Since my childhood, I have seen those suffering from this disease in my hometown coming to my door daily to cry for help.
My father, Mr. Yuquan, possessed skilled hands and eyes (metaphor for medical expertise), diagnosing symptoms and applying treatments, resulting in recovery within specified periods; such cases were countless. For the poor who could not afford to purchase prescriptions and medicines,
my father
often prepared ready-made pills to give away without seeking repayment. Therefore, neighbors suffering from Tanli (Phlegm Leprosy) all had something to rely on and felt no fear. In the Bingxu year of the Guangxu reign, my father passed away.
At that time, my grandmother was still alive. She once instructed me, saying: "Our family's treatment of Tanli began with your great-grandfather. After Great Peak Gong (Yuanfeng) suffered from this condition, he sought medical treatment from a certain doctor in Hunan. He invited doctors to his home for treatment, recovered after several months, and thus received the transmission of this skill. Your grandfather and your father both knew this technique, helping people in their emergencies and promoting the gate of charity. Why do you not take the established methods and learn them? This is also continuing the affairs of our ancestors." I respectfully obeyed the command, applied treatment according to the method, and never failed to achieve efficacy. However, I observed that since modern times, the number of patients has increased day by day.
Among those treated by me, recoverable cases are innumerable. Those who did not seek medical treatment died or perished in unknown numbers; even if they did not die, they either developed Laozai (consumptive disease/tuberculosis) or became disabled. Alas, we humans frequently suffer from these malignant diseases; is it not deeply pitiable? Therefore, disregarding my own ignorance and shallowness, I carefully compiled what I had heard and seen in the past, and what I had experienced and verified in practice. First, I distinguish and discuss the conditions; second, I explain the treatment methods in detail; finally, I briefly recount medical cases. I strive for simplicity and appropriateness, so that readers may understand everything at a glance, avoiding the bitterness of questioning and raising difficulties. If everyone obtains this book, then everyone can treat this disease. If everyone can treat this disease, then billions upon billions of people will be free from this illness. This is also the intention of opening a convenient gateway for the vast multitude of living beings. Hence, I named this book *Tanli Famen* (Methodology of Treating Tanli). If scholars inside and outside the field, who are knowledgeable and profound, discover new insights into this condition, exploring its merits and defects, and are not afraid of criticism, correction, improvement, and evolution, this is what I hope for in the future.
Respectfully Prefaced by Li Qing Shen Ziyi of Zhanshui, Chu North, on the 11th Day of the 4th Month, the 7th Year of the Republic of China.
