Among the six Qi divided into six categories, only the category of Cold-Water strictly requires diaphoresis (sweating-inducing therapy). For Taiyang cold damage characterized by a tight pulse and absence of sweating, Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is the standard prescription; for Wind-Cold complicated by phlegm-fluid retention, Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue-Green Dragon Decoction) or Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue-Green Dragon Decoction) are used. "Fluid" (Yin) refers to Cold-Water; when fluid retention causes anhidrosis, formulas such as Ma Huang Gan Cao Tang (Ephedra and Licorice Decoction) or Fu Zi Ma Huang Tang (Aconite and Ephedra Decoction) are employed. "Water" also refers to Cold-Water; if sweating is present, formulas that protect Yang Qi are administered. The Dampness category also contains provisions for diaphoresis, which apply when accompanied by Cold; however, cases not accompanied by Cold but presenting with spontaneous sweating mostly utilize formulas to protect Yang Qi. Other contraindications for diaphoresis include Wind-Warmth, Summer-Heat, blood loss, and chronic sores (Chuang Jia), as previously discussed. Generally, injury by Cold pathogen enters the Taiyang channel; Cold pathogen and Cold-Water belong to the same family, and like attracts like. Why must it not fail to induce sweating? Taiyang's root is Cold and its branch is Heat. When Cold pathogen internally combines with Cold-Water Qi, only the root nature of Cold-Water remains without the branch Heat of Yang, thus ceasing to be Taiyang. Water overcomes Fire, akin to one Yang trapped within two Yin lines; therefore, pungent-warm diaphoretic herbs must urgently be used to lift Yang outward. To lift Yang, how can one avoid using pungent-warm substances! If Warmth or Summer-Heat injures the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, this represents Fire overcoming Metal. Taiyin's root is Dryness and its branch is Dampness. If pungent-warm herbs are used again, they externally assist the Fire of Warmth/Summer-Heat and internally aggravate the Dryness of the Zang organ. The combination of two Drynesses renders the Qi transformation of Earth impossible, causing it to cease being Taiyin; with the depletion of body fluids, what else awaits but convulsions! Thus, initially use pungent-cool herbs to rescue the dryness of the primary Zang and externally dissipate the heat of Warmth/Summer-Heat; subsequently use sweet-moistening herbs to internally rescue the dampness of the primary Zang and externally resist the Fire of Warmth/Summer-Heat, thereby preserving the original state of Zang-Xiang Qi transformation. This applies to Warmth/Summer-Heat cases originating from the Cold category. Cases accompanied by Wind with spontaneous sweating are strictly prohibited from diaphoresis, meaning "those with sweating must not use Ma Huang." Regrettably, modern practitioners substitute Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) for Ma Huang, unaware that Qiang Huo is even more potent than Ma Huang. Ma Huang induces sweating through its hollow structure and permeability, its green color indicating dispersing properties, and its growth in inland regions; removing the nodes facilitates sweating, while retaining them allows both dispersion and retention, and its aroma is mild. In contrast, Qiang Huo is a type of Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) grown in Qiang lands, possessing a fierce and overpowering aroma. Boil one liang of Ma Huang in a room; two or three people sitting nearby will suffer no distress. Boil one liang of Qiang Huo in a room; two or three people sitting nearby will find the released aroma unbearable, especially the weak. The use of Qiang Huo, Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) in Warmth/Summer-Heat treatments, and Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Ze Lan (Leonuri Herba), and Pao Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) in postpartum blood-loss patients, are all sharp swords of death; those with conscience should deliberate carefully.
