After the healthy Qi (Zhengqi) has been damaged by Miasma Malaria (Zhang Nue), this formula is exclusively used. It should be taken five to six times a day. People in the southern regions often experience spontaneous sweating (Zihan); therefore, methods of inducing sweating (Fahan), purging (Xiafa), or vomiting (Tufa) are contraindicated. The disease is mostly caused by the Spleen and Stomach being affected by cold pathogens.
This formula harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach and expels wind pathogens, with miraculous efficacy. For mild cases, the disease will not recur after recovery; for severe cases, symptoms will also alleviate spontaneously.
Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 8 ounces, processed), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 2 liang, white pith removed), Bencao (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong? Note: Text says "Ben", likely Gaoben/Ligusticum jeholense or similar, here translated as Bencao/Rhizoma Ligustici based on context of Taiyang channel, but strictly "Ben" usually refers to Rhizoma Ligustici/Jingben or Radix Angelicae Dahuricae/Baibian. Given "Taiyang Jing Yao" and headache, it is likely *Jingben* (Rhizoma Ligustici). I will use Rhizoma Ligustici (Jingben)), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 4 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 4 liang), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, 2 liang, bark removed, soaked in ginger juice and stir-fried).
Grind all ingredients into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 3 qian, add 1 zhong of water, 3 slices of fresh ginger, and 1 date. Decoct together until reduced to 70%, strain, and take hot. Take five to six times a day, at any time. If the malaria does not attack after taking this medicine, continue taking this medicine for one day before taking other medicines. Even if the attack is slightly milder, there is still remarkable efficacy. If it recurs the next day, take again. Take five to six times a day. If it does not recur after the third time, stop taking this medicine and switch to other medicines. If it recurs after three times, resume taking this medicine without stopping. This is extremely effective for treating Miasma.
Even if it is malaria caused by Wind-Cold or Cold Damage, when the syndrome differentiation is not yet clear, this medicine can be taken concurrently. There will be effective results within one or two days. If there is no effect, then medicate according to specific symptoms. If suitable medicines are unavailable, taking this medicine from the onset to the end of the illness is effective. Miasma diseases arise from dampness of the earth; dampness generates phlegm. When the weather is hot, Yang Qi escapes outward, leaving the Spleen and Stomach prone to cold. In this formula, Cangzhu is the Sovereign herb. It removes dampness without closing the Couli (pores), facilitating easy sweating. When sweat is released, the pathogen diminishes with it. Combined with Houpo, Gancao, and Chenpi, it forms Pingwei San (Stomach-Pacifying Powder), which removes dampness, warms the Spleen and Stomach, eliminates cold qi, and regulates Middle Qi. When dampness is removed, phlegm is not generated. When the Spleen and Stomach are warm and cold qi is eliminated, the Earth element becomes warm and Middle Qi is regulated. Furthermore, due to warmth and harmony, Miasma toxins cannot remain, and the disease naturally resolves through sweating. Added Bencao (Rhizoma Ligustici), a herb of the Taiyang Channel (Taiyang Jing). Headache, fever, and stiffness/pain in the waist and spine indicate pathogenic factors stagnating in the Taiyang Channel. Bencao enables the pathogen to resolve naturally through sweating and treats wind flowing into the four limbs. Any exposure to mist and dew can cause Miasma; Bencao expels this qi and clears the Upper Jiao, further dispelling wind and removing dampness. Jiegeng benefits Lung Qi and transforms phlegm, dispersing Miasma-heat qi in the chest and diaphragm. Combined with Pingwei San, it forms a Harmonizing Formula, making it a divine formula for treating Miasma through harmonization.
