All versions lack the character "Pian" (Chapter). The *Jia Yi Jing* names it "Da Lun Pian on Wind and Evil Qi of Four Seasons."
Question: Why do Zefeng Xieqi (pathogenic factors from irregular winds) cause disease? Zhang Yun's commentary: The term "Zei" (Thief/Bandit) refers to harm. All abnormal climatic conditions that do not conform to the four seasons are called Zefeng Xieqi. See the "Sui Lu Pian" for details. The term "Shixue" (Cave dwelling) refers to the fact that ancient people often lived in caves. It is not that they did not avoid wind and evil qi, but rather, even if one avoids wind and evil qi, some still fall ill. Why is this? *Zhang Shi Yi Tong* records: Regarding the condition known as Gout (Tongfeng), *Ling Shu* calls it Zefeng, *Su Wen* calls it Bi (Obstruction Syndrome), and *Jin Gui Yao Lue* names it Lijie (Migratory Joint Pain), later renamed Baihu Lijie (White Tiger Migratory Joint Pain). This is mostly caused by wind-cold-dampness invading the meridians when the body is deficient, leading to stagnation of blood and qi. In recent times, heretical theories have prevailed, calling this condition Jianfeng (Arrow Wind). If wind-toxin causes swelling and ulceration, it is called Jiandai (Arrow Quiver). All decoctions are forbidden, while moxibustion, hot compresses, and needle pricking are practiced indiscriminately. Although this follows the method for commoners in *Ling Shu*, the formulas for herbal hot compresses are completely lost in the world. Thus, muscles already diseased suffer innocent pain again. How can people be so ignorant, willingly falling for such confusion? It is truly lamentable.
These are all cases where [pathogens] were previously (stop) blocked and not circulating freely. Zhang Yun's commentary: All these five situations are similar to what is described below as Gu Xie (latent pathogenic factors).
When the pores open (stop) it becomes Hanbi (Cold Bi Syndrome). *Jia Yi Jing* lacks the characters "Qi Kai". The character "Yu" appears above "Shang". Ma Shi's commentary: When the couli (pores/skin texture) open, and one encounters wind-cold, then blood and qi coagulate. This interacts with latent pathogens like dampness and bad blood. (Like the military ambush of the State of Qi attacking the State of Ju in the Spring and Autumn period) resulting in Hanbi. This corresponds to what *Bi Lun* calls Tongbi (Painful Bi), which occurs when cold qi prevails. Zhang Yun's commentary: "Qi Kai" means being exposed to wind and cold. The Gu Xie is present first, followed by wind-cold. When these two meet, blood and qi coagulate, thus forming Hanbi. Brief Note: Based on *Jia Yi Jing*, Ma Shi's annotation is correct.
If there is heat (stop) it may arise from an addition. Zhang Yun's commentary: If one contracts wind after sweating due to heat, although it may not be Zefeng Xieqi, it is still an external contraction. There must be cases where the disease arises from an "addition," meaning adding a new factor to an old condition. New and old pathogens combine, causing the disease to manifest.
Here too there are Gu Xie (stop) hence it seems like ghosts and spirits. *Jia Yi Jing*: "Bo" is written as "Bo" (approach). Ma Shi's commentary: People have latent pathogens like dampness and bad blood remaining without manifesting. Because the patient is unaware of them, an accidental trigger occurs. Whether through pleasant or unpleasant emotions, internal blood and qi become chaotic. The Gu Xie contends with the new emotional state, leading to illness. The origin of this disease is very subtle, beyond the reach of ordinary observation and hearing. Therefore, people do not know the cause and suspect ghosts and spirits, appearing like them but not actually being them. Zhang Zhicong's commentary: This is a disease of Qi rather than Form, so it cannot be seen or heard, resembling ghosts and spirits.
Those who can be cured by Zhu You (stop) can be cured by Zhu You. *Jia Yi Jing*: Adds "You" after "Zhu". Adds "Bai" before "Bing". Zhang Yun's commentary: Zhu belongs to witchcraft incantations, i.e., Zhu You therapy. "Sheng" refers to the principle of overcoming; for all diseases governed by the Five Elements, there is always something that overcomes them. However, one must first know the origin of the disease, then use the overcoming method to treat it, thereby shifting spirit and changing qi to dispel evil. Some diseases are beyond the reach of herbs and needles, requiring this method alone. Only ancient shamans knew this, so it can be cured by Zhu You.
However, the subtlety of the ancient shamans using Zhu You lies not in the incantation itself, but in the mechanism of overcoming. Wang Hongyi said: In ancient times, there were thirteen departments, and Zhu You was one of them. "Xian Wu" refers to doctors in ancient times who could cure diseases through Zhu You, called Wu Yi (Shaman Doctors). Hence, the ancient character for "Yi" (Doctor) contains the radical "Wu" (Shaman), not comparing them to lowly servant shamans. A southern saying goes: "One without constancy cannot practice Shaman Medicine." This refers to the doctors of ancient times who used Zhu You to cure diseases, indicating that medicine and shamanism were not two separate things. Brief Note: The classification into thirteen departments began in the Yuan Dynasty; claiming it existed in ancient times is incorrect.
Jie An (Editor's Note): Wu Jutong stated: According to *Su Wen*, "Zhu" means to inform/tell, and "You" means the source/origin of the disease. Recently, families practicing witchcraft have been listed as the Zhu You Department among the thirteen departments. *Nei Jing* states that those who believe in witches and not in doctors shall not be treated. How can witchcraft be listed within medical departments? I believe that whenever treating internal injuries, one must first use Zhu You to detail the origin of the disease to the patient, making them aware so they dare not repeat the mistake. One must also carefully empathize with the social realities reflected in the "Bian Feng" and "Bian Ya" poems of the *Shi Jing*, gently observe the hidden feelings of laborers and longing women, guide them with gentle words, shock them with solemn words, and alarm them with dire warnings. Only when they are sincerely convinced and satisfied can the treatment achieve miraculous effects.
