The "Fa Ming" (Explanation) states: Whenever such pills are used, it is because wind has entered the bone marrow and cannot be expelled. Therefore, drugs such as Long Nao, She Xiang, Niu Huang, Xiong Huang, Xi Jiao, Hu Po, Zhen Zhu (Pearl), and Jin Bo, which can penetrate the bone marrow and reach the skin and muscles, are used to allow the wind pathogen to exit from the exterior. If the disease involves the blood vessels or the fu-organs, Long Nao, She Xiang, and Niu Huang should not be used initially, as they may draw the wind pathogen deeper into the bone marrow, making it impossible to extract, like oil mixing with flour. However, if the disease involves the zang-organs accompanied by phlegm-saliva, coma, dizziness, and irritability and heat, these pills are suitable for resolving phlegm, suppressing rebellion, and clearing the spirit.
