[Li] When using Kaolin (Bai'e), do not select those with a bluish color and white base. Pound and sieve into powder, wash with saline solution (water flotation method), dry in the sun, and use. This prevents intestinal stagnation and astringency. For every two liang of Kaolin, use one fen of salt. [Meng Shen] Calcine before use for medicinal purposes; do not use in decoctions.
[Li] For Dust from Roof Beams (Liangshangchen), it must be collected from high halls and temples far away from smoke and fire sources. Brush it down, sieve to obtain fine powder, and use. [Li Shizhen] For Inverted Hanging Dust (Daogua Chen), burn until no smoke remains, sieve the powder, and add to medicine. What Lei Xiaochu described seems to be ordinary dust from roof beams; people nowadays do not use it.
[Tao Hongjing] It is used in the medical formula Zhenxin Wan (Calming Heart Pill); it should not be taken directly. When made into flakes, it should be ground with Mercury (Shuiyin) until dissolved. [Su Gong] Formulary practitioners use Silver Flakes (Yinxie) by taking ready-made silver foil, reacting it with Mercury and Saltpeter to form a paste, then adding more Saltpeter and Salt, grinding into powder, burning off the Mercury, washing away the Salt and Saltpeter, to obtain extremely fine powder. This method yields better results than merely grinding silver into flakes. [Li Shizhen] For medicinal use, only silver foil is easy to grind finely. If processed with Mercury, Salt, and Saltpeter, it becomes toxic. The *Longmu Lun* calls this "Silver Liquid" (Yinye). Tin foil may be used as a counterfeit; distinction is necessary.
[Li Shizhen] This refers to Copper Scrap (Tongxia) falling during copper beating. Alternatively, red copper heated by fire and quenched in water will also naturally shed flakes. Wash clean with water, stir-fry in a clay pot with good wine until sparks appear, take out, grind into powder, and use.
[Li] Collect Stone Marrow Lead (Shisuiqian), crush by hammering, boil in Licorice Decoction (Gancao Tang) for one shichen (approx. 2 hours). Strain out the next day, spread to dry, pound in a mortar, sieve again, and calcine once.
[Li Shizhen] For use, melt in an iron ladle, pour onto tiles, filter out dregs, and repeat this process several times to collect. Black Tin Ash (Heixihui) is obtained from lead sand to yield black ash. White Tin Ash (Baixihui) is not used in medicine.
[Su Song] Lead Frost (Qianshuang) is made by alloying Lead with one-fifteenth part Mercury into sheets, placing them in a vinegar jar, sealing tightly, and leaving for a long time until frost forms. [Li Shizhen] To make it into frost... (Text appears incomplete or corrupted here).
[Li] When using, pound finely, place in a porcelain pot, cover with multiple layers of paper bags containing powder from worm-eaten willow branches, bake dry, then fill with East-flowing Water (Dongliushui), boil over fire for one shichen. Remove the willow powder and paper bags, and use the liquid/residue.
