For headaches caused by pathogens in various meridians that do not subside after using dispersing medications, take equal parts of fresh scallion white part (Congbai), dried mugwort leaf (Aiye), and raw processed aconite root (Xifuzi). Pound them together into a paste, form into thin cakes, wrap in cloth, place on the patient's head, and slowly moxibustion-iron them over a mild fire. Replace with fresh cakes when they burn, continuing until the pain ceases. This is because scallion and mugwort can unblock qi circulation, while aconite warms yang qi; combined with ironing, the pathogenic factors dissipate with the qi. This also exemplifies the treatment principle of "treating heat with heat" (Re Yin Re Yong). Acupuncture, bloodletting with bian stones, and moxibustion are still methods to vent heat; although their effects are rapid, they are used out of necessity and are not as stable and convenient as this method, which patients are willing to undergo. Ironing the painful area with bags of fried rice or fried salt is also effective.
Euphorbia humifusa herb (Erqian, 2 qian), Daphne odora flower, Angelica dahurica root (Baizhi), Indigo naturalis (Qingdai), Realgar (Yihuang, 1 qian), Asarum root (Xixin), Angelica sinensis root (Danggui), Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome (Xiong), Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root (Fuzi) (each 7 fen), Musk (Shexiang, 5 fen). All herbs should be used raw, ground into an extremely fine powder, and stored in a tin jar. Blow the powder into the nose. For sudden redness and swelling of the eyes, caused by qi and blood stagnation and obstruction in the Liver and Spleen, the method is to induce sneezing or tearing via nasal insufflation, allowing the pathogen to exit with mucus and tears, so that pain subsides slightly before daring to open the eyes for vision. Therefore, Euphorbia humifusa, Daphne odora, Indigo naturalis, and Realgar are used to resolve wind-toxicity, while Ligusticum chuanxiong, Angelica sinensis, Angelica dahurica, and Aconitum carmichaelii are used to promote qi and blood circulation. Musk and Asarum, being aromatic and drying substances, are intended to rapidly open the stagnation. The Classics state: "For acute conditions, use reduction." This is essentially a variation of sweating and emesis therapies. However, although the number of herbs is small, their nature is potent; insufflation should be slow rather than rapid, and it is contraindicated for those with weak constitutions or chronic illnesses. Why is the formula named Tongtian (Penetrating Heaven)? Because Heavenly Qi connects to the Lung, and the Lung orifice opens at the nose.
When true yuan (original qi) is exhausted and depleted, with qi laxity and essence slipping, leakage worsening daily until exhaustion is complete, Huigu Formula is as follows:
Astragalus membranaceus root (Huangqi), Saposhnikovia divaricata root (Fangfeng) (each 2 qian), Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu) (4 qian).
To withstand wind and rain, even riding in carriages or on horses cannot avoid cold-dampness. Contracting pathogens externally naturally damages the形体 (physical body), leading withered skin and uncontrollable spontaneous sweating. It is appropriate to vigorously tonify Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) to restore the physical form. Astragalus is sweet and warm, a sacred medicine for deficiency of the exterior. Saposhnikovia is slightly bitter and acrid, capable of resisting wind, hence used in equal dosage. Baizhu is doubled to strengthen the Spleen, preventing the condition of "deficiency unable to accept tonification," thereby achieving the renowned efficacy of Yupingfeng San (Jade Windscreen Powder).
The poem states: "Baizhu can endure summer, Huangqi fears winter; shielding from cold without flesh formations, relying on medicinal Fangfeng."
