Xiong Gui Tang (Szechuan Lovage and Angelica Decoction): Treats postpartum blood stasis attacking upward, where suddenly both breasts elongate and become thin like intestines, hanging down to the lower abdomen, with unbearable pain. This condition is named "Ru Xuan" (Breast Suspension), which is a critical syndrome.
Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) and Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui) (each one jin).
Boil the above herbs in water to make a concentrated decoction, take warm frequently. Then, burn two jin of the dregs slowly to produce smoke, place it under the table in front of the patient. Instruct the patient to bend their body and lower their head, allowing the mouth, nose, and affected breasts to constantly inhale the smoke. If the breasts do not retract significantly, administer another dose. The blood stasis will dissipate, and the nipples will naturally return to normal. If they still do not recover, apply pounded Ricini Semen (Ricinus communis seed) to the Baihui point (DU20) on the top of the head. After a short while, when it retracts, wash it off immediately.
(From *Ji Yin Ci You Wai Bian*)
Zi Yi said: I have read the *Lie Nü Zhuan* (Biographies of Exemplary Women), which states: In ancient times, women during pregnancy, whether sitting, standing, sleeping, eating, seeing, hearing, speaking, or moving, all had to follow rules and regulations strictly, just like Tai Ren, whose nature was upright, sincere, and solemn, focusing only on moral conduct. When she was pregnant with King Wen of Zhou, she never neglected prenatal education, and the child born eventually became a pillar of the Zhou dynasty. Is this principle not verified? Nowadays, pregnant women do not adhere to ancient methods. Husbands should instruct their wives using the principles of prenatal education, enabling them to regulate themselves well to consolidate the root and nourish the branches. Not only will there be no risk of miscarriage, but the children born will also have handsome features and exceptional talent and capacity.
It is also said: Humans are born by inheriting Qi of Yin and Yang, and their form is formed borrowing the father's essence and the mother's blood. At the beginning of gestation, in the first month, the fetus resembles a dewdrop; in the second month, like a peach blossom; in the third month, male and female distinctions appear; in the fourth month, the physical shape is complete; in the fifth month, the five Zang organs develop; in the sixth month, the six Fu organs form; in the seventh month, the orifices open; in the eighth month, the Hun soul wanders; in the ninth month, the body turns three times; in the tenth month, the Qi is sufficient, and then birth occurs. Therefore, the ancients said: "During pregnancy, avoid sexual intercourse; offspring raised this way will rarely suffer from smallpox." This is to treat fetal development with caution. How can people today not be careful?
There are now many pediatric medical books, each with its own specialization. My collection only records matters from the moment of birth until seven days later, selecting the most essential points. They are concise yet thorough, detailed yet clear, with causes and effects explained, highlighting key aspects. These excellent methods truly serve to prevent diseases before they occur. I, Qiu Xi, am already over sixty years old (one Jiazi cycle). My ambition lies in observing Gengshen (a Daoist practice for longevity), cutting off worldly affairs, and living in a mountain temple. Previously, I published works such as *Zheng Dao* and miscellaneous geographical texts, seeking corrections from scholars everywhere. This is merely an expression of my compassionate heart towards nurturing the young.
