The appearance of the red nebula is like lantern flowers blooming at night, sharing the same qi as colorful clouds circling the sky. The wind-fire pathology is stubborn, yet the heart remains unanxious; accustomed to flowing tears and discharge, the mind stays calm. When asked face-to-face if vision is clear, it is indistinct.
This condition manifests as a red nebula growing on the cornea (black wheel), varying in thickness and height. The eyes are painful and gritty, unable to open for viewing; upon seeing people, the eyebrows knit tightly, with both tears and discharge flowing. Blood vessels crisscross, and the sclera (white wheel) reflects red and purple hues, hence named "Colorful Clouds Embracing the Sun." It appears initially as an excess of wind and blood heat, but is actually a chronic disease that cannot be cured without gentle, regulatory methods. Why does this disease often occur in depressed women and impoverished people? Poverty brings not only depression but also hunger, cold, and labor. The three treasures—Jing (Essence), Qi (Energy), and Shen (Spirit)—are never free from strain. Though possessing a body, one cannot utilize it effectively. Labor generates fire that flares upward unchecked. During this flare-up, external dampness or internal cold may obstruct the fire, preventing its release. This stagnation persists in the collaterals for years, causing blood to become stasis. Stasis and stagnation accompany each other; stagnation relies on stasis to manifest, resulting in the aforementioned symptoms. Some say: when Yang is dominant and wind is high, the nebula is red and slightly firm; when Yin deficiency causes fire movement, the nebula is white and centrally depressed. This principle applies universally. Treatment method: First, assess the patient's living conditions; second, inquire about the cause; third, diagnose the pulse and physical signs. If not a solid excess pattern, administer large doses of Chonghe Yangzheng Decoction (Harmonizing and Supporting Righteousness Decoction) or Shenxiao Huang Decoction (Miraculous Yellow Decoction) once or twice, observe the response, and adjust with tonification or harmonization. Although efficacy may be slow, do not spare medicine or time; recovery will eventually come. If a youth in favorable circumstances contracts this, it is likely due to mismanagement by incompetent physicians, requiring careful regulation. Otherwise, it may become a recurrent stubborn disease, demanding great effort.
Wasting a lifetime of mental energy, how many days of toil can be endured? Dreams are haunted by wind and madness at midnight, disturbing the true fire of Kan and Li. Now eyes bleed tears, separating one from those before like smoke and vines. With no way to dissipate hidden sorrow, after playing the zither, one sits alone boiling tea.
This condition involves no eye pain, yet fresh blood gushes naturally, resembling a needle prick, unable to stop immediately. Excluding children whose liver qi is constrained by food-stagnation transforming into fire, it mostly affects the elderly or calculating individuals. Their primordial spirit is deficient, suddenly contracting wind-heat. The pathogenic factor moves upward; direct blood fails to return to the Yuan Fu (Eye System) and is forced to leak abnormally. Repeated leakage causes the eyeball to gradually sink and vision to be lost. However, treatment is quite easy, provided one carefully examines the condition and season. Once examined properly, strict adherence to pulse-pattern correspondence is not necessary. Generally, use Dabuyuan Jian (Great Tonification of the Origin Decoction), Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing the Nutritive Decoction), Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction), or Ziyin Dihuang Wan (Nourish Yin Rehmannia Pill) for immediate effect.
A mediocre scholar, skilled in litigation writing, promised case outcomes based on the amount of money offered, keeping his door as busy as a market for over twenty years. One evening crossing Dong Bridge, a river wind blew against his face. His left eye began weeping profusely; wiping it revealed blood filling the hand. Upon returning home to wash and look in the mirror, he was blind in that eye. Some attributed it to an internal organ toxin. Alas! "Zang" (Organ) and "Zhang" (Nebula/Obstruction) share the same pronunciation but different characters. While this is a humorous play on words, it may well reflect the root cause of the disease. Recorded here for those who drill into latrines (metaphor for petty gain) to take heed.
