A faint glow of evening clouds illuminates the eyes; flying flies and dancing butterflies seem to chase the new clear sky. Why do banners appear to open and roll? Why are endless silk rings extinguished and reborn? The shadow of a bow in a cup of wine has already existed; gazing at the sky, firefly-like chaotic stars flicker and shake.
What causes such demonic phenomena? It is because water recedes (Kidney Yin deficiency) while wind rises and fire ascends (Liver Fire hyperactivity).
This eye condition presents no external symptoms, yet it arises from nothingness. Manifestations include shapes resembling wandering threads, knotted hair, flying flies, dancing butterflies, snake flags, and ribbon rings. Colors may be cyan-black, pinkish-white, or slightly yellow. They appear to flutter chaotically in the air outside the eyeball, vanishing and reappearing instantly. Looking up makes them appear higher; looking down makes them appear lower. This discipline refers to this as Wuyun Yijing (Cloudy Vision Shifting the Pupil). This condition commonly affects men who indulge in alcohol, lust, wealth, and anger, as well as women who have lost excessive blood or suffer from weeping and resentful thoughts. Their emotions linger, and desires know no rest. Compounded by exposure to wind and sun, negligence regarding cold and heat, fatigue of sinews and skin, and extreme labor, the True Yin and Primordial Yang are nearly exhausted, leading to emptiness in the Zang-Fu organs.
Emptiness generates wind, causing pathogenic factors to scatter with the wind and essence to dissipate; deficiency generates fire, causing phlegm to coagulate due to heat and form lesions. Thus, the aforementioned hallucinations occur. Urgently prepare Jiji Wan (Ji Ji Pill), Huanjing Yeguang Wan (Huanjing Night-Luminous Pill), and administer them morning and evening simultaneously. Alternatively, regulate with Quanzhen San (Quanzhen Powder) during the day and decoct Quanzhen Yiqi Tang (Quanzhen One-Qi Decoction) at night. Persisting without interruption over days and months, the perceived objects will gradually diminish and disappear.
If one is stingy with money and expenses, yet continues to indulge in alcohol and flowers, failing to nourish oneself properly, then phlegm, wind, and fire will all converge into the Gallbladder and Kidney regions. Injury to the Gallbladder and Kidneys leads to further depletion of body fluids. Essence cannot ascend and circulate to nourish the source of transformation (the root of life). Consequently, the cavity of clarity (eye aperture) and Yuan Fu (gateways for Qi movement in the eye) cease to function. Even if pure Qi from water and grain is ingested daily, natural function may not be restored. Over time, Shen Shui (clear fluid in the eye) condenses into Yi (opacity/cataract), subtly obstructing the interior of the wheel, termed Neizhang (Internal Cataract).
This is like an icy pool or snowy stream: although clear, without flowing water to irrigate it, it becomes turbid and grows moss; this is inevitable according to circumstances and principle. The assertion in *Longmu Treatise* that "gastric brain fat flows down to form cataracts" is incorrect. Generally, when the disease progresses to internal cataracts, even if skilled in the Eight Methods of Divine Needle therapy, only 14% are curable, while 60-70% are incurable. It is said that medicine can treat false illnesses, but needles cannot revive ruined vision. Visual manifestations resembling fireflies, lamps, or lightning flashing through clouds, progressing to blindness, mostly fall under the category of Qingmang Fengbian (Blindness due to Wind Transformation). Even if a cataract fortunately forms, needling may not yield satisfactory results.
Standing or gazing for long periods causing temporary blurriness, or experiencing dizziness and blurred vision with flickering stars upon rising from bending, picking up objects, or squatting, or even temporary blackouts before recovery, are also caused by the consumption of essence and Qi through emotional and sexual excess. Therefore, slight fatigue leads to the failure of Water and Fire interaction (Heart-Kidney non-interaction), causing Shen Guang (visual spirit/light) to tremble. Although the physical constitution appears robust, this is called gradual decline of Jing Hua (essence and brilliance). Continue taking the aforementioned medicines. If not, Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) or Jiajian Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill) are particularly appropriate.
