Chen Shigong stated: Individuals who habitually indulge in alcohol consumption may suffer from damp-heat and turbid qi of the Stomach Meridian (Stomach Channel) rising to熏 (fume/steal) the Lung Metal, resulting in the condition of Red Nose (Red Nasal Tip). (From *Waike Zhengzong*)
Feng Luzhan stated: Red Nose is formed by accumulated heat in the Lungs steaming upwards via the Six Yang Meridians. (From *Yizong Jinjian* - Brocade Satchel section)
He further stated: A white nasal tip indicates blood deficiency; a red nasal tip indicates blood heat. The face belongs to yang within yang, and the nose resides in the center of the face. The blood reaching the face and nose from the entire body consists of the purest and most refined blood. If blood is deficient and cannot nourish, the color appears white and lacks luster; if blood heat boils, it manifests as distinct redness. The Lung, as an organ, is located high, has a fragile constitution, fears cold, and detests heat. Therefore, in individuals who consume much alcohol, the fumes of wine steam upwards, causing 酒齄鼻 (Jiuzao Bi, Rosacea-like rhinophyma). The tip of the nose becomes redder when exposed to heat; hot blood coagulates when cooled, becoming turbid and stagnant, thus turning purple-black. The treatment principles are as follows: for blood deficiency, use warming and tonifying methods; for blood heat, use clearing and draining methods; for cold stagnation, resolve stagnation and generate new tissue using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with wine-fried Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and wine-soaked Honghua (Carthami Flos); for Qi deficiency, add wine-soaked Huangqi (Astragali Radix) to promote circulation. The treatment for 酒齄鼻 follows similar principles.
He also stated: The nose serves as the gateway for respiration. Heat steaming externally results in Lung Wind Red Nose (Feifeng Chibi), which is not solely caused by alcohol. Heat congesting internally leads to polyps or nasal sores. Thus, polyps arise from accumulated heat and depression in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) causing blockage.
Verified Prescription 1: Take two liang of golden Ledum (Miduoseng, Litharge), grind into an extremely fine powder, and mix with human milk or white honey to form a thin paste. Apply to the nose slightly heated before bedtime; wash off the next morning with mouthwash. It can be cured within one month.
Another Prescription: Walnut meat (with skin), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), and Yuanyanrou (Longan Aril) (three jin each). Mash into a paste to be eaten as a snack occasionally; the redness will naturally subside.
Another Prescription: Rub teeth with salt, then rinse with mouthwash. With time, it will recede spontaneously.
