The sages discussed cough, stating that sound alone is "ke" (cough), phlegm alone is "sou" (expectoration), and both sound and phlegm together constitute "késou" (cough with expectoration). The initial onset is often due to Wind-Cold pathogenic factors, while prolonged duration often results in Deficiency and Damage syndromes. If the cough is severe enough to induce vomiting, moxa should be applied to Shenzhu (GV12). For cough caused by phlegm, moxa should be applied to Zusanli (ST36). For shortness of breath, reverse flow of Qi causing cough, where Qi sensation rises from the left side and anger is easily provoked, moxa should be applied to Ganshu (BL18). For coughing up blood, moxa should be applied to Feishu (BL13) or Xingjian (LR2). For expectorating pus, moxa should be applied to Qimen (LR14). For chronic conditions developing into consumption (Lao), moxa should be applied to Gaohuang (BL43) without error.

There are four causes for Asthma (Chuan Bing): one is asthma due to Cold-Evil invading the Lungs; another is asthma due to pathological obstruction of Lung Qi; a third is asthma due to Water retention under the Heart; and the fourth is asthma due to the Kidneys failing to grasp Qi. Generally, it is advisable to first apply moxa to Tiantu (CV22), then to Zhongwan (CV12), and in severe cases, additionally to Feishu (BL13). For all cases of Asthma where the patient cannot lie flat, Lingtai (GV10) must be moxibusted. For those who experience rapid panting upon movement, Qihai (CV6) must be moxibusted. By accurately applying moxa to these acupoints, removing deep-seated pathogens is as easy as pulling a thorn from the ear.

Texts state: Hematemesis reaching sheng or dou volumes belongs to Stomach Blood; other forms of hemoptysis belong to the Heart; vomiting blood belongs to the Liver; coughing blood belongs to the Lungs; and spitting blood belongs to the Kidneys. For any general Blood Disorder, one should generally first apply moxa to Danshu (BL19). For bloody phlegm, apply moxa to Shangwan (CV13). For hemoptysis with sound in the throat, apply moxa to Tiantu (CV22). In cases of Five Wastes and Seven Injuries, involving various deficiencies and damages leading to bleeding, apply moxa to Gaohuang (BL43); this should not be delayed. According to my personal insight, acute onset of Blood Disorders is mostly due to Excess Fire and should not be treated with moxa arbitrarily; however, chronic or recurrent Blood Disorders often involve Deficient Fire, and using moxa is permissible. Careful differentiation is essential.
