One tael of Xiao Ming Fan (Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus, 风化硝), five qian of Hong Fen (Red Powder, 红粉), and eight fen of Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum, 冰片). In early autumn, select large bitter melons, hollow out the pulp and seeds, fill them with Yuan Ming Fen (Mirabilite, 元明粉), and hang them in a place exposed to the northwest wind. By winter, frost will naturally precipitate; this is Xiao Ming Fan. To prepare Hong Fen: select water chestnuts, peel off the coarse skin, wash them clean, pound them until extremely fine, filter through new cotton cloth to remove dregs, clarify the powder and dry it in the sun, soak it in the natural juice of Carthamus tinctorius flowers (Zhi Zi Hua, 胭脂花), and dry again, avoiding fire. Alternatively, one may use powder from Adzuki beans (Chi Xiao Dou, 赤小豆) or Ginkgo nuts (Bai Guo, 白果), soaked in Jin Hua Yan Dan water (Golden Flower Carmine Water, 金花胭丹水), which is also excellent.
The above formula is used for preventing disease, treating blurred vision with slight redness after illness, and intermittent itching and pain. Since Zhi Zi Hua has the property of promoting blood circulation, when assisted by Hong Fen and Bing Pian, it extracts toxins and removes filth. The reason for doubling the amount of Xiao Ming Fan is that its salty, cold, and slightly bitter nature treats the aforementioned symptoms, akin to how the world becomes clear and serene after frost and dew fall. Hence, the formula is named based on its virtue and color.
Select large Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, 朱砂) as bright as a mirror. Bai Fan (Alumen, 白矾) should be washed by floating in water. Lu Gan Shi (Calamina, 炉甘石) should be selected for being white, clean, light, and floating on water. Crush it, place it in a jar, and process it by "shu fei" (calcination with liquid medium). Then, decoct Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 黄连) one qian in strong liquid, filter clearly, soak the stones, and dry them. Use five qian each. Select Yue Shi (Talcum, 月石) that is bright and clean like pomegranate seeds. Select Qing Fen (Calomel, 轻粉) in large, bright pieces. Use three qian each. These ingredients must be prepared separately and added only at the time of use; otherwise, the fresh red color will suddenly turn black. Use two qian each of Yuan Ming Fen, Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, 牛黄), and Ming Xiong Huang (Realgar, 明雄黄). Zhen Zhu (Margarita, 珍珠), Shi Xie (Shrimp Shell Stone, 石蟹), or purple Shi Yan (Swallow Stone, 石燕) may also be used; all must be processed by "fei". Xue Jie (Dragon's Blood, 血竭) should be high-quality Qilin Jie, transparent red allowing light to pass through, ground extremely fine like dust without white spots before use. Use one qian each of Ren Ru Fen (Human Milk Powder, 人乳粉), Yin Bo (Folium Aurii et Argenti, 银箔), Xiong Dan (Ursi Bile, 熊胆), She Xiang (Moschus, 麝香), Ru Xiang (Olibanum, 乳香), and Mo Yao (Myrrha, 没药). Bing Pian must be bright and non-flammable, using one qian five fen. Use two hundred sheets of Jin Bo (Folium Aurii, 金箔). Grinding Yin Jin Bo (Silver and Gold Foil, 金银箔) together with Ren Ru Fen makes them easier to crush.
The above formula is a general preparation for eye drops. Analyzing its principles: Lu Gan Shi processed with Huang Lian is cool and neutral, astringing dampness; assisted by Zhen Zhu, Qing Fen, Shi Xie, and Xiong Huang, it cleanses spiritually and removes greasy dirt. Zhu Sha processed with Bai Fan is sour and suppresses evil pathogens; assisted by Niu Huang, Yue Shi, Yuan Ming Fen, and Xiong Dan, it is bitter and cold, draining fire and heat. Yin Jin repels malignancy, Ren Ru moistens dryness, along with Ru Xiang, Mo Yao, and Xue Jie which promote blood circulation, and Bing Pian (Borneolum, 片脑) and She Qi (Moschus, 麝脐) which dissipate qi. Thus, various diseases are eliminated. It is called "Fu Rong Jing" (Hibiscus Mirror, 芙蓉镜), likely named for both its texture and color. If Zhen Zhu is unavailable, finely ground and processed Hai Luo Ke (Concha Meretricis, 海螺壳) or Shi Jue Ming (Concha Haliotidis, 石决明) may serve as substitutes.
