The pulse of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian originates at the tip of the thumb. It emerges at Shaoshang (Shao Shang, Well Point), on the medial side of the thumb. The Well point is located at a distance from the corner of the nail like the width of a leek leaf. Its branch diverges from behind the wrist and leads to the medial end of the index finger.
The pulse of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian originates at the tip of the index finger. It enters the medial side of the index finger. The Well point is located at a distance from the nail corner like the width of a leek leaf. (One exhalation)
The pulse of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian originates at the tip of the great toe. It follows the medial side of the toe. The Well point, Yinbai (Yin Bai), is located at a distance from the nail corner like the width of a leek leaf.
The pulse of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian originates at the medial end of the little finger. It follows the medial end of the finger. The Well point is located at a distance from the nail corner like the width of a leek leaf.
The pulse of the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian originates at the tip of the little finger. The Well point is located in the depression one fen below the nail.
The pulse of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian emerges at Zhiyin (Zhi Yin), on the lateral side of the little toe. The Well point (Metal element) is located at a distance from the nail corner like the width of a leek leaf. This is the tip of the foot's little toe.
The pulse of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian originates below the little toe as the Well point, Yongquan (Yong Quan).
The pulse of the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian: its straight course runs along the middle finger to its end. The Well point, Zhongchong (Zhong Chong), is located in the depression at a distance from the nail corner like the width of a leek leaf. Its branch diverges from the palm and leads to the end of the ring finger.
The pulse of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian originates at the tip of the ring finger. The Well point is located at a distance from the nail corner like the width of a leek leaf.
The pulse of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian emerges at Qiaoyin (Qiao Yin), at the tip of the fourth toe. The Well point is located like the width of a leek leaf. Its branch ascends into the space between the bones of the great toe, emerges at its end, returns to pass through the nail, and emerges among the hairs.
The pulse of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian originates at the tip of the great toe. It enters the area where the hairs gather. The Well point, Dadun (Da Dun), and the area among the hairs are located at a distance from the nail corner like the width of a leek leaf. (Six exhalations)
These constitute the "Great Connecting Meridians" method, drawing Yang from Yin and Yin from Yang.
Excerpted from the postscript to Li Dongyuan's "Twenty-Five Discourses".
Yangming headache, accompanied by spontaneous sweating and fever, is treated with Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix).
Shaoyang headache, with a wiry pulse and alternating chills and fever, is treated with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix).
Taiyang headache, with aversion to wind and cold, is treated with Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma).
Taiyin headache, with phlegm, heaviness of the body, and abdominal pain, is treated with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma).
Shaoyin headache, where the qi and blood of the three Yin and three Yang meridians of the hand do not circulate smoothly, leading to cold feet and counterflow, resulting in cold jue headache, is treated with Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma).
Jueyin headache, with neck pain and a slightly floating and slow pulse, indicates the disease is about to transfer to the Taiyang meridian, at which point it will recover. However, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) should also be used.
Qi deficiency headache is treated with Huangqi (Astragali Radix).
Blood deficiency headache is treated with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
Headache due to combined Qi and Blood deficiency is treated with Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
Headache due to Cold Damage: for those without sweat, use Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction); for those with sweat, use Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Headache originating from the Taiyang meridian: if it transforms into Yangming headache, use Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction); Shaoyang headache uses Chaihu Tang (Bupleuri Decoction); Taiyin headache, if the pulse is floating, uses Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction); if the pulse is deep, uses Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction); Shaoyin headache, with a deep, faint pulse and fever, uses Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Asari Decoction); Jueyin headache due to external injury to its own meridian uses Guizhi Mahuang Ge Ban Tang (Half Cinnamon Twig and Half Ephedra Decoction).
Vomiting with slight spitting of clear water is treated with Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction), indicating internal pathology.
Master Yi said: Without Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), dampness cannot be removed; without Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), stagnation cannot be resolved; without Tianxiong (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), upper Jiao Yang deficiency cannot be tonified; without Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), lower Jiao Yang deficiency cannot be tonified. For treating inability to see far but ability to see near, or conversely, inability to see near, or leprosy caused by wind pathogen, Dizhi Wan (Dizhi Pill) is the primary treatment.
Sheng Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, dried by explosion, 4 liang), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, boiled and heart removed), Zhike (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, stir-fried with flour, rind removed, 2 liang), Gan Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos, unopened, weighed 2 liang).
Grind these into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. If able to eat and drink tea, take with clear tea water; if unable to eat, take with warm wine. After meals, Prepared Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) may also be used. (This theory is also found in the Eye Section of *Lan Shi Mi Cang*).
To treat inability to see near but ability to see far, take Ju Fang Dingzhi Wan (Official Formulation Dingzhi Pill).
Ability to see far is attributed to Fire; inability to see near is attributed to lack of Water. The treatment method should tonify the Kidney.
Ability to see near is attributed to having Water; inability to see far is attributed to lack of Fire. The treatment method should tonify the Heart.
Tonifying the Kidney involves tonifying the Foot-Shaoyin meridian; tonifying the Heart involves tonifying the Hand-Shaoyin meridian.
To tonify the Kidney, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) plus Muli (Ostreae Concha). To tonify the Heart, use Dingzhi Wan (Dingzhi Pill) plus Fuling (Poria).
For inability to see near, take Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) in the morning.
For inability to see far, take Dingzhi Wan (Dingzhi Pill) before bed.
To treat chronic seminal emission and slipping that does not heal, use Guzhen Wan (Guzhen Pill).
Foot and Hand Shaoyin Meridians:
Inability to see far: take Dingzhi Wan (Dingzhi Pill) before bed.
Use only Muli (Ostreae Concha), quantity unspecified. Quench seven times in vinegar inside a clay pot, grind into powder, make pills with vinegar paste the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, with salt water on an empty stomach.
If all six pulses are wiry and feel deficient under the fingers, this is pain due to Spleen and Stomach weakness. Symptoms include decreased appetite and incessant thirst, epigastric fullness and abdominal pain, or a sensation of tightness in the abdomen like a rope binding it urgently, difficult urination, irregular bowel movements, and shortness of spirit. This medicine specifically treats incessant severe thirst, narrowness in the abdomen, and reduced food intake, showing great efficacy.
Baifuling (Poria, peeled), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, white pith removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, blanched with boiling water and dried, each weighed 1 liang; reduce ginger in autumn).
Grind together into powder, make pills with refined honey the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, dissolve in white water. Chew finely on an empty stomach before meals, or swallow with white water. Avoid raw, cold, hard foods, and prevent excessive anger and overthinking.
If the six pulses are deep and tight, and do not throb upon pressure, this indicates the Bladder overcoming the Small Intestine. Symptoms may include incessant diarrhea and abdominal distension, or pure red blood in stool, or pus and blood mixed. Although there is much stool, there is no thirst, spirit is short, or complexion is pale and washed out; this is due to blood loss. Or, yellow complexion with shortness of breath, this is due to damage to Yuan Qi. The Small Intestine belongs to the Hand-Taiyang meridian and is Bing Fire; the Bladder belongs to the Foot-Taiyang meridian and is Ren Water. This is Ren Water overcoming Bing Fire, causing the Small Intestine to be overcome by Ren Water and move outward. All hand meridians are short, while foot meridians are long. Considering the Five Elements mutual overcoming, this involves foot meridians. This is Fire entering Water, a syndrome of extreme cold, suitable for warming treatment to cure. This differs from the cold-heat opposite syndrome mentioned in *Nan Jing*, also called Small Intestine Diarrhea or Loose Stools. Haizang (Zhang Yuansu) said: This is miscellaneous diseases where Fire enters Water, transforming into a cold syndrome. Also, external injury to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder meridian, left pulses all floating indicate exterior Yang signs. Suddenly transforming into interior cold is also Wang Fire entering Sheng Water, causing Bing Fire to submit to Ren Water and transform. The pulse reverses from floating to slightly deep. Both interior and exterior diseases have this situation, the example of Fire entering Water. Only those proficient in pulse diagnosis can know this. Use Jiang Fu Chishizhi Zhusha Dan (Ginger, Aconite, Red Clay, Cinnabar Pill).
Sheng Fuzi (Raw Prepared Aconite Lateralis Radix, half liang), Sheng Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, half liang, not soaked), Zhusha (Cinnabar, one liang, ground separately), Chishizhi (Red Kaolin, one and a half liang, water-flown).

Li Dongyuan said: Because I read Lu Shi's *Yi Jing* (Medical Mirror), I saw this prescription had the same number of ingredients and dosages, except using Fu Huo Dan Sha (Fixed Fire Cinnabar). And the treatment was effective. The conditions treated were frequent and incontinent urination, palpitations and forgetfulness, and endless nightmares, which were different. Seeing these differences and examining them carefully led to this treatment method. If ineffective and listed generally: The Classics state the Kidney governs large and small intestines; the Liver governs urinary dribbling. *Nan Jing* states: The Small Intestine is the Red Intestine; a red face and red urine/feces come from the Heart and Small Intestine. Southern Red color manifests externally. The Classics state: The Lower Jiao is like a ditch, referring precisely to large and small intestines. Large stool is Yin, has form, and is the lower part of the Lower Jiao. Kidney disease: The Kidney governs large stool but does not mention the Large Intestine, clearly indicating the son performing the father's function. Small stool is transformed by Qi, and is the upper part of the Lower Jiao. Saying the Liver governs urinary dribbling is also the son performing the father's function. Fu diseases are governed by Qi transformation; Zang diseases are governed by form/blood transformation. This discusses Bladder disease; both syndromes are in the Lower Jiao, differing in whether they involve form or Qi, and Fu or Zang. Both are due to Dantian decline. It does not mention Heart Fire because Xiang Fire executes the Jun King's order. Finely divided, Bladder Ren Water overcoming Bing Small Intestine means it does not transmit to Yin, hence bleeding stool. Bleeding stool and incontinence are form/pathology diseases, and not transmitting to Yin means Yin is not diseased. Why is it a form disease? It is the substance of Yin, the function of Fu. Heaven and Earth Yin and Yang are mutually substance and function, visible here. This clarifies that Six Fu are used by Five Zang, and Five Zang are used by Six Fu. Form diseases all transmit to Yin. Urinary incontinence is Bladder failing to constrain, leading to enuresis; this does not transmit to Yin. It is Dantian and Bao Luo (Uterus/Bladder network) receiving cold, overcome by Ren Water. Generally, all Fu contain form substances. Form diseases, when in Fu, trace their origin to Zang. Using Fu Huo Dan Sha (Fixed Fire Cinnabar) removes its cold nature. Treatments are similar because they are both in the Lower Jiao, tonifying various forms of Fire residing in the Bao Luo. Because the Bao and Kidney are opposite and connected by channels. Kidney governs large stool, Liver governs small stool, how could their governance not differ? The Classics say: Kidney and Liver share one treatment. The Classics also say: Shaoyang governs bone diseases; Bladder governs joint diseases. This can also be known. Urinary incontinence taken with Poria decoction; large stool diseases sent down with rice water. Secretions of all Zang and Fu cannot be treated uniformly. There are deficiency constipation and excess constipation. Excess constipation: able to eat, red urine, treated with Mahren Wan (Hemp Seed Pill), Qixuan Wan (Seven-Circulation Pill) etc. Stomach deficiency constipation: unable to eat, clear urine, treated with Nongpo Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction).
Nongpo (Magnolia Bark, prepared with Ginger), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, five liang), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, stir-fried with wheat bran, one liang), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, three liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, three liang), Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Fermented Paste, three liang). Make coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, 1.5 cups of water, 5 slices of Ginger, 3 Jujubes, decoct to 1 cup, take on an empty stomach.
Excess constipation is matter (accumulation); deficiency constipation is Qi.
If the pulse lacks strength, and floating seems to stop, it is insufficient Yuan Qi in the chest. Add Renshen (Ginseng), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Yizhiren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Semen), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bidoukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus). Those with weak Qi and Blood cannot take Zhike (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit) as it damages Qi. Those with abundant Qi and Blood cannot take Dingxiang (Clove) as it increases Qi excessively.
Wiry and deficient pulse: do not damage Qi. Large and excess pulse: do not tonify Qi.
Qi deficiency uses Shengmai San (Generate Pulse Powder); Qi excess uses Sancai Wan (Three Talents Pill).
Earth's dampness, when felt, harms skin, flesh, sinews, and vessels; Neituo San (Internal Support Powder) treats it, because it is externally contracted. Rich food changes produce large carbuncles on the feet; this is the excess of pungent and sweet flavors; Qisheng San (Seven Sages Powder) treats it, because it arises internally (remove Gui, add Danggui). For reducing swelling and sores, apply Qingfen (Calamina) mixed with fresh Ginger juice.
For sores with foul flesh, add a little Badou (Crotonis Fructus) and Xionghuang (Realgar) to the plaster. It does not harm healthy flesh, only removes foul flesh. Not only for foul sores, if abscesses have dead flesh that cannot be removed, apply Badoushuang (Croton Frost). Deep wounds: apply paste; shallow wounds: sprinkle dry powder. Protect externally with plaster for great effect.
Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) used raw. Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Nongpo (Magnolia Bark), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix).
