Blood stasis in the Yang meridians leads to impaired circulation of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, resulting in aversion to cold; blood stasis in the Yin meridians leads to impaired circulation of Ying and Wei Qi, resulting in fever. When Yang Qi is insufficient, Yin Qi invades the Yang aspect, causing aversion to cold; when Yin Qi is insufficient, Yang Qi sinks into the Yin aspect, causing fever. External cold pathogens invading the exterior meridians cause Ying and Wei Qi obstruction, leading to fever; internal cold damage to the zang-fu organs causes Ying and Wei Qi obstruction, leading to cold sensations.
When Yin and Yang are disharmonious, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is used with modifications: remove Shudi Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), add Renshen (Ginseng), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), and Gancao (Licorice). (Supplement 7)
When Yin and Yang fail to remain in their proper positions, with Yang sinking and Yin rising, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) is used. (Supplement 5)
When Yuan Qi (Original Qi) has not yet recovered and damp-heat takes advantage of this weakness, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment Qi Decoction) is used. (Supplement 6)
For thirst due to Blood deficiency, Danggui Buxue Tang (Danggui Tonifies Blood Decoction) is used. (Supplement 48)
When Liver Wood overacts on Spleen Earth, causing food stagnation and alternating chills and fever, Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) is used. (Supplement 1)
For wind-cold pathogens lodging in the meridians, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Lianxu (Lotus Stamen), and Congbai (Scallion White) are used.
For distending pain in the breast ducts, Qumai (Dianthus Herb), Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Juhua Fen (Trichosanthes Root), Gancao (Licorice), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) are decocted and taken orally.
Belching and chest/epigastric fullness indicate food injury; Yigong San (Yi Gong Powder) plus Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit) and Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) is used. (Supplement 22)
Sweat is essentially blood, belonging to Yin. When Yin fluids are lost, Yang Qi follows and dissipates; thus it is said: "Excessive sweating leads to collapse of Yang." It is also stated: "Sweat is the fluid of the Heart." In Blood deficiency, Kidney Yin cannot ascend to nourish the Heart, leading to Heart deficiency and spontaneous sweating. Furthermore, if Yin fluids suddenly collapse, Yang Qi has no anchor and floats outward, causing incessant sweating.
Postpartum spontaneous sweating accompanied by unresolved abdominal mass pain requires first administering Shenghua Tang (Postpartum Recovery Decoction), followed immediately by Tiaowei Zhihan Tang (Regulate Defensive and Stop Sweating Decoction). Once sweating stops, reduce the dosage of Renshen (Ginseng) to resolve the abdominal mass pain. (Harmony 24, Supplement 49)
For rambling speech during sleep and constipation, Jiashen Shenghua Tang (Shenghua Tang with Added Ginseng) plus Mahuang Gen (Ephedra Root), Zaoren (Sour Jujube Seed), and Digupi (Phellodendron Bark) is used. (Supplement 37)
For sweating accompanied by diarrhea, Jiashen Shenghua Tang plus Mahuang Gen (Ephedra Root), Rouguou (Nutmeg) and Lianzi (Lotus Seed) is used. (Supplement 37)
For excessive sweating with scanty urination, Jiashen Shenghua Tang plus Mahuang Gen (Ephedra Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Gegen (Kudzu Root), and Bei Wuwei Zi (Schisandra Berry) is used. (Supplement 37)
Excessive sweating leading to Yin collapse and subsequent tendon spasm, resembling Jing syndrome (Spasm Syndrome), should be treated with Jiawei Shenghua Tang (Modified Shenghua Decoction). (Harmony 40)
Profuse sweating like rain, dry mouth and tongue, fever, and restlessness indicate dried-up essence and blood failing to nourish the Heart, and Yang failing to transform without Yin. Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), and Sangye (Mulberry Leaf) combined with Shengmai San (Generate Pulse Powder) are used. (Harmony 23)
Sweating upon hearing sounds and vomiting all medicines upon ingestion indicates failure of Spleen Qi. Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Fuzi (Aconite Root) are powdered and swallowed with saliva.
Confusion, dizziness, and lethargy indicate blood loss with blazing fire. Only tonifying blood is required; Huoxue Tang (Invigorate Blood Decoction) from *Quansheng Ji* is used. (Supplement 51)
Postpartum sweating is often caused by fatigue or fright. The *Neijing* states: "Laborious movement causes sweat from the Spleen; fright depleting essence causes sweat from the Heart; fear causes sweat from the Liver." Due to these factors, postpartum women cannot secure their fluids, leading to sweating. One should strengthen the Spleen and Stomach so that grain essence irrigates the body, harmonizing the Five Viscera and stopping sweating naturally. Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) is used. (Supplement 19)
Postpartum Blood deficiency with spontaneous sweating and shortness of breath indicates floating Lung Qi. However, excessive blood loss forces Yang outward due to Yin pressure, causing incessant sweating. Ziying Yiqi Tang (Nourish Ying and Augment Qi Decoction) is indicated. (Supplement 38). This restores blood, bringing relief to the woman.
Postpartum deficiency of True Yang presents with panting, cold extremities, shortness of breath, night sweats, and spontaneous sweating. Dasheng San (Great Sage Powder) is used. (Supplement 12). For Heart deficiency night sweats or sleep sweating, Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) is used. (Supplement 3). For Qi collapse spontaneous sweating, treat as Sweat Collapse syndrome. Profuse sweating with shortness of breath and cold skin requires urgent administration of Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) to tonify Qi. (Supplement 4). If Yin/Blood collapses downward while solitary Yang rebels upward causing profuse sweating, this is a critical condition requiring immediate administration of Sijunzi Tang plus Huangqi (Astragalus Root) and Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry) for rescue.
If spontaneous sweating is due to Blood deficiency leaking outward, Zhihan San (Stop Sweating Powder) is appropriate. (Supplement 52)
