Feng Luzhan stated: Hair is the surplus of blood. Dry and withered hair indicates a deficiency of blood. Sudden hair loss accompanied by an itchy scalp, along with the falling out of beard and eyebrows, is a sign of wind generated by blood heat, resembling the shaking of wind and wood. Hair loss after illness, sores, or childbirth results from the depletion of essence and blood, failing to nourish the body. Treatment should primarily focus on tonifying essence and blood.
The *Yi Jian* (Medical Mirror) states: Hair and eyebrow loss caused by excessive consumption of acrid and hot medicines results from injury to liver blood and stirring of fire, rather than external wind. Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) are suitable to nourish liver blood and generate kidney water.
The Classics state: Hair is the sprout of blood.
The *Xin Xiang Bian* (Book of Physiognomy) states: Yellow hair in thin individuals indicates greed, adultery, or killing. Deep and dense hair in both men and women suggests lustfulness. Curly sideburns indicate lustfulness and a tendency to violate laws. Yellow hair indicates low moral character.
Formula for Blackening Beard and Hair:
Gongfen (Palace Powder), Zhen Gafen (True Clam Powder), Huangdan (Yellow Lead Oxide), Mituoseng (Lead Monoxide), Duanshi (Calcined Iron Ore) (equal parts).
Grind uniformly, mix with water, apply topically. After drying, wash off with water, and moisturize with walnut oil.
For women whose hair falls easily and lacks luster:
Feizi (Torreya Seed) (3 pieces), Hutaorou (Walnut Kernel) (2 pieces), Cebaiye (Platycladi Cacumen) (1 liang).
Pound and soak in snow water, then use to comb the hair, making it lustrous and preventing loss.
Method for Growing Long Hair:
Slice fresh ginger and rub it on bald, shiny areas of the scalp; hair will grow within a few days.
For Hair Loss That Does Not Regrow:
Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper) 4 liang, soaked in fermented rice wine for seven days. Apply morning and evening to the bald area; hair will naturally grow.
The *Ling Shu* states: When qi and blood are abundant in the upper part of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, eyebrows are beautiful, and individual hairs grow within them.
Feng Luzhan stated: The area where eyebrows grow is nourished by the essence and qi of the Liver. If the organ's essence and qi are deficient, the hairs in that area will not be nourished.
Gu Shicheng stated: Spontaneous eyebrow loss is due to liver deficiency and blood scarcity, failing to provide nourishment, or due to the binding of wind-dampness causing gradual loss, similar to trees withering and branches shedding leaves. Treatment should primarily focus on nourishing blood and benefiting the liver.
The *Xin Xiang Bian* states: Sparse, flower-like eyebrows indicate blocked fortune. Thin eyebrows in men indicate gaining wealth from women. Black moles growing on eyebrows attract gossip from women and portend water-related disasters.
