This formula is designed for cases where, after recovery from Cold Damage (Shanghan, 伤寒) [a disease caused by cold pathogenic factors], the eyes suffer a severe subsequent illness. The qi of the four seasons all contain cold; contracting it can cause disease in humans, not only in winter. Contracting from the exterior is termed wind and dew pathogens; contracting from the interior is termed raw and cold food pathogens. Exterior deficiency leads to external contraction; interior deficiency leads to internal contraction. If both exterior and interior are deficient, there is simultaneous dual contraction. Diseases arising from dual contraction are often difficult to cure. Fortunately, one has now recovered, but the true qi of the zang-fu organs has not yet returned. Thus, turbid yin cannot descend, and clear yang cannot ascend. With clear and turbid qi not distinguished, residual pathogens gather, lodging in the hollow orifices and harming the eyes. In this formula, Qianghuo and Duhuo initiate the ascending of yang. Fuling and Zexie guide the descending of yin. Renshen, Baizhu, and Gancao greatly tonify the spleen and stomach; when the interior is full, pathogens find no room to reside. Huangqi and Fangfeng greatly solidify the skin and hair; when the exterior is dense, wind naturally cannot enter. Danggui and Dihuang nourish kidney water to generate blood; Chaihu and Shaoyao collect consumption and direct the channels. Taking ten doses largely will make the Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) qi unobstructed. Subsequently, taking nourishing and benefiting substances will cause the clear to return to yang, the turbid to return to yin, the ascending to ascend, and the descending to descend, thus eliminating the disease. Physicians of the world carelessly label it generally as "Cold Damage Seasonal Eye Disease." Once symptoms have formed, they claim it is caused by heat toxicity, administering cooling medicines exclusively, ultimately rendering patients disabled. Having caused disability, instead of blaming their own poor medical skills, they attribute it to fate, remaining unaware until death, which is truly sigh-worthy. Even worse, some pursue faults of predecessors, making excuses and complaining against critics; such people should be slapped on the cheek by a large-footed cooking maid who takes off her shoe.
Poem says: Valley wind blows over the marsh earth, Shu and Cao alone ensure life, Tonifying the stomach obtains Ren and Ling, Huang and Hu take the medicine.

For bleeding caused by excess fire, nourishing yin is prioritized; when water (yin) prevails, fire retreats. For bleeding caused by deficiency fire, tonifying righteous qi is prioritized; when qi is strong, it naturally controls the blood. Currently, men experience epistaxis (nosebleed) and hematemesis (vomiting blood); women experience postpartum metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding). Excessive loss of blood causes pain in the eyeball, weakness in the eyelids, photophobia (aversion to light) preventing looking up, and even soreness in the brow bone and temporal region. If Shibu Wan (Ten-Tonify Pill) and Guipi Tang (Spleen-Restoring Decoction) are ineffective, and due to long-term blood stasis leading to reduced appetite, damaged stomach function, and generation of deficiency wind, it is appropriate to use Danggui, Dihuang, Zaopi, and Ejiao to nourish yin; Renshen, Gancao, Huangqi, and Baizhu to regulate the stomach; Aiye, Fangfeng, and Shaoyao to settle wind. After the medicine acts, if body heat occurs, add cooling agents to cool the blood. If excessive cooling causes body cold, add more tonic agents to warm the blood. Ensure the five zang organs are harmonious. Then, the heart generates blood, and the spleen controls it; the spleen generates blood, and the lung distributes it; the lung generates blood, and the kidney secures it; the kidney generates blood, and the liver stores it. Blood roots in the heart, and its extreme changes lie in the liver. Thereafter, vision returns to normal. For twitching of the muscle wheel (eyelids), this formula is also effective.
Poem says: Shen, Qi, Dang, Di improve blood diseases; for blood disease damage flavors, add Shu and Cao; for blood dryness, Fangfeng, Jiao, and Zao are suitable; for blood wind, Shaoyao and Ai decoction remains excellent.
