Huangqi Wuwei Wan (Astragalus and Schisandra Pill) tonifies deficiency and defeats pathogenic factors.
Radix Astragali (Four liang, soaked in salt water, fire-roasted), Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis (Two liang).
Grind the above into powder, use Sorghum paste as a binder to make pills, take on an empty stomach with salt wine. (This is a secret recipe for tonifying Qi. Its brilliance lies in soaking and fire-roasting Radix Astragali with salt water, and using Sorghum to make pill paste, because it can stimulate appetite; Fructus Schisandrae serves as an assistant herb, suitable only for those who are deficient and suffer from shortness of breath.)
Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Decoction to Regulate the Middle) treats insufficiency of True Yang, difficulty in digesting food, loose stools, borborygmus and abdominal pain, aversion to cold when eating, and cold limbs.
Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Radix Ginseng, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (processed), Radix Glycyrrhizae (roasted), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (processed, skin and lateral roots removed, equal parts).
Cut the herbs, add fresh Ginger, decoct in water and take orally. Each dose is four qian, adding ten slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water and take. (The key to this formula lies in understanding "Regulating the Middle". Zhang Zhongjing's original prescription was to change large pills into a decoction and take it together with the dregs; the subtlety of Lizhong lies entirely in this. It is a pity that this meaning has been lost today. If one has loose stools, one should still follow the original method.)
Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction to Establish the Middle) treats various deficiencies and insufficiencies in men and women, emaciation and lack of strength. This medicine greatly generates Qi and Blood, and tonifies Ying and Wei.
Radix Astragali (Three qian), Radix Paeoniae Alba (stir-fried, Four qian), Cortex Cinnamomi (One and a half qian), Radix Glycyrrhizae (roasted, Two qian).
Cut the herbs into small pieces, prepare as one dose, add fresh Ginger and Jujube, decoct in water, and take before meals. (Lizhong regulates cold in the Earth organ [Spleen/Stomach]; Jianzhong warms cold in the blood; Danggui Jianzhong warms Ying to move Blood; Huangqi Jianzhong warms Wei to move Blood. If called Dajianzhong, then both Qi and Blood are warmed and moved! Users must grasp this intent.)
Jiawei Huangqi Tang (Modified Astragalus Decoction) treats Yang deficiency with aversion to cold.
Radix Astragali (Two qian), Radix Ginseng, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Radix Glycyrrhizae (roasted, each One qian), Cortex Cinnamomi (Five fen).
Cut the herbs, decoct in water and take. For severe cases, add Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata.
Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Great Tonifying Decoction) is most excellent for treating Cold Lao (Chronic Deficiency Syndrome due to Cold) in women. (When internal Qi is sufficient, external Qi is abundant; when external Qi is solid, internal Qi is sufficient. This formula nourishes both inside and outside mutually. By using Cortex Cinnamomi to unblock meridians between the interior and exterior, the cold caused by Yang deficiency is released. Adding Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata also warms the interior.)
See the section on Amenorrhea and Blood Depletion for the formula.
Shenshen Suitong Yinzi (Whole Body Pain Guiding Agent) treats Women's Fatigue Lao.
Os Tigridis (Five qian), Radix Saposhnikoviae, Rhizoma Ligustici Wallichii, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Poria, Radix Glycyrrhizae (roasted), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Paeoniae Alba (stir-fried), Radix Dipsaci, Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (each Two qian).
Pound into coarse powder, add fresh Ginger and Jujube, decoct and take at any time. (The Liver governs the meridians of the whole body, and the Liver stores Blood to nourish the tendons of the whole body. Therefore, scattered pains in the whole body should be primarily treated via the Liver. The root of generating Blood lies in the Spleen, as the Spleen commands the Blood of all meridians. Fangfeng disperses Liver Qi throughout the body; Baizhi moves Yangming to the Sea of Blood; Gancao and Baizhu benefit the Central Earth to generate Blood; Danggui and Shaoyao nourish Liver Wood throughout the body; Fuzi warms the interior and unblocks obstructions; Gaoben moves upward to disperse pathogens to the vertex; Fuling drains dampness downward to reach the depths; Os Tigridis and Radix Dipsaci search out pathogens in bones and sinews to settle pain. It says it treats Fatigue Lao because fatigue often leads to constant body pain.)
Muxiang Wan (Costus Pill) treats Women's Cold Lao, irregular menstruation, Qi stagnation in Zang-Fu organs, pain in the four limbs, loss of taste in food, and gradual emaciation.
Radix Costi, Succinum, Fructus Evodiae (soaked), Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Cortex Moutan, Radix Paeoniae Rubra, Rhizoma Sparganii, Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (processed), Rhizoma Corydalis, Radix Chuanxiong (each Seven and a half qian), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (dried), Radix Ginseng, Cortex Cinnamomi (each Half liang), Radix Bupleuri, Testudo Carapax et Plastrum (vinegar-roasted, remove skirt-like edges), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (each One liang).
Grind into powder, refine honey to make pills, size of Toona seeds. Take thirty pills per dose, on an empty stomach with warm wine.
Wuji Wan (Wu-Ji Pill) treats newlywed men and women with innate deficiency-cold, seminal emission and diarrhea, loss of taste in food, failure of muscles to grow, excessive sleep but light sleep, daytime drowsiness, vivid dreams at night, aversion to cold and preference for heat, vomiting clear fluid after eating, resembling Fanwei (Rebellious Stomach). This medicine nourishes the Spleen and stimulates appetite, nourishes Qi and Blood, grows muscles, enriches essence and marrow, and warms the Dantian. (This formula tonifies and breaks Qi, tonifies and breaks Blood, warms Qi and moves Blood, unblocks Qi and nourishes Blood. It should not be taken casually unless there is true Cold Lao, Qi stagnation, Blood cold, or Blood coagulation.)
Fructus Foeniculi, Poria, Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi (stir-fried, each Three liang), Piperis Longi Fructus (Five liang), Radix Ginseng, Radix Glycyrrhizae (roasted, each One liang), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Two liang), Cinnabaris (Half liang, finely ground).
Grind into fine powder, use fresh Ginger juice to make paste for pills, size of Toona seeds. Take twenty to thirty pills per dose, on an empty stomach before meals with plain boiled water, three times a day.
Naosha Wan (Sal Ammoniac Pill) treats Women's Cold Lao, accumulations and masses in the heart and abdomen, pain in the abdomen and hypochondrium, emaciation of the four limbs, and anorexia. (This formula focuses entirely on breaking Blood and dissipating nodules. Although it is said to treat Cold Lao, it is actually for long-standing accumulations and masses in the heart and abdomen leading to emaciation. Generally, the disease root lies in Cold, leading to emaciation, hence the name. However, if it is not a confirmed true cold syndrome, how dare one use it casually?)
Testudo Carapax et Plastrum (vinegar-roasted), Semen Persicae (skin and tip removed, bran-roasted), Radix Costi, Resina Tardigradi (stir-fried), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (each One liang), Sal Ammoniac (Two liang, boiled with one Sheng of vinegar into a paste).
Grind into fine powder, use Sal Ammoniac paste to make pills, size of Toona seeds. Take twenty pills per dose, on an empty stomach with warm wine. (This formula contains too much Sal Ammoniac and should not be used lightly.)
