[Symptoms of Postpartum Asthma and Reverse Qi]
Rapid breathing in the throat, shortness of breath with coarse respiration, aversion to cold, fever, headache, and body aches. This is the syndrome of postpartum asthma and reverse qi caused by external contraction.
[Etiology of Postpartum Asthma and Reverse Qi]
During the prenatal, intrapartum, or postpartum periods, if daily life is not managed carefully and one accidentally contracts external pathogens, the internal vital energy (Zheng Qi) is first depleted. Consequently, external pathogens are difficult to dissipate, leading to stagnation and fever, which results in the syndrome of asthma and reverse qi.
[Pulse Diagnosis of Postpartum Asthma and Reverse Qi]
A floating and rapid pulse on the right hand indicates heat pathogens in the Lung and Stomach; a floating and tight pulse on the right hand indicates cold pathogens in the Lung and Stomach; a floating and rapid pulse on the left hand indicates wind-heat affecting the Taiyang channel.
[Treatment of Postpartum Asthma and Reverse Qi]
If the Taiyang channel is invaded by wind, use Xiong Gui Tang (Chuanxiong and Angelica Decoction), adding Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix). If the Taiyang channel is invaded by cold, use Xiong Gui Tang, adding Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) and Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen) according to dosage. If the Lung is invaded by wind-heat, use Xie Bai San (Drain the White Powder), adding Fang Feng and Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix). If the Lung is invaded by cold pathogens, use Xiong Gui Tang, adding Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) and Xing Ren.
Xiong Gui Tang (Chuanxiong and Angelica Decoction)
Herbs: Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
Xie Bai San (Drain the White Powder)

[Symptoms of Postpartum Internal Injury Asthma]
Rapid breathing in the throat, panting with shoulder lifting, dull eyes, and cyanotic lips. The body has no exterior pathogen signs. This is the syndrome of postpartum internal injury asthma.
[Etiology of Postpartum Internal Injury Asthma]
Excessive blood loss during childbirth causes sudden depletion of Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood), leaving Wei Qi (Defensive Energy) without mastery. This condition is named "Lonely Yang without Yin." If lochia (postpartum discharge) fails to discharge and rushes upward to attack the Lung and Stomach, it is also called "Evil Blood Attacking the Heart." Both conditions cause asthma.
[Pulse Diagnosis of Postpartum Internal Injury Asthma]
A Kou (Hollow) and Se (Choppy) pulse indicates blood deficiency; a Fu (Floating) and San (Scattered) pulse indicates Qi deficiency; a Chen (Deep) and Shu (Rapid) pulse indicates stagnation of heat in Qi and Blood.
[Treatment of Postpartum Internal Injury Asthma]
If the pulse is floating, scattered, fine, and weak, use Xiong Gui Tang, combined with Du Shen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction). If lochia fails to discharge, promoting the discharge of lochia should be the priority, using Tao Ren Hong Hua Tang (Peach Kernel and Safflower Decoction) or Duo Ming San (Life-Saving Powder). If stagnation is due to heat, use Mu Dan Pi San (Moutan Bark Powder); if stagnation is due to cold coagulation, use Si Shen San (Four Divine Powders); if there is body heat and lethargy/coma, use Su Xing Tang (Awakening Decoction).
Xiong Gui Tang See previous entry.
