A volume of medical books by Master Dongyuan has already been carved into woodblocks and printed at my residence for dissemination in the world. Now I have obtained another book, which also contains Master Dongyuan's methods for treating diseases, titled *Ci Shi Nan Zhi* (This Matter Is Difficult to Understand). Generally speaking, the Way of medicine is used to prolong human life and aligns with the creative virtue of Heaven and Earth that generates all things; it must not be extinguished overnight. When Qin burned the Six Classics, the Way of Duke Zhou and Confucius was abandoned. Fortunately, medical texts survived. By examining these classics, one can understand the dialogues between Huangdi (Yellow Emperor) and Qibo, who repeatedly deduced and clarified the mysteries of Wuyun Qi (Five Movements and Seven Qi, referring to the dynamics of the Five Elements and six climatic factors) to establish methods of tonification (Bu, 补) and purgation (Xie, 泄), thereby saving people from illness, as human life and death depend on this. Since the times of Qibo and Huangdi have long passed, those who can deduce the Five Movements and Seven Qi, observe the signs of Yin-Yang ascending and descending, determine the causes of deficiency and excess in the Zang-Fu organs (Zang-Fu Organs, 脏腑), integrate the connections of the meridians above and below, and revive the dead are rare. Alas! The one who could inherit and illuminate this tradition is none other than Master Dongyuan. This book of his contains secrets not transmitted to outsiders; indeed, it is difficult for people to comprehend. Although the formulas record their profound principles, there are aspects that cannot be explicitly stated; they rely on mental comprehension and spiritual resonance. Xu Yinzong of the Tang Dynasty said, "The practice of medicine relies on intent/thought." If one thinks with precision, one grasps it—this is what is meant here. Mencius also said, "Carpenters and wheelwrights can teach others the compass and square (rules and standards), but they cannot teach them skill." This is also the same meaning. I use this for longevity and cultivation, sharing it with scholars everywhere. Thus, this may be a small contribution to benefiting humanity and aiding all living beings.
