(Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction),晚上服用八味地黄丸(Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill)交替投药十几天,也痊愈了。
Jingbao Jingying (Crystal Clear Mirror) is known for its ability to illuminate demons, but now hanging in the air, who can still gently breathe upon it? I wish that from now on it would be carefully preserved, sparing one the effort of cleaning and polishing due to dimness and blurriness.
This condition presents with redness and pain in the eyes, yet discharge (Chi, 眵) and tears are scanty or absent. However, the Qingjing (Black Pupil/Cornea-Iris area) appears shrouded in turbid smoke, with a dull and lifeless luster. In severe cases, it resembles looking through a fogged mirror, unable to reflect the face. Viewed from the side, only a faint glimpse of the Jinjing (Golden Well/Pupil) can be seen. Although the patient may see nearby objects when looking directly, it is no different from viewing through silk gauze. The root cause of this disease lies in the misuse of cold-natured herbs for heat syndromes, which cross-injures the Lipmo (Fat Membrane), compounded by stinginess in medication, prolonged mental fatigue, and lack of rest and recuperation. Clearly, this is an External Obstruction (Wai Zhang, 外障) eye disease, but since the Fenglun (Wind Wheel/Cornea) surface is smooth without any removable opacity, it is termed "Qi Yi" (Gas Opacity). It is extremely difficult to treat. If such symptoms occur after the resolution of an acute opacity due to sudden illness, it indicates that Yuanqi (Original Qi) has not yet recovered, and thus does not fall under this discussion. Medication should be adjusted according to medical records; ten cases can be reliably cured.
The second son of my cousin's brother, Yu Zhaowen, aged sixteen, suffered from wind-heat causing redness and swelling during the late summer. After the physician treated him, his eyes developed Qi Yi, resembling dead eyes that were frightening to look at. His uncle went personally to Nanfang to seek treatment. As a close relative of my grandmother, I accompanied him despite the scorching heat. Upon examination, the symptoms were indeed strange, and the pulse was chaotic. Asking about his preferences and comfort, he stated that his abdomen was full, he had no appetite, felt thirsty and needed to drink, and urinated frequently. Asked about his vision, he said, "Day looks like night." From this, I realized that excessive medication had removed the pathogen but severely damaged the Zangfu (Zang and Fu Organs) Qi. Therefore, I prescribed Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite and Magnolia Root Decoction) added with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). In the evening, he took the Zuoyou He Gui Formula. The next day, the lower edge of the Fenglun appeared clear and bright like a new moon, surpassing normal clarity. Continuing with this approach, his vision improved gradually, opening up line by line daily. Exactly fifteen days later, it became completely clear. Later, another person suddenly developed Qi Zhang (Gas Obstruction). By administering Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) during the day and Bawei Dihuang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) at night alternately for over ten days, he also recovered.
Ophthalmology texts do not record this condition, nor do they necessarily use these medicines. Students who can apply this knowledge analogously may hopefully receive my true transmission.
Yinhai Shuanghan (Silver Sea Double Containment/Eyes) shine like pearls illuminating the night. Losing sight so casually causes surprise and doubt. This is not caused by spirits or demons, but rather by hidden Qi movement and temporary separation of Blood. Many patients suffer, few recover. Those who are melancholic and prone to illness need not seek medical help; it is like the waking from the Handan Dream or the cooking of the Yellow Millet—natural processes. Even Chunyang (Pure Yang/Zhang Boduan) would frown at this.
This condition refers to individuals who otherwise have no other diseases, where the external contours are undamaged and the internal Tongs hen (Pupil/Spirit) is intact, yet they suddenly become blind. There are three causes: Yin Gu (Yin Solitude), Yang Gua (Yang Scarcity), and Shen Li (Spirit Separation). Injury to Yang often stems from the Six Desires; injury to Yin often stems from the Seven Emotions; injury to Shen involves both emotions and desires. Some young people whose knowledge is undeveloped, or old people whose worldly affairs are finished, suddenly develop this condition, which does not fall into the above three categories but belongs to Guan Ge (Guan and Ge Syndromes). What is Guan Ge? It refers to disharmony of Yang pulses, where Qi remains in the Fu organs, causing excessive Yang Qi, preventing Yin Qi from nourishing the upper part, hence called "Guan". All exterior contractions involve Qi movement, where pathogens enter via Qi, causing obstruction of the upper orifices, all belonging to Guan. Disharmony of Yin pulses means Blood remains in the Zang organs, causing excessive Yin Qi, preventing Yang Qi from protecting the lower part, hence called "Ge". All miscellaneous diseases arising from Blood issues, where pathogens exit via Blood, causing obstruction of the lower orifices, belong to Ge. When both Yin and Yang are excessive, with no Yang in Yin and no Yin in Yang, and Yin and Yang separate, Yingwei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) becomes blocked, and Xueqi (Blood and Qi) fail to circulate mutually. This is simultaneous pathogenic invasion of Zang and Fu organs, hence called Guan Ge. In summary, only those with Toufeng (Head Wind), Tanhuo (Phlegm-Fire), deficient Yuanqi, or insufficient fluids will suffer this. With proper maintenance and timely herbal treatment, it will heal spontaneously in a few days; otherwise, it becomes a chronic stubborn disease. This condition occurs rapidly and strangely. People suspect ghosts and gods, consulting shamans first and doctors later. They do not know that urgent treatment can restore sight, but delay leads to fixed pathology where medicine is useless. What can ghosts do? What can monks and Daoists do?
When this condition strikes suddenly, regardless of whether it is Yin, Yang, Shen, or Guan Ge, immediately decoct Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction), take a few qian, and drink frequently while hot. Then adjust other medications, using only tonification and no purgation, and one might preserve safety. Someone asked the rationale. I replied: Blood is the guardian of Qi, and Qi is the protector of Blood; they accompany each other and do not separate. Thus, Shen rests in its residence, and the eyes are bright. Now, sudden blindness occurs because Qi was first struck by the pathogen. Once Qi is affected, it transmits to Blood, meaning "when Qi is diseased, Blood is also diseased." If there is further loss, Qi becomes solitary Yang, like fierce fire, and Blood becomes solitary Yin, akin to cold water. At this moment, tangible Blood cannot be generated quickly, so the subtle Qi must be urgently protected. Hence, sweet-warm Renshen (Ginseng) is used to consolidate Yuanqi, weighing the urgency. The Classics state: "For blood loss, benefit the Qi; as Yang grows, Yin lengthens." This is what is meant. May I ask the secondary method? It is Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) plus Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder). For the poor with no resources, this suffices to meet obligations. But for the precise shot hitting the target, who can match the subtle efficacy of Ginseng?
Among creatures of Blood and Qi, none are more stupid and clumsy than pigs. Monks and Daoists can make humans sacrifice their bodies and wealth, but cannot make pigs kneel and accept precepts. Can pigs repel heterodoxy? Those who revere heterodoxy are even more stupid than pigs. Believing in shamans over doctors, and delaying treatment for critical conditions like sudden blindness by drawing talismans before taking medicine, leads to death. How can everyone write these words at home to clarify instructions and forever prevent this disaster? The merit exceeds millions of times that of bowing to Buddhas and chanting scriptures.
