
(Treatment) Western surgical excision is the only fundamental cure. However, this method must be performed early, and the patient must be physically strong with complete surgical facilities to ensure safety. Otherwise, death due to surgery is common. Recently, my friend Mr. Wang Yuezhi (Principal of the Academy of Fine Arts) died from appendectomy. Therefore, the application of surgery requires caution. My eldest son, Hanzhen, suffered from appendicitis and was cured by surgery at Jinan Hospital. Internal Chinese herbal medicines have repeatedly proven ineffective, so I will not hide this fact. Western internal anesthetics, injections, and external anti-inflammatory ointments are relatively effective but are not curative. Recently, I discovered a Chinese medicine external treatment method that has been tested successfully multiple times. If this method proves specific, future patients can avoid the risks of surgery and be cured, which would be a joy.
Formula: Use fresh Sophora japonica bark (Huaimu Pi), about one cun square. Scrape off the outer old bark, keeping the middle layer. Place one fen of genuine Moschus (Shexiang) inside the patient's umbilicus. Cover with the Sophora bark. Place a moxa cone (Ai Qiu), size of a fingertip, on the bark and ignite it. Moxibustion is performed for four or five sessions (Zhuang). If the pain is too severe, slightly lift the bark to create a small gap from the skin; do not lift it too far or slow down. Replace the bark to cover the umbilicus. After moxibustion, a blister forms inside the umbilicus containing fluid. Pierce it, wipe clean with sterile cotton, and the appendiceal inflammation disappears immediately. Pain and swelling subside gradually. Even if the patient has fever, abdominal pain, and is in critical condition, this formula can save them.
Mr. Wu cited a case: His friend, working at a famous hospital in Beijing, suddenly suffered severe appendicitis for several days. The right abdomen was highly swollen and unbearable in pain. The patient absolutely refused surgery. Despite the hospital's persuasion, he was carried home. At this point, signs of suppuration were evident, with high fever and severe right abdominal swelling. Touching it caused unbearable pain (both internal and external). Hospital colleagues regretted it, believing there was no hope. A fellow townsman of the patient suggested using the Sophora bark and Moschus moxibustion method (Reportedly common in Jiangsu and Zhejiang for abdominal pain, not specifically for appendicitis). Reluctantly, the family tried it and achieved great results. The umbilical blister was not pierced. Pain stopped, swelling subsided, and he recovered in a few days. Mr. Wu could provide the address and name, but I forgot. Mr. Wu is a sincere gentleman researching both Chinese and Western medicine and currently holds a medical position, so his words are credible.
I believe this method contains profound principles. Sophora bark is bitter and astringent, Moschus is penetrating, and combined with moxa fire guidance, seeking similar energies draws the blood stasis and congestion near the appendix out through the umbilicus and abdomen. The internal inflammation naturally disappears. This is an interesting medical principle. Regrettably, I learned of this method too late. Testing it yielded only two cases, both successful. Here is the heavier case recorded below: (Medical Record) Mr. Zheng, residing at No. 8 Dagbangbang Hutong, Xisi, Beijing, aged 24. Consulted on September 15, Year 26. Patient had strange pain in the right lower abdomen, unable to walk, vomiting, fever for three days. High swelling in the appendix area, scanty urine and stool. Pulse was deep, rapid, and forceful. I advised immediate hospital surgery, but the family was too poor to afford hospitalization and begged for treatment, so I treated him for free. Using the Sophora bark moxibustion method, I prescribed clearly and instructed them to follow the method. Also administered Epsom Salts (Liusu) 15.0, to be taken at once. According to Western medicine, laxatives are contraindicated for this condition. However, based on my experience, at the onset of illness, clearing intestinal contents first, followed by analgesics, is faster. Also prescribed Morphin Hydrochloride 0.01 combined with Lactose 1.5 as one packet, giving three packets to be taken throughout the day and night due to unbearable pain. Simultaneously, apply the Sophora bark and Moschus moxibustion method. On the second day, upon consultation, miraculous effects were seen. He reported that after only two moxa sessions, pain stopped, and no blister formed in the umbilicus. Vomiting and abdominal pain ceased, abdominal swelling subsided. Then administered Opium Drops 50 drops, instructed to take 5 drops every two hours. Completely cured after about six days. I considered the inflammation too severe, fearing spread to the peritoneum, so curing it with this formula was unexpected.
Fifty years ago, my sister-in-law Mrs. Chen died from this condition. At that time, I did not know medicine. I recall that whenever she suffered abdominal pain, it was unbearable, requiring someone to beat her back, sometimes vomiting. Every few days or dozens of days, she had abdominal pain once, indicating chronic appendicitis. Most of the medicines she took cannot be remembered, but at the critical moment, she took Croton Seed (Badou) because of constipation. Near death, she passed large amounts of extremely foul-smelling, pus-and-blood-like material, leading to whole-abdomen swelling. After death, her whole body bloated, mouth and nose bled, head as large as a bucket, hands as large as a winnowing basket, looking terrifying. There were no Western doctors then, nor the name for appendicitis. From this, we can infer how many died from this disease, especially those with chronic appendicitis who were ignored and mistreated, which is lamentable.
Hypochondriac Pain (9) Hypochondriac pain here refers to a newly acquired condition, meaning Pleurisy in Western medicine. Other long-standing hypochondriac pains (Intercostal Neuralgia), Pleural Cancer, Liver Cirrhosis, Gallstones, etc., are not included in this example.
(Cause) This condition arises from cold/flu, trauma, pneumonia, or spread from inflammation of other organs. It is particularly common due to anger or depression. Chinese medicine attributes this to Liver and Gallbladder Qi stagnation and Blood stasis, which has rational basis. Thus, the following points adopt Chinese medicine theories.
(Symptoms) This condition is divided into three types:
1. Dry Pleurisy: Only feels stabbing pain in the chest and hypochondrium, worse during breathing. Pulse is typically wiry and rapid.
2. Exudative Pleurisy: Starts with aversion to cold, developing moderate remittent fever. Dyspnea, severe stabbing chest pain, dry cough, wiry and rapid pulse, loss of appetite. When exudate accumulates excessively, the patient can feel it, and auscultation may reveal slight oscillating sounds.
3. Suppurative Pleurisy: Frequent chills followed by high fever. Pulse is typically surging, large, and rapid. All above symptoms are severe. Stool is mostly dry, urine is short and red.
If these three symptom patterns are not treated correctly, they easily induce Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Suppurative pleurisy, with frequent chills and high fever, poses a life threat. Inducing peritonitis is also dangerous.
(Treatment) For exudative and suppurative types, Western surgical intervention is good, using a cannula needle to aspirate exudate and pus. Among internal medicines, Salicylic Acid Sodium (Salol/Saccharin? Note: Text says "Sa Li Tian Er Suan Na Du Dang Mo", likely a transliteration error for a salicylate compound like Sodium Salicylate or similar antipyretic/anti-inflammatory) is highly effective. Others are cathartics and anesthetics/analgesics. Recently, my son Hanzhen suffered from severe exudative pleurisy and was cured by taking Saccharin 4.0, Kudingcha 2.0, distilled water 200.0, divided into six doses, taken three times daily. It is also effective. However, Chinese medicine treats this condition focusing on the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, distinguishing Qi stagnation, Blood stasis, Phlegm-fluid retention, and Deficiency/Excess/Cold/Heat. Not only can it fundamentally cure new-onset hypochondriac pain, but it is also effective for long-standing hypochondriac pain and neuralgia, absolutely avoiding the pain of necessary surgery and the risk of affecting other organs. This peaceful and effective method of Chinese medicine deserves emphasis.
For dry pleurisy, Chinese medicine finds Citrus Reticulata Viridocarpon (Juluo), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Inula Flower (Xuanfuhua), Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gouteng), Gentiana Root (Longdancao), Red Peony Root (Chishao), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Green Tangerine Peel (Qingpi), and Sichuan Chinaberry Fruit (Chuanlianzi) effective. For exudative types, Poria (Fuling), Tangerine Peel (Juhong), Pinellia Ternata (Banxia)—known in Chinese medicine as Phlegm-Fluid—are used heavily. Combined with previous herbs, they are always effective. Fuling must be used in doses of 5-6 qian or more; Banxia 2-3 qian. For suppurative pleurisy, Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), Chenpi, Qingpi, Trichosanthes Seed (Gualouren), Pangolin Scales (Chuanshanjia), Dandelion (Pugongying), Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua), Peach Kernel (Taoren), Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi), Prunella Spike (Xiakucao), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao) are used. Referencing Chinese surgical treatment for Liver Abscess (Ganyong), as this condition approximates liver abscess. These reduce swelling and fever with miraculous effects. For long-standing hypochondriac pain, adding Safflower (Honghua), Angelica Sinensis Root Tail (Guixu), Peach Kernel (Taoren), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusu) focuses on unblocking blood collaterals, having profound significance. For accompanying cough, add Loquat Leaf (Pipaye), Apricot Kernel (Xingren), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu). For rebellious Qi, add Aquilaria Wood (Xiang); for Yin deficiency with hemoptysis, add White Peony Root (Baishao). All are flexible and effective, rarely leading to critical conditions. Rheubarb (Chuanjun) is also effective.
(Medical Record) Mr. Zhao, residing at No. 6 Dagbangbang Hutong, Xisi Paifang, Beijing, aged 18, ironworker. Due to anger and fighting, he developed hypochondriac pain on April 25, Year 27. Upon consultation, he had been sick for four days. Fever persisted day and night at 39.6°C. Pain prevented lying down. Cough, nausea, vomiting. Affected side was highly swollen and raised, pain worse during breathing, unable to touch. Aversion to cold for four days unresolved. Stool dry and bound, urine red and short. Tongue yellow. Pulse surging and rapid on both sides. Mental confusion. Exhaled breath had putrid odor. Suspected suppuration. Felt fluid accumulation in ribs, abnormal distension. Diagnosed as Liver Meridian Stasis-Heat Hypochondriac Pain, preventing internal abscess. Urgently detoxify and soothe Liver, incorporating surgical theory. Prescribed: First Prescription: Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao) 6 qian, Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua) 4 qian, Dandelion (Pugongying) 5 qian, Trichosanthes Seed (Gualouren) 4 qian, Green Tangerine Peel (Qingpi) 2 qian, Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) 2 qian, Apricot Kernel (Xingren) 2 qian, Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu) 3 qian, Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie) 1 qian, Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) 1 qian, Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gouteng) 3 qian, Moutan Cortex (Danpi) 4 qian, Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusu) 2 qian. Decoct and take. Internal use, external cold compress applied to the highly swollen intercostal area three times daily. Chinese medicine taken at bedtime. Also Aspirin 3.0, Lactose 3.0, divided into six packets, twice daily. Two packets taken between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM, preparing six packets for three days. Chinese medicine: First dose induces slight sweat. Second dose, aversion to cold resolves, remove Jingjie and Fangfeng, continue with remaining prescription for two doses. Within three days, condition greatly reduced, fever dropped to just over 38°C, pain relieved, swelling subsided slightly. Pulse still surging and rapid. Patient came for consultation, deeply grateful. Still unable to lie down, breathing painful, one bowel movement, urine still red and short. Prescribed: Second Prescription: Raw White Peony Root (Baishao) 2 qian, Bamboo Leaves (Zhuye) 3 qian, Moutan Cortex (Danpi) 3 qian, Apricot Kernel (Xingren) 3 qian, Green Tangerine Peel (Qingpi) 2 qian, Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) 3 qian, Areca Seed (Dafupi) 2 qian, Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusu) 2 qian, Peucedanum Root (Qianhu) 2 qian, Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi) 2 qian, Gentiana Root (Longdancao) 2 qian, Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu) 2 qian, Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gouteng) 1 qian, Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao) 4 qian. Decoct and take. Continue previous medication method. During the day, administer Saccharin 4.0, Kudingcha 2.0, distilled water 100.0, divided into six doses, taken over two days. Take Chinese medicine once before bed. Total two doses. Hypochondriac pain completely stopped, temperature 38°C, pulse gradually normalized. Still coughing, dry stool. Prevent transformation into pneumonia (Pleurisy inducing tuberculosis has many cases). Prescribed: Third Prescription: Trichosanthes Seed (Gualouren) 2 qian, White Peony Root (Baishao) 3 qian, Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua) 4 qian, Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gouteng) 3 qian, Apricot Kernel (Xingren) 3 qian, Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu) 3 qian, Moutan Cortex (Danpi) 3 qian, Small Green Tangerine Peel (Xiaoqingpi) 2 qian, Tangerine Peel (Juhong) 2 qian, Perilla Fruit (Suzi) 2 qian, Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong) 3 qian, Asparagus Tuber (Tiantong) 3 qian, Mulberry Leaf (Sangye) 3 qian. Decoct and take. Continue previous medication method. During the day, administer Sodium Bicarbonate (Chongcao) 3.0, Trousseau's Powder ○.3, divided into six packets, taken over two days, three times daily. Take Chinese medicine once before bed. Total two doses. Later, reduce Western medicine, take five more doses, completely cured.
This condition is severe pleurisy, requiring combined Chinese and Western medicine for rapid effect. Using only Chinese or only Western medicine does not yield rapid results. The usage of these Chinese and Western drugs has been tested for over forty years with no adverse effects.
Hernia (10) Hernia here differs from the Western medical concept of Hernial Pain. It is purely based on Chinese medicine disease names. Do not misunderstand it with Western interpretations. Hence the difference.
(Cause) Chinese medicine texts state that Ren Mai disease causes seven types of internal hernia in men. It also states that hernia diseases are inseparable from the Liver, thus identifying hernia as a Liver disease. Carefully examining Western medical terms such as Wind Hernia Pain, Gallstone Hernia Pain, Orchitis, and Charneaux, they are somewhat similar to the Seven Hernias in Chinese medicine, but do not match perfectly. Except for testicular swelling and pain pulling to the lower abdomen, which everyone knows as hernia, there are several types of internal hernia. Although Chinese medicine texts explain them, inexperienced physicians often fail to recognize them clinically, so special clarification is necessary. The names of the Seven Hernias in Chinese medicine may seem bizarre, but some parts are valuable and unexplored by Western medicine. Scholars can study them carefully.
(Symptoms) Besides scrotal/testicular swelling and pain pulling to the lower abdomen, or testicular painless swelling, which people call "Qi Hernia," no need to detail. The internal hernia symptoms that are hard to recognize but commonly seen are: the patient occasionally feels a tangible object gathering in the abdomen, horizontal or vertical, one or two. When the disease attacks, it rushes straight upward or circles the waist and abdomen causing pain (upward rushing pain is more common), causing nausea, syncope, rushing up to the stomach, acid regurgitation, fullness, extreme suffering. Then it suddenly disappears, all symptoms vanish, returning to formlessness, like a normal person. When rushing upward in the abdomen, resembling a cucumber, rushing directly to the stomach, causing dizziness, blackouts, nausea, and Qi syncope is very common. Such repeated attacks, year after year, cause general weakness. Pulse is typically wiry, solid, and forceful. Body temperature is usually not high, but during attacks, there may be alternating chills and fever, and cold limbs. Cold, Heat, Deficiency, and Excess must be carefully distinguished. All are internal hernias. See the Medical Record of Mr. Lv Xinpu listed below.
When this internal hernia attacks, it resembles Hysteria (Zang Zao). However, Hysteria is a mental disorder, with no tangible hard object rushing up to the heart/mouth in the abdomen. Internal hernia attacks involve a tangible object rushing up. They can be distinguished. The two conditions must not be confused.
