Hibiscus flower (Furong Hua); if unavailable, its roots and leaves are also suitable. Curcuma aromatica (Tuyu Jin) -- the tuber formed at the tip of the root of Hemerocallis citrina (Yellow Daylily); Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Sheng Dihuang) must be freshly dug from the earth; dried ones are ineffective. All three ingredients are washed clean and spread out to dry. Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Chuan Beimu) and Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren) have their skins removed; Vigna umbellata Seed (Chixiaodou) retains its skin. These three items are soaked thoroughly in Bamboo Sap (Zhuli). Combined with the aforementioned six ingredients in equal parts, they are pounded into a paste. Apply to the upper and lower eyelids (Rou Lun), leaving a central slit for ventilation. Change three times day and night. If swelling subsides slightly allowing the eye to open, continuing this application for another day is acceptable. In the absence of Bamboo Sap, decoct Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen) strongly, filter the juice, mix with raw honey, and grind; this is also excellent.
When the eyelids (Rou Lun) swell like an inverted cup or a closed clam, with steaming heat that burns the hand, this indicates accumulated heat in the Spleen and Stomach, where hyperactive Yang invades the Liver and Gallbladder. This is referred to as "Wood and Earth clashing," forcing upward towards the orifices, thus causing bilateral eyelid swelling. This is the most dangerous and malignant condition. If not resolved within one or two days, nebulae (Zhang) will arise; by three or four days, the eye will surely be ruined; by five or six days, it is incurable. Urgently use Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shengdi), Hibiscus flower (Furong Hua), and Curcuma aromatica (Tuyu Jin) to clear heat from the muscle layer and exterior. Once the exterior is resolved, the toxin disperses; Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren), Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Beimu), and Vigna umbellata Seed (Chixiaodou) unblock congestion; once unblocked, blood circulation resumes. The use of Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) is primarily to address flaming fire rising upward, assisting in suppressing evil influences. As the disease trend recedes, examine carefully: if the Cornea (Feng Lun) is already damaged, no further discussion is needed; otherwise, external application of Bian stone (acupuncture/scarification) combined with internal purification of the Zang-Fu organs may yield results.
Some argue that for swelling and toxicity, fire methods should be used to vent externally, while topical application seems to force toxins inward, which appears unreasonable. I reply: The eyes differ from carbuncles and sores; swelling prefers to ulcerate and rot. However, in cases of extreme Yang hyperactivity like a closed clam or inverted cup, without topical application to restrain the momentum, the Cornea (Feng Lun) is extremely difficult to preserve. Nevertheless, if the symptoms do not match this pattern, erroneously sealing with herbal medicine and honey will hasten blindness.
Green Salt (Qingyan), Mirabilite (Puxiao), Alum (Danfan), Malachite (Tongqing), Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie Sui), Mint Leaf (Bohe Ye), Asarum Root (Xixin), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Borax (Yueshi). Decoct in water for fumigation and washing. For acute/severe conditions, relief occurs quickly; for mild conditions, gradual recovery ensues.
Medicines for eye drops in the *Ben Jing* each have specific responsibilities. Decoctions for fumigation and washing only need to dispel wind, reduce fire, and remove dampness. Therefore, ancient physicians did not formulate fixed prescriptions. When asked, "Since all things can be medicine, which is best?" the answer is: Those with light texture and pungent-aromatic aroma dispel wind, such as Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Mint Leaf (Bohe), and Asarum Root (Xixin); prolonged wind generates heat, starting with itching then pain, requiring assistance from Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) and Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai). Those with heavy texture and salty-cold flavor purge fire, such as Green Salt (Qingyan), Mirabilite (Puxiao), and Borax (Pengsha/Puzhong); when fire carries fluids upward causing discharge and tearing, Alum (Danfan) and Malachite (Tongqing) are used to astringe. Someone agreed repeatedly, saying, "Let this be the prescription; please record it to benefit future learners." Thus, it is appended to the end of the volume.
The efficacy of these formulas is sometimes miraculous and inexplicable. For example, for carbuncles (Ding Chuang) or syphilis sores (Yangmei Chuang) which can disfigure and cause death, using one handful of maggots, washed clean with running water, ground with vinegar and applied, causes immediate resolution. In winter when maggots are unavailable, grinding grain worms into powder and mixing with vinegar for application also works.
For malignant sores regardless of number or chronicity with ulceration and rotting, even good pills and ointments fail. Use several pieces of Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (Sheng Nanxing) and one sheng of rice vinegar. Cook in a clay pot. Fumigate with the hot steam. Over time, necrotic flesh falls off, redness turns white, large openings shrink, and deep cavities fill up. After two or three treatments, pus dries, scabs form, and healing occurs without medication.
For women suffering from consumption (Lao Zhai) near death, where famous doctors are helpless, dig up the fruit pouch of Rosa laevigata (Jinyingzi), peel it, and combine with a black-bone hen. Drink the broth frequently. Spending on no more than four or five hens allows for gradual recovery.
A type of moss found in wells, mixed with rice, ground until dissolved, and taken with cold spring water, can detoxify arsenic poisoning.
Unfurred mouse pups, collected wild ramie leaves, and forged stones from ancient coffins in equal parts, are pounded together, dried in shade, and used to treat severe trauma involving metal and wood, specifically for uncontrollable bleeding.
The above five formulas originally treated miscellaneous diseases and seem irrelevant to include in an ophthalmology text. However, they were hard to obtain and have saved countless lives. They serve as an aid to practicing medicine (Xuan Hu), so what harm is there in appending them to the end of the volume?
