For the initial stage of treating ulcerative diseases, regardless of severity or specific syndromes, whether Yin-type or Yang-type eruptions, this formula can unblock meridians (Meridians), promote Qi circulation and blood activation, dissipate swelling, detoxify, and relieve pain with miraculous efficacy. However, it is contraindicated for Ding-toxin (Furuncle toxin) on the head and face.
Prepared Cyperi Rhizoma (Zhi Xiangfu), Western Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Xi Qianghuo), Complete Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Quan Danggui), Dipsaci Radix (Chuan Duanrou) (each 3 liang); Raw Polygalae Radix (Sheng Yuanzhi Rou) (2 liang); Ming Yao Huang (Ming Yaohuang), White Alum (Bai Mingfan) (each 1 liang); Guang Di (Guangdi) (3 qian).
Grind each ingredient into fine powder and mix evenly. Separately, take 2 liang 6 qian of genuine Bufo Toxin (Du Chan Su), soak and dissolve it in Fenjiu (Fen Wine), then pound together with the powder to form pills the size of mung beans, coated with Cinnabar (Chen Sha). For minor conditions, take a fen amount per dose; for major conditions, take 1 qian to 1.5 qian per dose. If at the initial stage there is soreness, hardness, and swelling, and the patient can drink alcohol, swallow the pill with hot yellow wine; if unable to drink alcohol, administer with decoction of Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) and Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang). The pill must be swallowed whole, not chewed. If swelling and pain are severe and pus formation is imminent, it may also be taken, but with a slightly reduced dose; even after pus has formed, if hard lumps remain around the periphery, it may still be taken, until the hardness and swelling are completely dissipated.
[Formula Analysis] The use of Chan Su Tui Du Wan (Toad Venom Detoxification Pill) in surgery is old, yet its original formulation was rather complex and difficult to achieve effective results. This is the revised formula by Zhu from Huangqiang. In August of the Gengxu year, while treating a woman in Shanghai, I encountered a case of lumbar abscess (Yao Ju) with severe pain, where the swelling was already protruding high, accompanied by extreme soreness and stiffness of the back, indicating a critical condition with impending suppuration. I prescribed approximately 3 qian of this pill, instructing her to divide it into three doses, taken with hot aged wine, one dose daily. Unexpectedly, she took the entire amount at once and consumed a considerable amount of alcohol. After swallowing the medicine at dusk, by midnight, she developed intense fever like burning (she had pre-existing low-grade fever but not severe), and her mental state became confused, nearly failing to recognize people. I immediately visited her, finding that the fever had greatly subsided and her consciousness had cleared. She reported that her back pain had sharply decreased and her movements had become agile. Subsequently, I administered Xuan Tong Decoction (Xuantong Jian), and without further modification of the prescription, she recovered. This demonstrates the miraculous efficacy of this medicine. "If the medicine does not cause dizziness or nausea (mingxuan), the chronic disease will not be cured," as the saying goes.
