曰天生复脉汤。若湿热痰火内盛者服之。则喻氏所谓翻受胃变。从而化热矣。凡药皆当量人
之体气而施。岂可拘乎一定之寒热邪。子循之体。水虚而火旺者也。蔗性不能敌。反从其气
而化热。正如蔗经火炼则成糖。全失清凉之本气矣。枸杞子亦然。（水虚火旺方。元参片一

清气分则气机通畅有权，痰液得以吐出。痰液吐出后，积存的郁热便随痰而去。肺气日益达到清肃的状态，疼痛便可痊愈。（方药：生石膏先煎一两六钱，酒炒知母四钱，鲜竹叶二钱，姜竹茹三钱，整荸荠捣碎一两，淡海浮石先煎二两，济银花八钱，绿豆皮四钱。）
赵子循每次吃甘蔗就会流鼻血。有人怀疑甘蔗是大热性质的。孟英说：“甘蔗味甘而性凉，但甘味过重，生津的力量有余，而凉性很微弱，清热泻火的功效不足。对于津液虚亏、热势不炽盛的人，最为适宜。它是风温证中救阴液的良药，我称它为‘天生复脉汤’。如果是湿热、痰火内盛的人服用它，就会像喻嘉言所说的那样，导致胃气受损，进而化热。凡是用药都应当根据人的体质气机来施治，怎么能拘泥于固定的寒热属性呢？赵子循的体质，是肾水亏虚而心火旺盛的。甘蔗的性质不能对抗他的病机，反而顺从他的体质之气化为热邪。正如甘蔗经过火炼就变成糖，完全失去了清凉的本性一样。枸杞子的情况也是如此。（治疗水虚火旺的方剂：玄参片一两，明天冬切八钱，菟丝饼四钱，女贞子捣碎五钱，地骨皮四钱，酒炒知母四钱，酒炒川黄柏一钱半，茺蔚子捣碎先煎四钱，焦栀子皮一钱半，酒炒枇杷叶刷包一片。）
李华甫的继室怀孕三个月时发生流产（崩漏）。孟英诊察其脉象，弦、洪且数。给予大剂量的生地、银花、茅根、柏叶、青蒿、白薇、黄芩、续断、驴皮胶、藕节、胎发灰、海螵蛸等药物，病情得以安定。无奈患者不能安心静养，过了几天，胎儿堕落后再次出现崩漏。孟英在原方中去掉后六种药物，加入犀角、竹茹、玄参进行治疗。有人说，妊娠期间宜用凉药，产后则不然。于是聘请专科医生治疗，全都使用温补药物，并且坚持认为暴崩应当进补。服药几剂后，虚损的症状日益明显，时时出汗，头晕目眩，害怕听到人声，懒言少语，气息微弱，不吃不睡，偶尔有呃逆，崩漏仍然不止。再次邀请孟英诊治。孟英说：“这是死守书本知识来治疗活生生的疾病啊。血液因为热邪而崩漏，胎儿因为崩漏而堕落，难道胎儿堕落后，热邪就转化为寒邪了吗？人参、白术、干姜、肉桂、棕榈灰、五味子这类药物，属于温补酸涩之品，既助长了热邪，使血液更加奔流失控，又阻滞了气机，导致津液暗中消耗，从而出现了上述各种症状。也许你们不知道脉象，难道看不见舌苔黄黑干燥吗？”于是给予犀角、石膏、玄参、知母、花粉、竹沥、麦冬、银花、栀子、石斛、旋覆花、青蒿、白薇等大剂量药物投服。神志气息逐渐清醒，十天后，各种病症才平息。随后去掉犀角，加入生地黄，服用两个月后完全痊愈。（脉象弦洪而数，病在血分，阴虚挟热。大生地八钱，济银花一两五钱，鲜茅根五钱，酒炒柏叶一钱，鲜青蒿后下二钱，香白薇三钱，酒炒枯芩一钱半，川续断一钱半，清阿胶炖化兑服二钱，干藕节四钱，胎发灰包煎先入一钱，醋炙海螵蛸捣碎先煎三钱。后来在原方中去掉后六种药物，加入镑犀角先煎四钱，姜竹茹三钱，以清气行瘀；玄参片泡冲去渣一两，以救阴液熄风。舌苔黄黑干燥，病在气分，阴虚挟热。前后证候不同，所以方药也不同。镑犀角四钱，生石膏一两六钱，这两味药同先煎四钟，玄参片一两泡冲去渣，酒炒知母四钱，南花粉四钱，姜竹沥一大酒杯冲服，花麦冬四钱，济银花一两五钱，石斛先煎一两，旋覆花包煎先入三钱，鲜青蒿一钱半，香白薇三钱。随后去掉犀角，加大生地八钱。）
When the Qi of the clear aspect is purified, the Qi mechanism gains authority and phlegm can be expectorated. Once phlegm is expectorated, accumulated heat departs with it. The Lung Qi gradually reaches a state of clarity and肃ness (descending and purifying), and the pain can be healed. Zhao Zixun invariably suffered from epistaxis (nosebleed) after consuming sugarcane. Some suspected that sugarcane possessed a strongly hot nature. Mengying stated: "Sugarcane is sweet and cool. However, its sweetness is too heavy; while its ability to generate fluids is sufficient, its cooling property is very slight, and its efficacy in dissipating heat is inadequate. It is most suitable for those with fluid deficiency and mild heat. It is an excellent medicine for rescuing fluids in Wind-Warmth syndromes. I name it 'Naturally Born Fumai Tang' (Recovering Pulse Decoction). If taken by those with abundant damp-heat or phlegm-fire internally, it will cause what Yu Jia Yan described as 'stomach transformation,' leading to the generation of heat. All medicines should be administered according to the patient's constitution and Qi dynamics; how can one rigidly adhere to fixed concepts of cold and heat?" Zhao Zixun's constitution was characterized by water deficiency and fire hyperactivity. The nature of sugarcane could not counteract this, but rather transformed into heat following his pathological Qi. Just as sugarcane becomes sugar when refined by fire, completely losing its original cooling nature, so too does Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus) behave similarly. Li Huafu's second wife suffered a miscarriage (abortion with bleeding) at three months of gestation. Mengying palpated her pulse, finding it wiry, surging, and rapid. He prescribed a large dose of Dadihuang [Rehmanniae Radix], Yinhua [Lonicerae Japonicae Flos], Maogen [Imperatae Rhizoma], Baiye [Menthae Haplocalycis Folium], Qinghao [Artemisiae Annuae Herba], Baiwei [Cynanchi Atrati Radix], Huangqin [Scutellariae Radix], Xuduan [Dipsaci Radix], Lvpijiao [Colla Corii Asini], Oujie [Nelumbinis Plumulae Pedunculus], Taifa Hui [Capilli Humani Carbonis], and Haipiaoxiao [Sepiae Endoconcha]. Does heat transform into cold after the fetus is expelled? Herbs such as Renshen [Ginseng Radix], Baizhu [Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma], Jianggan [Zingiberis Rhizoma], Rougui [Cinnamomi Cortex], Zonghui [Livistonae Frondis Carbonis], and Wuweizi [Schisandrae Fructus] are warming, tonifying, astringent, and sour. They not only exacerbate heat, causing blood to rush uncontrollably, but also obstruct Qi, leading to latent consumption of fluids, thereby producing the aforementioned symptoms. You may ignore the pulse, but do you not see the yellow, black, and dry tongue coating?" Therefore, he prescribed a large dose of Xijiao [Rhinocerotis Cornu], Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum], Xuanshen [Scrophulariae Radix], Zhimu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma], Huafen [Puerariae Radix], Zhuli [Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam juice], Maidong [Ophiopogonis Tuber], Yinhua [Lonicerae Japonicae Flos], Zhizi [Gardeniae Fructus], Shihu [Dendrobii Caulis], Xuanfu [Inulae Flos], Qinghao [Artemisiae Annuae Herba], and Baiwei [Cynanchi Atrati Radix]. Gradually, the spirit and Qi cleared. Ten days later, all ailments subsided. Subsequently, Xijiao was removed, and Shengdihuang [Rehmanniae Radix Recens] was added.
