Grind all the above ingredients into powder, mix with refined honey to make pills, sized like pea seeds. Take thirty pills per dose, swallowed with red date decoction. For symptoms located in the upper body, add Jiegeng (2 qian); for those in the lower body, add Niuxi (2 qian). Take one or two doses of the decoction first, then proceed to take these pills, continuing until the lesions are completely resolved. If the patient is a pregnant woman, the primary focus should be on stabilizing the fetus; the herbs in this formula such as Chuanbei, Muli, Chuanjia, and Niubang are not suitable for consumption, which must be noted.
In summary, regarding various methods for treating Tanhe (phlegm nodules), external treatments account for eight or nine out of ten cases, while internal treatments account for one or two out of ten. If treating simple phlegm nodules, pure external treatment can also lead to recovery. However, for treating Luoli (scrofula/tuberculous lymphadenitis), if internal and external treatments are not combined, and deficiency is not tonified, and qi and blood are not harmonized, relying solely on internal treatment cannot be neglected. The ability to apply these methods divinely and intelligently depends on the individual practitioner.
As the proverb says: "Denghuo (lamp-fire therapy) has the power to push mountains." For such difficult-to-treat conditions caused by yin deficiency, it is indeed hard to achieve efficacy using only external lamp-fire therapy without accompanying internal medicine. However, there are areas on the human body where Denghuo is contraindicated. If mistakenly applied, death may occur within moments due to lack of rescue. Therefore, special marks must be made to ensure practitioners remain vigilant everywhere. For example, Denghuo must not be mistakenly used on the throat, hypochondrium, eyes, xionwo (heart pit), yaoyan (waist eyes), shaofu (lower abdomen), and umbilicus. However, there is a type of phlegm nodule growing between the skin under the chin, named Dianshi tan (pad-tongue phlegm), and Tieshuanshan (iron gate tie) located on both sides of the throat, which greatly obstructs the throat. Jiaxie tan (hypochondriac phlegm) arises in the xieyan (hypochondriac eye), Chan Yao tan (wrapping-waist phlegm) erupts at the yaoyan, and Xibu Tiegu tan (lower bone-adhering phlegm) often occurs in the Shuxi acupoint (inguinal region), which also affects the xieyan, yaoyan, and shaofu. But these locations are critical points related to Qi gates; only one or two spots on top of the nodule should be burned, while the area around the outside of the nodule, where there are no fixed burning points, should still strictly prohibit fire attacks. One must be vigilant every step of the way and not be negligent, lest healing becomes killing.
Furthermore, when using Denghuo therapy, it should be performed once every seven days, following the principle of "seven days for renewal." It should not be too urgent or too slow; being too late or too hasty is unbeneficial and harmful. The treatment continues until the nodules are completely eliminated. The speed of recovery should be determined based on the severity of the condition. In my treatment of Luoli, patients often lack endurance and persistence, occasionally changing doctors midway. With complex medications, seeking quick results often aggravates the condition, leading to untreatable cases, which is truly regrettable. They do not realize that this disease, if mild, can heal in a few days; if severe, it requires several months to show effect. Patients must adhere to the schedule for external fire therapy and internal decoctions and pills, avoiding excessive haste for recovery.
Additionally, after using fire therapy, all plaster applications can be omitted. Why? Because after using Denghuo, if the sesame oil on the rush wick is not completely clean, blisters may form on the burned skin. Applying plasters on top may cause the skin to ulcerate easily, and acupoints become difficult to identify. Thus, having used Denghuo, plasters become not only useless but harmful. If an ulcerated wound is difficult to heal, one may only lightly burn the ulcerated area with Denghuo, or place Zhenzhu Sha (Pearl Powder) over the ulcer before applying Denghuo. There will surely be no failure in efficacy.
