(The treatment principles for Warm Epidemic are the same. Summer-heat and latent summer-heat should follow this method.)
When Damp-Warmth lingers for a long time, it causes diffuse obstruction in the San Jiao (Triple Burner), leading to coma with blocked orifices, hardness and fullness in the lower abdomen, and constipation. This is due to dampness stagnating in the Qi aspect of the Lower Jiao. Xuan Qing Dao Zhuo Tang (Decoction to Clear Purity and Guide Out Turbidity) is the primary prescription.
Xuan Qing Dao Zhuo Tang (Decoction to Clear Purity and Guide Out Turbidity)
Zhu Ling (Polyporus, 2.5 qian) Fu Ling (Poria, 2.5 qian) Han Shui Shi (Calcitum, 3 qian) Wan Can Sha (Mulberry Leaf Silkworm Frass, 2 qian) Zao Jia Zi (Gleditsiae Sinensis Seed, 1.5 qian, peeled)
Decoct in water and take orally.
If dampness coagulates and obstructs Qi, causing complete closure of the San Jiao (Triple Burner) with both urinary and fecal retention, it indicates that the True Yang of the Kidney is constrained by dampness. Ban Liu Wan (Half-Sulfur Pill) is the primary prescription.
Ban Liu Wan (Half-Sulfur Pill)
Shi Liu Huang (Stibnite, processed) Zhi Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, prepared)
Grind the above two ingredients into fine powder in equal parts. Form pills using steamed wheat cake dough, sized like wu-tou seeds. Take 1-2 qian per dose, washed down with plain boiling water.
In Damp-Warmth disease, if body heat persists without resolution, accompanied by thirst and dry tongue, followed suddenly by spasms or twitching of hands and feet, this indicates exhaustion of Jin-Ye (Body Fluids) and stagnation of pathogenic factors, with Wind-Fire rising from the Jue Yin (Liver/Pericardium). Ling Yang Jiao Tang (Antelope Horn Decoction) is the primary prescription. (If accompanied by constipation, a deep and forceful pulse, and a yellow tongue coating with prickles, remove Mu Li (Oyster Shell) from this formula and slowly purge using Jiu Jun Wan (Wine-Processed Rhubarb Pill).)
Ling Yang Jiao Tang (Antelope Horn Decoction)
Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Antelope Horn, 1.5 qian) Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus, 3 qian) Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, 1.5 qian) Xian Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 3 qian) Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha, raw, 3 qian) Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fried, 3 qian) Sheng Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, raw, 2 qian) Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 1.5 qian) Sang Ye (Mori Folium, 1.5 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally.
For Damp-Warmth or latent summer-heat causing hypochondriac pain, with or without cough, or only fever without chills, or alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, this is caused by dampness accumulating into Zhi Yin (Fluid Retention in the Hypochondrium) hanging below the ribs. Do not mistakenly diagnose this as Chai Hu Syndrome. Xiang Fu Xuan Fu Hua Tang (Cyperi Rhizoma and Inulae Flos Decoction) is the primary prescription.
Xiang Fu Xuan Fu Hua Tang (Cyperi Rhizoma and Inulae Flos Decoction)
Sheng Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma, 1.5 qian) Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos, wrapped in silk, 1.5 qian) Su Zi Fang (Perillae Fructus Frost, 1.5 qian) Guang Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 2.5 qian) Fu Ling (Poria, 1.5 qian) Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen, 2.5 qian) Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 2 qian)
Decoct in water and take warm. If abdominal fullness is present, add Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex); if pain is severe, add Jiang Xiang Mo (Dipterocarpi Resina powder).
When Summer-heat pathogen penetrates deeply into the Shao Yin (Heart/Kidney) causing Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst), it is due to excessive Heart Fire depleting Kidney fluids. When it penetrates deeply into the Jue Yin (Liver) causing numbness, it is due to Heat damaging Yin and failing to nourish the sinews. Both conditions are treated with Lian Mei Tang (Coptis and Mume Decoction). If Heart heat, irritability, and mental confusion are severe, first administer Zi Xue Dan (Purple Snow Elixir), then take Lian Mei Tang.
Lian Mei Tang (Coptis and Mume Decoction)
Wu Mei (Mume Fructus, pitted, 1.5 qian) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 qian) Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, with heart, 1.5 qian) Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 1.5 qian) E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla, 1 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. If the pulse is empty, large, and Kou (bamboo-slip shaped), add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix).
When Summer-heat pathogen penetrates deeply into the Jue Yin (Liver), presenting with gray tongue, wasting-thirst, board-like hardness in the epigastrium, vomiting, nausea, expulsion of roundworms, alternating chills and fever, bloody watery diarrhea, inability to speak, and upper-lower rejection, this is a critical condition of Earth failure and Wood overacting, where healthy Qi is deficient and Pathogenic Factors are rampant. Jiao Mei Tang (Sichuan Pepper and Mume Decoction) is the primary prescription.
Jiao Mei Tang (Sichuan Pepper and Mume Decoction) (This formula uses both cold and hot herbs, aiming to support Healthy Qi and expel Pathogens; it is derived from Zhang Zhongjing's Wu Mei Wan.)
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 qian) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 qian) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 qian) Sheng Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, raw, 1.5 qian) Chuan Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, stir-fried until black, 1.5 qian) Wu Mei (Mume Fructus, pitted, 1.5 qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 qian) Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 0.8 qian) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally.
If Summer-heat is mistreated, damaging the Stomach Qi, spreading to the Middle and Lower Jiao, causing Qi blockage filling the chest, agitation, and thirst, this is a critical condition of internal pathogenic knotting and mixing of Clear and Turbid Qi. Lai Fu Dan (Restoring Harmony Elixir) is the primary prescription.
Lai Fu Dan (Restoring Harmony Elixir)
Tai Yin Xuan Jing Shi (Nephrite, 1 liang) Bo Shang Liu Huang (Imported Sulfur, 1 liang) Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, 2 qian) Xiao Shi (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang, ground with sulfur and stir-fried on low heat until granular) Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, white part removed, 2 qian) Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces, clarified to remove sand and stir-fried until smoke ceases, 2 qian)
Grind into fine powder. Form pills using vinegar paste, sized like wu-tou seeds. Take 10-20 pills per dose, washed down with rice drink.
When Summer-heat causes prolonged fever, restless sleep, lack of taste in food, and unclear consciousness, it indicates damage to both Yin fluids and Yuan Qi (Original Qi). San Cai Tang (Three Capabilities Decoction) is the primary prescription.
San Cai Tang (Three Capabilities Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 2 qian) Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix, 1.5 qian) Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 3.5 qian)

Blood stasis caused by Summer-Warmth, and the syndrome of Heat entering the Blood Chamber, are treated according to the same methods as Warm-Thermal diseases. See details in the Upper Volume, Wind-Warmth Lower Jiao Chapter.
