The critical juncture between life and death lies in the integrity of Zhenyuan (the fundamental vital Qi of the body). If it is deficient and fails to be full, how can the body function? The Hui Bu Fang (Collection and Supplement Formula) is as follows:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [lightly rinsed to remove oil, dried, and stir-fried with honey], Fuling (Poria) [soaked in human milk and steamed], Gancao (Licorice Root) [honey-pared, or sliced and stir-fried with honey].
This formula is indicated for symptoms such as a withered and emaciated appearance of the eyes, low and faint voice and breathing, weakness in opening the eyes and viewing objects, and a soggy and small pulse.
All movements are governed by Qi, while Blood serves as its companion. When Qi is regulated, there is life; when Qi stagnates, there is disease; when Qi is chaotic, there is danger; when Qi ceases, there is death. For those presenting the aforementioned eye symptoms, it is merely Qi deficiency. Deficiency is not difficult to identify: a withered eye color is known through observation; a low and faint voice is known through listening; weakness in opening the eyes and a soggy, small pulse are known through inquiry and palpation. In such cases, it is urgent to tonify Qi. In the above formula, Renshen is clear and moistening, capable of tonifying the Yuan Qi of the five Zang organs. Baizhu is acrid and warm, capable of tonifying the "Mother Qi" of the five Zang organs (referring to Spleen/Stomach Qi, as the Spleen is the source of postnatal Qi and Blood). Fuling is pale and pure, capable of leaching out turbid Qi stagnant in the middle Jiao. Gancao is sweet and neutral, capable of harmonizing rebellious pathogenic Qi. Although these four herbs are common, their regulation is moderate and balanced, resembling the upright Junzi (gentleman) who does not deviate from the mean; hence they are called the "Four Gentlemen."
Poem: Since ancient times, Guolao (a nickname for Licorice) has kept peace and tranquility; Baizhu, Renshen, and Fuling prepare for nourishing life. Scanning the medicine cabinet, no other items compare; their harmonization indeed approaches human sentiment.
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) [steamed and sun-dried with pure wine until thoroughly cooked], Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba/Rubra) [stir-fried with wine], Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) [steamed with wine].
When Blood is abundant and nourishing, Qi naturally shines; when Blood flows smoothly, diseases do not arise. If this order is disrupted, the Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) circulating within may reverse and exit outward. What was previously described as insufficiency now becomes corrupted and dry; dryness leads to the stirring of Wind. Consequently, redness of the eyes persists, accompanied by itching and tearing. The primary treatment involves using the rich-flavored ingredients of Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish the Liver. When Liver Qi is harmonized, Blood naturally returns to its vessels. Speaking separately, Danggui is acrid, fragrant, and slightly bitter, capable of activating blood stasis. Dihuang is sweet, bitter, and slightly cold, capable of nourishing blood dryness. Cold in the blood causes coagulation, whereas Xiong promotes circulation; heat in the blood causes reckless movement, whereas Shaoyao promotes astringency. Used according to the syndrome, they are indeed the golden elixir for regulating the primal state. However, if there is excessive bleeding from above or below, and breath is nearly imperceptible, this cup should not be administered recklessly.
Poem: Xiong seedlings grow green among beans, Shaoyao flowers bloom elegantly like lotuses; This person returns to Huaiqing land, gifted to her fragrant minister before the beauty.
