A patient suffered severe corporal punishment, resulting in broken skin with profuse bleeding like a stream, internal muscle erosion, dark discoloration, and swelling that extended upwards to the chest and back, and downwards to the toes. The patient was unconscious, unable to eat, and mentally confused. Immediately, hot black sheepskin was applied to the affected area, followed by the administration of child's urine, wine, and thin rice gruel. Subsequently, decoctions for clearing the Liver, invigorating blood, regulating Qi, and strengthening the Spleen were given. Only then did the patient's mental state slightly recover, at which point he complained of stiffness and pain throughout the body. Large doses of herbs for nourishing blood and tonifying Qi were then used, leading to the resolution of swelling and the return of appetite. In mid-winter, the blood stasis had coagulated and failed to suppurate. Therefore, large tonifying formulas were administered to strengthen Yang Qi, after which the pus matured. It was then drained using Bian stones (stone acupuncture), exposing the bone. Danggui Ointment was applied externally, and over 100 doses of the previous internal medicine were taken, gradually promoting tissue regeneration.
Another patient had an ulcerated wound that failed to heal. Due to the presence of heat-toxin internally, cold-natured herbs were desired for treatment. I stated: This is due to deficiency of both Blood and Qi, preventing healing. Without using herbs such as Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Fuling (Poria), and Renshen (Ginseng) to cultivate the Spleen Earth, how could muscle tissue regenerate? How could one use cold-natured, draining herbs again, thereby further damaging Qi and Blood! Consequently, the aforementioned formula was used, and the patient recovered.
A third patient presented with abdominal distension, vomiting, and dizziness. A prescription containing Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Honghua (Carthami Flos), and Taoren (Persicae Semen) was prescribed. After four doses, the symptoms stabilized. Later, excessive bleeding led to unconsciousness and visual obscurity. The patient regained consciousness after administering Shiquan Dabu Tang (Decoction for Complete Great Tonification). At this time, muscles were ulcerated with dripping pus, tendons were spasmodic, and bones were painful. Palpation revealed a floating and choppy pulse on the superficial level, and a deep and weak pulse on the deep level. This indicated that Qi and Blood depletion failed to nourish the tendons; tendon deficiency failed to bind the bones. Thus, herbs for nourishing Qi and Blood were administered, resulting in recovery.
A fourth patient, after the healing of a beating wound, neglected proper recuperation, leading to unclear head and eyes. After taking wind-dispelling and phlegm-resolving herbs, dizziness worsened. After taking Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Calculus Bovis Heart-Calming Pill), abdominal pain ensued. The marks of the beating became swollen and itchy, accompanied by fever, thirst, loss of appetite, and rising phlegm-Qi. It was initially considered a recurrence of residual toxin from the beating wound. However, the left Chi (Cunian) pulse was found to be surging and large, yet empty upon heavy pressure. I stated: This is insufficiency of the Kidney Meridian, failing to grasp Qi and return it to its source. A formula containing Renshen (Ginseng), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), and Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), plus Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata with honey) was administered, leading to rapid recovery. Later, due to overexertion, symptoms of heat-thirst, headache, fatigue, and poor appetite appeared. The patient recovered after taking Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Decoction for Supplementing the Middle and Augmenting Qi) supplemented with Maimendong and Wuweizi.
