The Sun Taiyang (Foot Bladder and Hand Small Intestine) channel uses Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) as the guiding herb for the upper part, and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) for the lower part. The Shao Yin (Foot Kidney and Hand Heart) channel uses Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) for the upper part, and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) for the lower part. The Shao Yang (Foot Gallbladder and Hand Sanjiao) channel uses Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) for the upper part, and Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) for the lower part. The Jue Yin (Foot Liver and Hand Pericardium) channel uses Qingpi for the upper part, and Chaihu for the lower part. The Yang Ming (Foot Stomach and Hand Large Intestine) channel uses Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) for the upper part, and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) for the lower part.
Huanglian clears and drains Heart Fire. Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) clear and drain Lung Fire. Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) clears and drains Spleen Fire. Chaihu and Huanglian clear and drain Liver and Gallbladder Fire. Zhimu clears and drains Kidney Fire. Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) clears and drains Small Intestine Fire. Huangqin clears and drains Large Intestine Fire. Chaihu and Huangqin clear and drain Sanjiao Fire. Huangbai clears and drains Bladder Fire.
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) is incompatible with Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos), Gansui (Kansui Radix), and Haizao (Sargassum). Wutou (Aconiti Radix) is incompatible with Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Bailian (Liriopes Bulbus), and Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma). Lilu (Veratri Rhizoma) is incompatible with Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Shaoyao, Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Shashen (Glehniae Radix), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), and Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix).
There are eighteen incompatibilities in Materia Medica: "Banxia, Gualou, Beimu, Bailian, and Baiji attack Wutou; Zaocys, Daji, Gansui, and Yuanhua all war against Gancao; various Shen, Xixin, and Shaoyao rebel against Lilu."
Liuhuang (Sulfur) is originally the essence of fire, but it conflicts immediately upon meeting Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas). Shuiyin (Mercurius) must never meet Pishuang (Arsenici Trioxidum); Yelangdu (Daphnes Genkwei Cortex) fears Mituoseng (Calamina) most. Badou (Crotonis Fructus) has a fierce nature and is supreme, yet it disagrees with Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen). Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) must not be seen with Yujin (Curcumae Longae Radix); Yanxiao (Natrii Sulfas) is difficult to combine with Jing Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma). Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Preparata) and Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) do not accord with Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu); Renshen fears Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces) most. Guanzi (Cinnamomi Cortex) is good at regulating cold qi, but if it meets Shizhi (Haematitum), it will be deceived. Generally, when compounding medicines, one must observe compatibility and incompatibility; during processing (pao zhi), they should not rely on or conflict with each other.
Zhike (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Yelangdu, and Zhuyu (Euodiae Fructus)—these six herbs are suitable for long-term storage; only then does one realize their miraculous efficacy in medicine.
For Liver deficiency, use Chenpi and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) to tonify. According to the principle "tonify the mother in deficiency," the Kidney is the mother of the Liver; therefore, use Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), and Huangbai to tonify. If there are no other symptoms, Qian Shi's Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) is the primary formula. For Liver excess, use Baishao to drain. If there are no other symptoms, Qian Shi's Xieqing Wan (Drain Green Pill) is the primary formula. According to the principle "drain the child in excess," use Gancao to drain Heart Fire, because the Heart is the child of the Liver. For Heart deficiency, use Chao Yan (Fried Salt) to tonify. According to the principle "tonify the mother in deficiency," the Liver is the mother of the Heart; therefore, use Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) to tonify the Liver. If there are no other symptoms, Qian Shi's Anshen Wan (Calm Spirit Pill) is the primary formula. For Heart excess, use Gancao to drain. If there are no other symptoms, in Qian Shi's formulas, severe cases use Xiexin Tang (Drain Heart Decoction), and mild cases use Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder). For Spleen deficiency, use Gancao and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) to tonify. For Spleen excess, use Huanglian and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) to drain. If there are no other symptoms, Qian Shi's Yiyuan San (Benefit Origin Powder) is the primary formula. According to the principle "tonify the mother in deficiency," the Heart is the mother of the Spleen; therefore, use Chao Yan to tonify the Heart. According to the principle "drain the child in excess," the Lung is the child of the Spleen; therefore, use Sangbaipi (Morus Cortex) to drain the Lung. For Lung deficiency, use Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) to tonify; for Lung excess, use Sangbaipi to drain. If there are no other symptoms, Qian Shi's Ejiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder) is the primary formula. According to the principle "tonify the mother in deficiency," the Spleen is the mother of the Lung; therefore, use Gancao and Dazao to tonify the Spleen. According to the principle "drain the child in excess," the Kidney is the child of the Lung; therefore, use Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) to drain the Kidney. For Kidney deficiency, use Shudihuang and Huangbai to tonify. The Kidney has no excess conditions and cannot be drained. Qian Shi only has Bushen Dihuang Wan (Tonify Kidney Rehmannia Pill) and has no Kidney-draining formulas. According to the principle "tonify the mother in deficiency," the Lung is the mother of the Kidney; therefore, use Wuweizi to tonify the Lung. The above methods for tonifying and draining the five Zang organs are fully recorded in the *Suwen* chapter "Organ Qi Laws and Times." To investigate the details further, refer to this treatise.
