Question: "Is there Sha Zhang (a disease characterized by abdominal distension and pain caused by the stagnation of qi due to pathogenic foul pathogens) that recurs repeatedly after recovery?" Answer: "No." Therefore, to claim that Measles is Sha Zhang is erroneous. If a patient contracts Sha Zhang after recovering from Measles, and one treats it using methods for Measles, the error would be immense. Thus, it is crucial to understand the occurrence of Sha Zhang following Measles.
Clinical Cases:
1. A young daughter of Wang Risi, in January, after contracting Measles, suffered from white diarrhea and dysentery, which was slightly stabilized by treatment. Suddenly, she experienced abdominal pain with a short and faint pulse. I stated, "This pain is caused by new contact with foul pathogens, not by Measles." Pricking blood from over twenty points on the fingers did not cure her. She was given Jiuku Dan (Rescue Suffering Pill), taken with slightly cooled clear tea. Then, Huoxiang Tang (Agastache Decoction) was prescribed with added Radish Seed (Bai Fuzi), Safflower (Honghua), Lindera Root (Wuyao), and Akebia Stem (Mutong), served slightly chilled, resulting in immediate recovery.
2. Tao Yuansheng, after contracting Measles, suddenly developed high fever, red face, and incessant phlegm-wheezing. There was abnormal twitching pain in both temples and the Taiyang region. The pulse was not surging and slippery but rather soft and fine, indicating that Sha Qi (Sha pathogenic factor) was blocking the vessel pathways; the incessant phlegm-wheezing indicated Sha Qi obstructing upwards; the twitching pain in the temples and Taiyang region indicated Sha Toxin attacking the Three Yang meridians; the red face and fever indicated extreme toxin strength attacking the exterior. None of these were due to Measles. Six needles were used to prick the Sha veins in the popliteal fossa, releasing dark black toxic blood, but the condition persisted. Qingliang Zhibao Yin (Cooling Precious Treasure Decoction) was prescribed, with Xixin removed and Huangqin, Gegen, Honghua, Niuxi, and Mutong added, taken in two doses while slightly chilled, leading to gradual stabilization. However, due to abdominal fullness and pain upon pressure, Dingchen Awai Wan (Dingchen Asafoetida Pill) was taken with slight warmth. Subsequently, Bisheng Tang (Victory Guaranteed Decoction) was administered warm for four doses, resulting in the discharge of all black, foul-smelling toxic matter and recovery.
3. The son of Junfu, in February, after contracting Measles, suffered from body-wide pain and inability to turn or move, resembling residual toxins from Measles; however, treatment aggravated the heaviness. Upon consultation, the pulse was continuous like a string of pearls, occasionally rapid and hurried. Generally, body-wide pain preventing movement indicates Sha Toxin attacking the Blood level; the continuous, pearl-like, rapid pulse indicates Sha Stagnation in the middle jiao causing contraction and urgency of sinews and vessels; the aggravation of heaviness is due to mistakenly drinking warm substances, intensifying the internal attack of Sha Toxin. Four needles were pricked in the popliteal fossa, and over twenty needles in the arms and fingers, all yielding purple-black blood, yet the condition persisted. Taoren Honghua Tang (Peach Kernel and Safflower Decoction) was prescribed with added Niuxi, Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha), Aurantium Peel (Zhike), and ground Agarwood (Xiang), taken warm. After four doses, the condition stabilized.
