Treats cold damage and malarial fevers. When the syndrome patterns of Yin and Yang are unclear, misadministration of medicines may lead to critical and distressing conditions, characterized by irritability and thirst, as well as postpartum complications in women where fetal heat induces malarial symptoms.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [1 liang, remove rhizome, slice]
Add two zhong of water, decoct in a silver or earthenware vessel until reduced to one zhong. Cool with cold water, take the liquid in one dose. It is especially auspicious if sweat drips from the nose.
Treats cold damage and malarial dysentery, contraction of summerheat and dampness, difficult urination, headache, body heat, irritability, and thirst. This is particularly indicated in summer. However, it should not be taken excessively by those with deficiency of Kidney Qi at the lower jiao.
Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) [3 liang] Zhu Ling (Polypori Umbellati Sclerotium) [remove skin, 1.5 liang] Fu Ling (Poria) [remove skin, 1.5 liang] Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) [1 liang] Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [remove rhizome, 1.5 liang]
Grind all into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose. In summer, if there is coldness in the back, headache, fever without sweating, and constipation of urine, mix with thickly decocted Scallion White Decoction and take hot. It is ideal if sweat appears on the forehead. Alternatively, use Baigun Tang (Boiling Water) mixed hot, followed by continued drinking of hot soup to induce sweating. For extreme summerheat stroke, mixing with fresh drawn water is also acceptable. For hot malarial dysentery with difficult urination, mix with hot water. For diarrhea with difficult urination, mix with Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) decoction. Do not take excessively. For stasis-heat in the interior causing jaundice, mix with Yin Chen Hao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) Decoction. Adding Chen Sha (Cinnabar) is especially effective for treating accumulated heat and mental restlessness.
Mao Chongfu, moved by his filial piety touching heaven and earth due to his mother's illness, received this prescription in a dream; it can be called a miraculous formula. However, the use of Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) in Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is like the use of Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) in Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), or Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) in Bei Ji Wan (Emergency Pill); it aims to balance rigid and soft properties, embodying the intent of offense and defense. Therefore, medical texts state that Wu Ling San without Rou Gui or using non-aged herbs is unusable. If Rou Gui is removed and Ren Shen added, it is called Chun Ze Tang (Spring Moisture Decoction), which is effective for treating irritability.
Treats stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen caused by malarial fevers, regulating the middle jiao, and promoting qi movement.
Wu Yao (Linderae Radix) [1 liang] Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) [3 liang, roasted dry] Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [1 liang, stir-fried]
Grind all together into a fine powder. Add a small amount of salt and take with boiling water.
