(Pill, from Liu Hejian) The formula uses Black Qian Niu (Pharbitis Seed) and Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), combined with Gan Sui (Kansui Root), Yuan Hua (Genkwa Flower), and Mu Xiang (Aucklandia Root). Qing Pi (Green Tangerine Peel), Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel), and a small amount of Qing Fen (Calomel) are added. This is quite suitable for treating Yang Water (edema due to excess-heat/toxicity) characterized by dryness and excess. [Thirst, red face, coarse breathing, constipation accompanied by swelling are termed Yang Water. Preparation: Black Qian Niu 4 liang (stir-fried), Da Huang 2 liang (soaked in wine), Gan Sui (baked in flour), Yuan Hua (stir-fried with vinegar), Da Ji (Spurge Root) (baked in flour), Qing Pi (stir-fried), Ju Hong (Red Tangerine Peel) each 1 liang, Mu Xiang 5 qian, Qing Fen 1 qian. Make pills with water. Qian Niu, Da Huang, Gan Sui, Da Ji, and Yuan Hua are harsh drugs that aggressively drain water; Mu Xiang, Qing Pi, and Chen Pi (aged tangerine peel) move Qi; a little Qing Fen penetrates the collaterals. However, this should not be administered lightly unless it is an Excess syndrome.]
(Decoction) The formula contains Bing Lang (Areca Seed) and Shang Lu (Phytolacca Root), along with Fu Ling Pi (Poria Skin), Da Fu Pi (Areca Stem Bark), and Jiao Mu (Sichuan Pepper Seed). Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean), Qiong Jiao (Qin Jiao/Gentiana Macrophylla Root), Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), and Mu Tong (Akebia Stem) are added. Decoct with Jiang Pi (Ginger Skin) and take for Yang Water. [Composition: Bing Lang, Shang Lu, Fu Ling Pi, Da Fu Pi, Jiao Mu, Chi Xiao Dou, Qin Jiao, Qiang Huo, Ze Xue, Mu Tong in equal parts, decocted with Jiang Pi and Zao (Jujube). Qin Jiao and Qiang Huo dispel dampness and ascend; Mu Tong and Ze Xie drain dampness and descend; Fu Ling Pi, Da Fu Pi, and Jiang Pi move water in the skin; Jiao Mu, Chi Xiao Dou, Shang Lu, and Bing Lang attack water in the abdomen. This also reflects the principle of dispersing water from above/below and exterior/interior.]
(Soup, from "Yan Shi"), the formula uses Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), and Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit), plus Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Mu Xiang, and Da Fu Pi. Cao Dou Kou (Grass Cardamom), Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), and Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) are added. This is effective for Yin Water (edema due to deficiency-cold) and its efficacy is praiseworthy. [Normal bowel/bladder function but no thirst, accompanied by swelling, is termed Yin Water. Composition: Fu Ling, Bai Zhu (stir-fried with soil), Mu Gua, Gan Cao, Mu Xiang, Da Fu Pi, Cao Dou Kou (baked), Fu Zi (stir-fried), Gan Jiang, Hou Po (stir-fried), decocted with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Zao. For Spleen Deficiency, tonify with Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, Gan Cao; for Spleen Cold, warm with Cao Dou Kou, Fu Zi, Gan Jiang; for Spleen Dampness, drain with Fu Ling, Da Fu Pi; for Spleen Stagnation, guide out stagnation with Hou Po, Mu Xiang. Furthermore, the insufficiency of Earth often stems from the excess of Wood. Mu Gua and Mu Xiang can soothe the Liver and drain Wood, preventing Wood from overacting on Earth, thereby harmonizing the Spleen. When the Spleen is harmonized, Earth can control Water, making the Spleen solid. The Classics state: 'When dampness prevails, the earth becomes muddy.' Solidifying Earth is precisely how one controls Water.]
