If pox (smallpox) occurs after childbirth, rely solely on tonification methods and do not panic. Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Tonifying Decoction) is fully effective; avoid using cold-natured medicines to prevent damage.
[Note] After childbirth, a woman's Qi and Blood are already damaged. If she encounters pox, the supply of Qi and Blood is insufficient to carry and eliminate toxins. It is appropriate to greatly tonify Qi and Blood, treating with Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Tonifying Decoction). One must absolutely not recklessly use cold-natured agents, which would injure the mechanism of growth and vitality.
Shiquan Dabu Tang (See formula in the section on Crusting and Scab Falling Syndromes)
Ma (Measles) is the "correct rash" (Zheng Zhen), also resulting from fetal toxin. The toxin lies dormant in the Six Fu Organs and emerges upon contracting pathogenic factors. Its initial appearance resembles pox, but its shape is pointed, it becomes dense gradually, and crucially, it does not suppurate (form pus), which is distinct. Careful nursing throughout is essential; although milder than pox, its changes occur rapidly.
[Note] Rashes are not a single category; there are Sao Zhen (Itchy Rash), Yin Zhen (Hives), and Wen Zhen (Warm Rash). Generally, Pox and Zhen are not "correct rashes"; only Measles is the correct rash. It is also fetal toxin lying dormant in the Six Fu Organs, triggered by heaven-earth pathogenic Yang fire-heat qi, emerging from the Lung and Spleen. Thus, it often presents with coughing, sneezing, runny clear nose, watery eyes, and swollen eyelids. After fever for two or three days, or four or five days, spots begin to appear on the skin, shaped like millet grains, colored like peach blossoms. Occasionally, some may resemble larger pox lesions; this is the initial stage of measles. The shape is pointed and sparse initially, becoming denser gradually. There are granules without roots, slight redness/flushing without rising into pustules. This post-emergence state of measles differs significantly from pox. Vigilant treatment is required; one must never be negligent at any point. Although slightly milder than pox, its rapid changes happen in an instant.
The emergence of measles varies in severity; light and heavy cases must be carefully differentiated. Cases with harmonious Qi and Blood are light and easy to treat; those with mixed Exterior and Interior patterns are heavy and difficult to treat.
[Note] The emergence of measles has distinctions in severity, requiring careful observation at the time. If Qi and Blood are harmonious and the patient has no underlying diseases, even if contracted seasonal pathogens, righteous Qi can control the pathogen. Thus, fever is mild, sweating is slight, spirit is clear, and bowel/bladder functions are regular. Spots emerge thoroughly and dissipate evenly, neither too fast nor too slow; this is a light case, easy to treat. If the patient has pre-existing Wind-Cold or food stagnation, resulting in mixed Exterior and Interior patterns, contact with pathogenic Yang fire-heat qi causes internal and external factors to combine. Righteous Qi cannot control the pathogen, leading to high fever without sweat, irritability, thirst, unclear spirit, constipation, and dysuria. Spots fail to emerge thoroughly or dissipate properly, or emerge too tightly and quickly; this is a heavy case, difficult to treat.
