Chen Shigong stated: Putao Yi (Grape-like Eruption) occurs when children are affected by the abnormal Qi of the four seasons, which stagnates in the skin without dispersing, forming large and small blue-purple macules resembling grapes. It appears all over the body, head, and face, constituting a Fu-organ syndrome. It has no exterior or interior differentiation. If the pathogenic toxin transmits to the Stomach, causing bleeding from the gums, prolonged illness leads to deficiency in the person, after which the macules gradually recede. In the initial stage, Lingyang Jiao Tang (Antelope Horn Decoction) should be taken to clear heat and cool the blood. For prolonged cases, internal nourishment is required. For those with rotting gums, Renzhongbai San (Human Tooth Ash Powder) is indicated. (*Waike Zhengzong*)
*Yizhong Xinfa* states: This condition is most common on the legs and shins.
Lingyang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Powder) [from *Waike Zhengzong*]
Lingyang Jiao (Antelope Horn), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Niubangzi (Arctium Fruit), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (each 8 fen), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root) (2 fen), Dan Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf) (10 slices).
Boil in two bowls of water until reduced to six-tenths. Take after meals.
Weipi Tang (Stomach and Spleen Decoction) [from *Waike Zhengzong*]
Bei Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry) (5 fen), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Yuanzhi Rou (Polygala Root Flesh), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Shashen (Glehnia Root), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) (5 fen).
Boil in two bowls of water until reduced to six-tenths. Take after meals. If weak with spontaneous sweating, remove Shashen and add Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Huangqi (Astragalus Root) at 5 fen each.
Feigan San (Non-Guan Mouth Ulcer Powder) Treats gum rot caused by Putao Yi.
Wubeizi (Chinese Gall) (stir-fried to tea-brown color), Renzhongbai (Calcinata Dentis Hominis) (each 1 liang), Bingpian (Borneol) (4 fen).
Grind into fine powder. Rinse the mouth clean with rice washing water, then insufflate the powder into the lesion.
Chen Shigong stated: "Liu" (Flow) refers to movement; "Zhu" (Pour/Station) refers to staying. Due to blood stasis and obstruction, the shape is diffuse swelling without a head, and the skin color remains unchanged. It can arise anywhere, regardless of acupoints. All stem from Ying-Qi (Nutritive Qi) failing to follow its course, reversing into the flesh and muscle. If caused by Wind-Cold invasion where exterior symptoms were not fully dispersed, use dispersion methods; if caused by Yin deficiency and external Cold invasion after sexual activity, use warming methods; if caused by anger injuring the Liver and depression injuring the Spleen, use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) added with Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel) and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) to disperse; if caused by trauma and blood stasis, use He Xue Tang (Harmonize Blood Decoction) to expel stasis; if caused by postpartum lochia remaining and flowing into meridians, use Muxiang Liqi Yin (Costus Qi-Moving Infusion) to guide it out. If internal resolution is not achieved, the method requires greatly nourishing Qi and Blood, supporting the Spleen and Stomach, warming the meridians, and unblocking joints. Shiquan Dabu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction) added with Shu Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) and Xiangfu is indicated. If pus has formed, it should be drained urgently. (*Waike Zhengzong*)
Wang Kentang stated: Non-migratory cases are commonly called Ma Yong (Horse Abscess). Migratory cases are named Zousan Liuzhu (Scattered Flowing Pouring) and commonly called Gouteng Ma Yong (Melon Vine Horse Abscess). Pain inside the bones and joints all over the body, inability to sit or rise, no protrusion, and persistent fever are named Suogu Ma Yong (Snapping Bone Horse Abscess). If protrusions appear on the spine or femur, whether one or two, or three to five, they are named Guoji Ma Yong (Crossing Spine Horse Abscess). If a protrusion appears on the sacrum with fever, it is named Shacun Ma Yong (Killing Buttock Horse Abscess). If severe pain below the femur without protrusion but with swelling, it is named Suojiao Ma Yong (Locking Foot Horse Abscess). If pain occurs at bone junctions without protrusion but with slight swelling, it is named Jiagu Ma Yong (Connecting Bone Horse Abscess). This condition arises from Wind-Heat scattering to the four limbs; treatment should focus on dispelling Wind and clearing Heat. Initially, do not use fire needles or cauterization. If swelling is severe, only lance with a triangular needle; if mature, fire needles may be used. If the pouring toxin enters the thigh, death ensues. (*Yixue Zhunsheng*)
Furthermore: Cold-natured and purgative internal-resolving formulas are contraindicated.
Wang Shengzhi stated: "Liu" (Flow) indicates movement, characteristic of robust Qi and Blood with no opportunity for cessation; "Zhu" (Station) indicates staying, due to Qi and Blood deficiency leading to stagnation. Thus, flow follows nature, while station results from obstruction. Those who contract this disease are mostly weak individuals or laborers who fail to regulate their lifestyle properly, sleeping exposed in summer and autumn, seeking cooling excessively, exposing hot bodies to wind; or where Wind-Cold pathogen was not fully dispersed; or Yin deficiency with external Cold invasion after sexual activity; or anger injuring the Liver and depression injuring the Spleen, causing Ying-Qi to reverse into the flesh; or trauma causing blood stasis; or postpartum lochia remaining and flowing into meridians. All these form this disease. Initially, apply Hubo Gao (Amber Plaster) externally and take Qi-moving and Blood-invigorating formulas internally; among ten cases, five or six may resolve. If internal resolution fails, the method requires greatly nourishing Qi and Blood, supporting the Spleen and Stomach, warming meridians, and unblocking joints. Muxiang Liqi Yin and Shiquan Dabu Tang, both added with Shu Fuzi and Xiangfu, support the root. Thus, unruptured lesions will drain spontaneously, and ruptured ones will heal, avoiding residual destruction and non-healing ulcers. Moreover, if pus exists, it must be drained urgently. Avoid cold-natured and purgative internal-resolving drugs; many die from violating this rule. (*Yangke Lili*)
Zhu Danxi stated: Any lump in the upper, middle, or lower body in humans is Phlegm. However, if Phlegm is in the subcutaneous tissue and fascia, it travels throughout the body, swelling with white color, stagnant but painless; it should be guided and smoothed. If Phlegm moves due to Fire, there are many small lumps, red in color and very painful, moving unpredictably; detoxification and clearing Fire are primary.
Furthermore: Phlegm in the subcutaneous tissue and fascia cannot be cleared without Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) and Zhuli (Bamboo Sap); Phlegm in the hypochondrium cannot be reached without Baijiezi (White Mustard Seed). Baijiezi can also dissipate Phlegm-Qi in the subcutaneous tissue and fascia; Zhuli slides Phlegm, but without Ginger Juice, it cannot travel through meridians; Phlegm in the four limbs cannot be opened without Bamboo Sap.
Shen Douyuan stated: If sweating is insufficient in the Three Yang meridians during Shanghan (Cold Damage), pain inevitably occurs; prolonged pain leads to swelling; prolonged swelling leads to Heat; prolonged Heat leads to destruction. This is named Yang-Shitan Po Chuang (Yang-Damp-Phlegm Rupturing Sore). If sweating is missed in the Three Yin meridians, sweat stagnation forms Phlegm causing pain; prolonged pain leads to unchanged skin color but swelling; pain worsens at night; the painful area is ice-cold, and the pulse is deep and fine. Over time, Qi and Blood coagulate, causing muscle death; muscle death leads to destruction and putrid odor, named Yin-Shitan Po Chuang (Yin-Damp-Phlegm Rupturing Sore). Both should be treated with Moxibustion. (*Qixuan Mizhi*)
Furthermore: Cold Liuzhu often adheres to the bone, hard and unresolved, with cold bones and pain, tendon contraction preventing flexion and extension. Quacks mistakenly use knives and needles, finding no pus or blood, only fluid like dripping roof leaks or dark clotted blood. Hu yang Yu Long Gao (Restore Yang Jade Dragon Plaster) is indicated. If slightly milder, add Junjiang (Military Ginger), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), and Caowu (Aconitum Carmichaelii Root) in equal parts, mixed with hot wine for topical application. This removes bone cold and stops pain, warms the Qi allowing tendons to extend, softens flesh, and reduces swelling. Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome) must not be omitted because it breaks hardness and dissipates swelling excellently, but do not use too much, as it dissolves the properties of other herbs.
Furthermore: Applying Chonghe Gao (Harmony Plaster) at the beginning and end of Liuzhu treatment is safest. Adding Ruxiang (Frankincense) and Moyao (Myrrh) to treat Liuzhu with tendon immobility is extremely effective.
Furthermore: Zousan Liuzhu (Scattered Flowing Pouring) originates from cold exposure, congealing blood vessels. Also known as Liuzhu Shanghan (Liuzhu Cold Damage) or Gouteng Fabei (Melon Vine Back Carbuncle), it arises on the back and can occur all over the body. The Classics state: Shanghan Liuzhu is still manageable, but Liuzhu Shanghan is urgent as fire. Physicians must examine Cold, Heat, Deficiency, and Excess to treat it.
Hu Gongbi stated: Liuzhu is also called Zou Zhu. Its shape resembles a turtle. Toxin generates Heat due to excessive Wind; Qi scatters due to excessive Heat. In the morning, Sizijun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) is suitable; in the afternoon, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Renshen, Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Bei Wuweizi is suitable. Permeating and Qi-moving drugs must absolutely not be used. (*Qingnang*)
Furthermore: The general principle for treating Liuzhu is: for stagnation, open it; for anger, calm it; for trauma and postpartum blood stasis, disperse it; for residual Shanghan pathogens, harmonize and resolve it. The main emphasis is on consolidating Yuan Qi (Original Qi), assisted by drugs addressing current symptoms.
Furthermore: For one Liuzhu lesion, induce sweating once; for three lesions, induce sweating three times; the toxin will naturally dissipate. Delayed treatment causes great harm.
Furthermore: If broken and suppurating, first use descending drugs to remove necrotic flesh; once the rot is gone, generate new flesh.
*Yilin Jiyao* states: Baihu Feishi (White Tiger Flying Corpse) lingering for cycles or turning for several years, self-heals when cold toxin and rotten bones are completely expelled. If adhering-to-bone rot can be cured, straight-bone rot results in lifelong disability.
Furthermore: There are also tubercles in the neck, axilla, beside the breasts, or in the soft flesh of the groin, named Shi Yong (Stone Abscess), belonging to Cold syndromes. There are also pediatric cases of retained Phlegm failing to be guided, causing tubercles in the neck, buttocks, arms, chest, and back, also Cold syndromes. Hot drugs for topical application are suitable for both.
Wang Xipu stated: Liutan (Flowing Phlegm) flowing from the chest/abdomen to the four limbs is treatable; flowing from the four limbs to the chest/abdomen is difficult to treat.
*Yizhong Xinfa* states: Newly erupted Liuzhu presents as diffuse swelling without a head, unchanged skin color. After long-standing coagulation, slight heat and gradual pain appear; a single red spot emerges, indicating ripe pus, which should be punctured with a needle. If formed from Damp-Phlegm, pus is sticky and white; if from Blood Stasis, pus is golden-yellow and watery; if from Wind-Damp, pus is white and thin like bean juice; if from residual pathogens after sweating, pus is yellow or black, thin, and foul-smelling. The above four conditions heal if occurring in fleshy areas but are difficult to heal if occurring at bone nodes or hollows. If formed from sexual indulgence combined with Cold invasion, pus is thin, white, and fishy, with water containing pig-fat-like oil; this is败浆 Nong (Rotten Slurry Pus). Although various books have treatment methods, they ultimately result in failure syndromes.
Feng Luzhan stated: According to theory, fluids of the Zang-Fu organs becoming diseased turn into Phlegm, rising and falling with Qi; this is normal. However, if in the subcutaneous tissue/fascia and folds of the four limbs/joints, how can Zang-Fu Phlegm flow there? This is simply local fluids encountering Cold or Heat, congealing into Phlegm causing disease. It is definitely not fluids from other parts becoming Phlegm and shifting from their original location to another part. Furthermore, Qi is inherently formless, thus reaching every minute detail, and fluids move with Qi, circulating via Qi. Once fluids become diseased and turn into Phlegm, they become有形 (form/material) and stagnant; how can they circulate with Qi to the most minute and dense places?
Test for Phlegm: Paste Haizhe Pi (Sea Cucumber Skin) on the area, cover with plaster externally. If it is Phlegm, the next day the plaster comes off easily, but the Sea Cucumber Skin does not; this indicates harmful Phlegm.
