The Materia Medica clearly states the Eighteen Incompatibilities, let me explain them one by one: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao) and Glehniae Radix (Shashen), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Adenophorae Radix (Xuanshen) together with Bupleuri Radix (Zishen), Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen) and Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Danshen); upon encountering Veratrum nigrum (Lilu), they kill people; Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji), Trichosanthes Kirilowii Radix (Bailian) together with Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Trichosanthis Radix (Gualou), and Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Beimu), these five must not meet Aconiti Radix (Wutou) and Aconiti Radix Lateralis (Wuhui); meeting them causes an incompatibility reaction as swift as divine power; Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Daji), Daphne Genkwa Flower (Yuanhua) together with Sargassum (Haizao) and Kansui Radix (Gansui), above contradict Licorice Root (Gancao); if used for vomiting poisons causing intestinal turning, violating this normally leads to bad outcomes; Beeswax (Mila) must not be seen with Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Cong); Haliotidis Shell (Shijueming) must not see Cloudstone (Yunmu); Veratrum nigrum (Lilu) must not be soaked in Wine; if humans violate these, it results in bitterness and suffering.
Zhang Zihe said: After swelling diseases have subsided, one should regulate diet, avoid salt, blood products, and sexual intercourse; those who violate prohibitions will have their illness recur and die without remedy. For tuberculosis cough, avoid sexual intercourse and rich/greasy food; violators die. After cold damage (Shanghan), avoid meat and sexual intercourse; violators cannot be saved. After edema, avoid salt and oil. For spleen and stomach injuries, regulate diet. After slippery diarrhea, avoid greasy food; these several prohibitions must absolutely not be lightly violated. If garlic is eaten shortly after recovery from acute disease, the illness will flare up causing great distress. If dog or mutton is eaten shortly after recovery from acute disease, bone-steaming fever will occur. If raw dates and mutton are eaten shortly after recovery from acute disease, heat steaming in the diaphragm area will occur. If raw vegetables are eaten shortly after recovery from acute disease, complexion will never recover permanently. If alcohol and leeks are consumed shortly after recovery from illness, the disease will definitely recur.
