Gu Shicheng states: For back carbuncles (Fa Bei, 发背) that have initially formed, fumigation methods can be used. This allows unformed abscesses to dissipate, formed ones to naturally ulcerate, and ulcers to heal easily. This method was kept secret and not passed down. Through diligent inquiry, I obtained this prescription, which has proven quite effective.
Qianjin Shencao Fumigation Prescription (Yuan Shengbo): For Fa Bei or Duikou sores that have formed, with severe swelling and pain, whether unulcerated or already ulcerated.
Qianjin Cao (One handful; note: Qianjin Cao grows two to three chi high in June, leaves resemble peach leaves, with a cluster of purple flowers on top resembling Purple Daphne flowers).
Pound into a paste, place in a small-mouthed clay pot, and bring to a boil. Have the patient lie supine on a wooden board with a hole, positioning the sore over the hole. Hold the clay pot against the hole to fumigate. After a short while, toxic fluid resembling saliva will flow from the sore. Continue until the patient feels comfortable. Then apply topical ointment/poultice to the affected area and bandage it. Prepare fresh medicine for fumigation the next day. After three fumigations, when all toxic fluid has drained, the condition will heal spontaneously.
Shenyan Fumigation Prescription (Wu Gengxiang)
Ruyi Cao (Ploughshare Grass, i.e., *Patrinia scabiosifolia*); Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) (each 5 qian); Sang Ye (Mori Folium) (3 qian); San Jiao Feng (also known as Pa Bi Wu Gong, a vine on maple trees with clusters of three leaves) (1 liang).
Place the above ingredients in a large clay pot, add water, and bring to a boil. Seal the mouth of the jar with paper. Wrap the healthy skin around the sore with cotton. Take a doorboard, cut a hole corresponding to the size of the toxic sore, and position it for fumigation. The medicinal vapor penetrates directly into the toxin, causing significant discharge of foul fluid. Perform this fumigation three times; the toxin will dissipate and the patient will heal. If not healed, fumigate once more. If already ulcerated, this method is also suitable. If multiple heads of pus erupt, wash with decoction of green onion bulbs. If there is necrotic tissue or the sore is dry, wash with Zhuti Tang (Pig Trotter Decoction) and cover with plaster. This is a miraculous method; keep it secret.
