(Abridged from the Wuben volume, corrected with reference to the Shide Tang edition and Hu's edition)
Since childhood, I have had a profound passion for Materia Medica. I investigated the properties and flavors of herbs, analyzed the geographical conditions of their origins, and observed the circulation patterns of medicinal materials. After years of dedicated study, integrating the various characteristics of vegetables and plants in Yunnan, I composed two volumes of *Yimen Lanyao* (Essentials for the Medical Gate) to pass down to future generations.
Future students must never be so greedy for great profit that they extinguish their desire to save lives. All practitioners should contemplate and understand through pulse diagnosis, ensuring that responses are as immediate as an echo. Exercise utmost caution!
Written and recorded by Lan Mao (Zhi'an), a native of Yanglin, Southern Yunnan.
(Abridged from the Yu volume)
Medicinal materials produced in Yunnan have long been renowned far and wide. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) records "Qingmuxiang from Yongchang Commandery." Chang Qu's *Huayang Guozhi* (Records of States South of Mount Hua) from the Jin Dynasty, and Fan Chuo's *Man Shu* (Record of Barbarians) from the Tang Dynasty, separately describe medicinal products from Wumeng and Lijiang. The Song Dynasty's *Zhenghe Bencao* also frequently cites Yunnan literature, facts well known to all.
The extant work of Zhi'an, *Dunnan Bencao*, has been copied and printed, becoming household knowledge. Its compilation predates Li Shizhen's *Bencao Gangmu* (Compendium of Materia Medica).
This copy was obtained from Zhang Qushan of Yiliang. There is a colophon by the scribe before the book, indicating it is likely a manuscript copied in the 14th year of the Kangxi reign, exactly two hundred years ago. Although there are occasional signs of insect damage, the paper and ink remain fresh. The scribe further annotated: "It is also named *Zhu Lan Bencao*, which is incorrect! *Zhu Lan Bencao* was originally compiled by Mu Zhongjie and was never published."
(Note: The original text appears to contain a transcription error or missing segment here. Based on context, the meaning implies: One must verify the botanical identity, carefully distinguish authenticity, or undergo practical testing before transmitting the knowledge for treating diseases.)
Colophon written by Huaiqing in Xijin during the summer of the Yi Hai year, the first year of the Guangxu reign.
(Abridged from the Qin volume)
Mr. Lan Zhi'an of Yanglin authored *Dunnan Bencao*, which exists in multiple circulating versions. This booklet is a manuscript copy from the Qinyanzhai collection of Mr. Hua Yunsan. Compared with commercial printed editions, its details and brevity differ, making it valuable for comparative verification.
Mr. Zhi'an's ancestral home was in Zhongzhou (Henan), with deep historical roots; *Bencao* frequently mentions Henan locations, stating "Liang medicine is produced in Weihui"; it also records herb-gathering sites such as "Hongshan."
Preface written by Fang Shumei (Xianfu), a junior scholar from Jinning, in the seventh month of the Jiachen year of the Guangxu reign.
