Su Bohe Ye (Mentha haplocalyx leaves), fresh He Ye (Nelumbinis Folium, lotus leaf), hair from a young woman's combing (if unavailable, replace with infant lanugo hair), Huajiao Ye (Zanthoxyli Folium, prickly ash leaves), Wuwei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, Schisandra berry); all five are burned to ash while preserving their medicinal properties, each 2 qian; Pengsha (Borax) 3 qian; Fenghuaxiao (Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus, weathered saltpeter) 2 qian; three umbilical cords of infants, roasted until crisp; Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum, borneol) 1.5 qian; Shexiang (Moschus, musk) 0.5 fen (must be high-quality Dangmenzi).
The above formula treats redness and ulceration of both eyelids, excessive discharge, tearing, itching, and pain. If Zhaorong Gao (Beauty Palace Ointment) fails to cure, apply this by closing the eyes and rubbing it on; the effect is indescribably wonderful. Various ashes promote blood circulation, while Pengsha and Xiaoshao clear heat. When blood circulates freely, dampness moves; when heat subsides, tears dry. Bingpian and Shexiang dispel wind, rapidly stopping itching and pain; Umbilical Cord tonifies the form, causing muscles to regenerate quickly. Named "Yuanshuang" (First Frost), perhaps it is akin to the coal from the elixir furnace of earth-walking immortals.
Only Shidan (Chalcanthite) is selected: four liang of bright green crystals are crushed. Use Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, coptis rhizome), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron bark), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria root), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb root), Danshencao (Gentianae Radix, gentian root), Huhuanglian (Picrorhizae Rhizoma, picrorhiza rhizome), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, notopterygium rhizome), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, asarum root), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, ephedra herb), Bo Heye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium, mint leaf), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica, schizonepeta spike), Chuan Huajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, Sichuan pepper), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong rhizome), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, angelica root), Shanqi (Panacis Japonici Radix, Japanese ginseng root), Honghua (Carthami Flos, safflower), Sumu (Pterocarye Ligni, pterocarpus wood), Danpi (Moutan Cortex, tree peony bark), Dayehuangdi (Rehmanniae Radix, rehmannia root), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony root). These twenty raw herbs, each 2 qian, are mixed and pounded into coarse powder. Soak in one large bottle of Huiguijiu (unadulterated rice wine) for two days and nights. Decoct over vigorous fire until half-dry. Filter through thick cloth to remove dregs. Boil again in a small copper pot, add Shidan, stir constantly until extremely thick. Immediately scoop out and dry in the sun.
The above formula specifically treats redness and swelling of both eyes caused by wind-heat obstructing upwards, painful stiffness making it difficult to open, and dense nebulae caused by residual wind pathogens. It is suitable for patients with excess conditions who can tolerate strong medications. Examining its nature, Shidan is extremely sour and astringent; no other herb surpasses it in drying dampness and removing filth. Prepared with medicinal wine that disperses wind, invigorates blood, purges fire, and kills parasites, its substance remains while its nature changes. Used to treat the aforementioned symptoms, it acts like a thunderbolt, breaking everything unyielding and destroying all evil, hence the name.
Select white and solid Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger), take 4 qian of its tender powder. Qupai Liandan (Coptidis Rhizoma, coptis rhizome without skin and spines), finely powdered, 2 qian. Zhen Xiongdan (Ursi Bile, bear bile) 1 qian. Shang Bingpian (High-quality Borneolum Syntheticum, borneol) 0.5 fen.
For sudden eye redness and swelling, photophobia, itching, and astringency, hot tears, and excessive discharge, when pulse is floating and rapid, and standard treatments fail, this formula is indicated. Redness, swelling, and photophobia are attributed to fire erupting from Heart and Spleen; itching, pain, discharge, and tearing are attributed to wind residing in Liver and Gallbladder. However, since the onset is sudden and violent, and the pulse is floating and rapid, this is due to external wind pathogen invasion. Excessive wind generates heat, which rises to the muscle layer, causing these symptoms; it is not a primary disease of the five zang organs. Therefore, standard treatments are ineffective. Moreover, such patients are likely constitutionally deficient, rejecting cooling substances. Combining Jiang (Ginger), Lian (Coptis), Pian (Borneol), and Dan (Bear Bile)—medicines of extreme heat and cold—to control each other follows the principle of "following their desires and subduing with what they fear." Apply 5-6 times daily, or alternatively use Tongtian San (Sky-Piercing Powder) insufflated into the nose, fumigation, and oral administration of Shengfeng Tang (Wind-Vanquishing Decoction). The condition should slightly improve. Once improved, treat according to the specific symptoms; there will be no worsening or change. "Yijianfeng" (One Sword Edge) metaphorically describes its efficacy as sharp as wind: capable of defending against acute attacks but not to be taken lightly.
