Shen Douyuan stated: After the smallpox scabs fall off, cleanliness should be maintained. If one mistakenly consumes "stimulating foods" (foods believed to exacerbate skin conditions) or frequently exposes oneself to wind in open areas, it may cause fine sores to reappear. These sores resemble scabies but are not scabies, and they are most difficult to cure. Internally, it is advisable to use 1–2 liang of Sichuan honey, boiled with water until rolling, and sipped occasionally. Externally, dry feces from a pregnant sow should be sun-dried and burned to ash. The amount is unrestricted. Add 5 fen each of Calomelas (Qingfen) and Talcum (Huashi), grind into a fine powder, mix evenly with wine, and apply by sweeping and rubbing with a goose feather. This will lead to recovery. (From *Qixuan*)
Nie Jiuwu stated: Whenever cold-natured medicines are used, except for Yang-pattern Cold Damage (Yang Zheng Shanghan), heat-accumulated dysentery, and other excess-heat patterns, if they are employed to subdue flaming-upward fire or to clear fire in the blood aspect, they all embody the principle of "using cold for heat" (Han Yin Re Yong). It is essential to follow the methods of wine-frying and wine-processing. Even among cold medicines, those processed according to these rules yield efficacy, while those not processed according to rules cause harm. For instance, the various detoxifying cold medicines used before and after treating smallpox are employed because toxic fire dries and damages the blood; their purpose is to enter the blood aspect to cool and invigorate blood circulation. Therefore, Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen), and Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) must be moistened with wine and stir-fried until dry. Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi) must be fried until fragrant and ground. Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdi), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Carthami Flos (Honghua), Lithospermi Herba (Zicao), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), and Lycii Cortex (Digupi) must be washed with wine immediately before use. This is a crucial method. However, contemporary physicians often act negligently and carelessly, using cold medicines raw without following processing rules. This not only fails to benefit but often causes harm. Such errors are significant, yet people remain unaware. Not only do patients not know, but physicians themselves also fail to realize this. If they were aware of this error, how could they save such minor labor at the cost of causing great harm? Therefore, I have explicitly outlined these points to instruct future generations. The general principles of processing are as follows: For heat patterns, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), and Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) are all used raw; for deficiency-cold patterns, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) is roasted (Zhi), Astragali Radix (Huangqi) is honey-roasted, and Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) is wine-fried.
(Although terminology varies across regions, the condition is essentially the same rash disease. The methods of regulation and treatment are identical, and the taboos are no different.) In the capital and its surroundings, it is called Warm Rash (Wenzhen). In Henan, it is called Sha Chuang. In Shanxi and Shaanxi, it is called Kang Chuang. In Shandong, it is called Zhenzi. In Jiangnan and Zhejiang, it is called Shazhen. In Huguang and Jiangxi, it is called Mazhen, also known as Shaozi. In Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan, it is uniformly called Zhenzi.
